Are addons truly needed surely the raids are designed to be doable with just the tools available in the game. Are there any guilds about that raid without using them. Maybe for future raids the achievement to aim for would be world first without addons. As you can probably tell I'm not a raider and if i'm being stupid for asking this just say, but just wanting to throw an idea out there to think about!

There are guilds that "raid blind" without encounter addons or even reading up on reports from the PTR. They go into each encounter without having a clue what each boss does, what abilities need to be interrupted, and what will happen as the boss phases. I've never done it, but I get the idea that it's a special breed. I fear that many of the folks that will join the raid finder will do this, but quite unintentionally. The Dungeon Journal will be of some assistance, but only for those folks who have the wherewithall to actually read it. It's possible to raid without addons, but for a new player, they can be extremely helpful.

They are certainly not required. You can raid without add ons or gems or enchants. Or the ever-popular raiding while not sober. Not having add ons is just another way of deliberately playing sub optimally. Some people like the additional challenge. Others have a very limited computer. Some are technology Luddites.

as Badgelooter said- it's possible to raid without add-ons, but it's a little extra bit of insurance. DBM will tell you when to tank-swap for a debuff, when to interrupt a bosses spell cast, and when you are standing in something that will kill you. Again, you can raid without add-ons, but it does make raiding that much easier, and often puts less stress on healers and tanks.

I really wouldn't want to raid with someone who didn't have a boss alert going, the ability to heal without targeting, the ability to remove debuffs without targeting, and something to monitor threat.- if you can put all that together on your own with the few macro slots the game gives you fine. Otherwise get an addon or two so you don't drag the others down with you.
