It looks like publication delays and deadlines were not the worst of the
World of Warcraft Official Magazine's troubles. Issue 5 of the oft-late magazine will be its last, and subscribers have been sent emails with redemption codes for a refund or a package of the six pets from the Blizzard pet store. You are apparently only allowed to get a reimbursement if you request it in writing by Sept. 30, so check your email soon if you are a
World of Warcraft Official Magazine subscriber.
The
World of Warcraft Official Magazine was a pretty cool resource when it came out, but with
print media for a game that changes so often and critically as
World of Warcraft, the magazine just could not keep up. It is a shame, however, to see anything of this caliber end. I think I speak for a lot of readers and
WoW fans when I say that the magazine had a lot of potential.
Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with patch 4.3. Look at what's ahead: new item storage options, cross-realm raiding, cosmetic armor skinning and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing -- from astride his back!

The magazine did have a lot of potential, and its article were genuinely fun and interesting to read. Unfortunately, much of the content it covered was already available on several other online sources weeks before the magazines would come out.

Heres hoping there would be more new features on battle.net site or similiars to replace lost articles..would love to see more lore articles on battle.net that are official and so forth =/
Theres so much potential battlenet site could have. Because frankly, so far most of the features are same "comic roundup" or very rare GC blog or art-gallery updates...what about lore articles? Something fun from blizzard so devs dont feel so distant? Wowinsider articles are ok but I wish there was more revelations or so for example lore or general tactics for battlegrounds on the site.

This is what they get for making it a subscription only magazine and charging almost double what the book would be actually worth on a normal newsstand or bookstore.
paragorillabear Sep 17th 2011 9:54AM
Actually, considering the page count and the complete absence of ads, I'd say they were charging HALF what a newsstand price would be.
My only complaint now is that, though my sub started with #3, they sent me the woefully outdated #2 as an afterthought, so now there will be no bonus pet pack for me. :(

It's sad to see WoW Magazine go. I really enjoyed it and was the only Magazine I wanted to read everything in. =(
Faar Sep 17th 2011 6:13AM
Really? You found the magazine that interesting? I haven't even opened issues three and four, I was so put off by the first two issues in that they just recycled info that was already known. Hearing that you have to request refunding by writing (snailmail???), I'm glad I never refreshed my subscription for year two. What a rip-off.

why dont they opt for a digital magazine? since the WoW magazine is the official WoW magazine and possibly backed by Blizzard, they could just have first dibs on news stories, tiers, and such. not everyone that plays WoW also digs for the latest news, and not everyone visits the battle.net WoW page or is a fan on facebook...

Whatever about a physical magazine you can get delivered, I doubt the business model exists for a paid subscription website that covers material much of which would eventually get coverage on other sites.
Kakume Sep 16th 2011 5:59PM
That said... I'd have been all over an iPad version.

Gamepro Magazine and GameInformer are two magazines that i am aware of that offer both digitial and physcial magazines. it is possible for WoW to continue as digital, but i highly doubt at its current subscription price.
llcjay2003 Sep 16th 2011 7:56PM
Except Gamepro just went quarterly, news stand only.
spam Sep 16th 2011 5:43PM
Well Blizzard took a while to get this out just like content in their game and cata patches. Is anyone really surprised by this?
Snuzzle Sep 16th 2011 10:08PM
Fans: "Blizz! We want more content sooner!"
Blizz: "Okay, here, here's Firelands with 4.1."
Fans: "Wah! Too soon! We've barely gotten through T11!"
Blizz: "..."
Gendou Sep 16th 2011 5:46PM
As one of their early subscribers, I was saddened by the news. People complained about the price and the slow content, but considering it was a thick, glossy magazine without advertising, I thought the price was more than fair and that the exclusive content (particularly the interviews with Blizzard staff) made up for the lack of timely content.
WOW Magazine, you will be missed.

It was a good magazine, but they were always so late getting each issue out. I let my sub lapse after the first 4 issues because of the late delivery...
Lucidique Sep 16th 2011 5:50PM
A magazine just doesn't fit an ever-changing MMO. Great attempt, but I gotta admit I saw it coming early on.

"but with print media for a game that changes so often and critically as World of Warcraft, the magazine just could not keep up."
Say what? Eve Online has a print media magazine that has, so far, made it to issue 24. It's published quarterly, and they manage to stay ahead. True Eve only has 2 major content expansions/patches per year, but even so...
vertigobliss86 Sep 16th 2011 5:53PM
Saw that coming, that's why I never subscribed.
Morimoto Sep 16th 2011 6:01PM
I just entered my code and checked out the "premium" they offered in lieu of a refund - it is six in-game noncombat pets from the store: Lil' K.T., Cenarion Hatchling, Lil' XT, Moonkin Hatchling, Pandaren Monk, and Lil' Ragnaros.
Morimoto Sep 16th 2011 6:02PM
Doh! I meant to add that since I don't have any of them I don't mind taking their offer.
