Totem Talk: Soloing old raids as a DPS shaman
Every week, WoW Insider brings you Totem Talk for elemental, enhancement, and restoration shaman. Josh Myers once only tackled the hard questions about enhancement but has recently expanded his sphere of responsibility to all shaman DPS specs. (And no, two-handed enhancement is still never coming back.)
With the introduction of transmogrification in patch 4.3, collecting old armor styles has become one of the most productive ways to spend your free time in World of Warcraft. As an added bonus, soloing old content (or going in very small groups) can be very lucrative. I made 2,400 gold tonight from soloing Karazhan, Gruul's Lair, and Magtheridon's Lair and grouping for Sunwell Plateau, Tempest Keep, Serpentshrine Cavern, and Caverns of Time: Mount Hyjal.
Both specs of DPS shaman bring some excellent soloing utility to the table. As mail wearers, we have some solid physical damage mitigation. Wind Shear is an incredible utility ability that will be used on bosses in nearly every tier of raiding. Earth and Fire Elemental Totems provide a second target and work especially well for pulling council fights, so that you can pick off one target and kill it while the rest attack your elemental. Tremor Totem is useful on fights like Lady Vashj. Grounding Totem can be used to absorb direct damage spells your interrupt is down for or catch boss CCs that are headed your way. Bloodlust is great for burst DPS, and especially helpful on fights that have a soft enrage. And, of course, being a hybrid class means that both of our DPS specs have some amount of self healing to bring to the table.
Enhancement tactics
The easiest way to solo older content is by speccing enhancement, provided you have some solid level 85 agility gear to support the spec. Enhancement brings a lot of benefits to the table. It has some great healing in Maelstrom Weapon five Greater Healing Waves, which can be backed up by the passive healing of your Feral Spirits when they're up. Shamanistic Rage is your own private Shield Wall for when the going gets tough. Dual Wield gives us the ability to parry, which is a small bonus when fighting melee-heavy mobs.
Enhancement has its downsides. The low mana pool means that tight spots can be a struggle to escape from. Three non-Maelstrom Greater Healing Waves will annihilate your mana pool. Moreover, you lack the ability to attack from a distance. On single-target bosses like Gruul, this is immaterial. However, on bosses like Nightbane (who has an incredibly long air phase at every 25% of his health) or council fights like High King Maulgar (where you need to outrange Death Coils and Polymorphs), the disadvantages of being a melee character are clear.
If you do want to go enhancement, there are a few changes you'll want to make for your soloing spec. The top DPS enhancement spec puts two points into Improved Shields for some added Lightning Shield damage. That's not really needed for soloing; grab those points and an extra one from elemental to max out Toughness. I also suggest grabbing Spark of Life to increase your self-healing. You also want to grab Focused Insight; since shocks are a pivotal part of your priority, the Focused Insight proc will almost always be up, making all of your instant Greater Healing Waves hit that much harder. Your last talent point is a floater. Acuity will help damage and healing, while Nature's Guardian can rescue you from a sticky situation. I go with this spec for enhancement soloing.
Your glyph choices for soloing will look a lot like your glyphs for raiding. If you're feeling like you need some more healing, you can switch out Glyph of Windfury Weapon for Glyph of Feral Spirit. Lightning Shield is pretty much a requirement; since you'll be tanking most of the big bads, this glyph will save you a global cooldown every 10 to 15 seconds. Stoneclaw Totem is also a requirement, giving you an extra 16,000 hit points that you don't need to heal every 20 seconds. My last suggestion would be Healing Spring Totem. You'll be keeping Healing Stream down for the minor heal over time it does anyway, and you'll want magic resistance for most of the fights in Burning Crusade content.
Elemental tactics
That said, there are benefits to going elemental over enhancement. When specced properly for soloing, elemental has tons more passive damage mitigation than enhancement. First, elemental has the benefit of using a shield, which provides around 15% more physical damage mitigation than enhancement. Add Elemental Warding on top of that, and an elemental shaman passively takes 15% less physical damage and 10% less magic damage than enhancement. Add in Ancestral Resolve, and your elemental shaman becomes even more tankish, taking 10% less damage 90% of the time. Elemental also has more solid burst damage than enhancement, due to Elemental Mastery.
Just like enhancement, elemental has its own downsides. The most obvious one is spell pushback, since you'll be taking melee swings quite often. This can be somewhat helped by Totem of Tranquil Mind, but using that will cause you to lose out on Healing Spring Totem and your resistance aura, which is painful. Ele can cast more heals than enhancement can but doesn't have the passive mana regeneration enhancement has in Primal Wisdom. It also lacks any sort of damage reduction cooldown unless you glyph Elemental Mastery, which makes escaping from tough situations harder.
Talenting for soloing as elemental is a lot different than enhancement. First, you're dropping Rolling Thunder and Fulmination entirely. With mobs constantly attacking you, building up 9 stacks of Lightning Shield is significantly more difficult, and on some fights it will be impossible. Instead, switch those points into Elemental Warding. With your one leftover point, you have three choices. Convection will save you mana, a precious commodity since you'll be casting mana-intensive heals frequently. Earth's Grasp can help you gain distance on fights with adds, but those are few and far between. Reverberation is helpful for interrupting, which is especially useful on fights like High King Maulgar. I also drop Earthquake to max out whichever of the above three talents I chose.
Also, you'll want to subspec restoration rather than enhancement. Ancestral Resolve and Spark of Life are too incredibly powerful to pass up. You have the choice of going for Focused Insight or not, but with no Fulmination you'll only be shocking every 27 seconds or so. You can also try putting points into Elemental Weapons in enhancement for some added DPS. I personally put the rest of my points into Tidal Focus and Nature's Guardian, giving me more survivability.
Glyph of Unleashed Lightning will be your best friend soloing. Get used to strafing away from bosses while casting, as strafing will allow you to cover more distance. You still want to go with Glyph of Flame Shock and Glyph of Lightning Bolt (though going Glyph of Lava Burst would not be a huge difference). For majors, Healing Spring Totem and Stoneclaw Totem are both vital. Drop Glyph of Lightning Shield. You're no longer using Rolling Thunder or Fulmination, so there's no point in even using Lightning Shield while DPSing. Instead, go for Water Shield, as that will give you more mana for healing. Your last spot has two main choices: Glyph of Thunder is more mana per minute, and Thunderstorm does some nice damage itself. Glyph of Elemental Mastery gives you a defensive cooldown (which elemental sorely lacks), but it is tied to your offensive cooldown.
No matter which spec you choose, soloing at least the first tier of Burning Crusade content is within your reach. I've not had the chance to test either spec in later BC content myself, but I'd love to hear from other players if they have.
Show your totemic mastery by reading Totem Talk: Enhancement every week. We've got enhancement-specific advice on the latest gear and tier gear set bonuses, and we'll help you dig in and learn to level the enhancement way.

For solo vs Void Reaver: be sure to fight void reaver on a ramp with him higher than you on ramp. This increases the knockback he does to you thus giving you time for a quick heal/defensive CD. Use Earthliving imbue on main hand/flame on off hand, elixir of resistance and glyphed healing stream + glyphed stoneclaw and bammo tier 5 shoulders are yours!

The Earthquake link points to Reverberation
I loved the article a lot! I am really excited that many of the writers are writing posts about this topic. I am really excited to try this all out on my characters...once Christmas break rolls around haha

Anyone tried out hyjal? The add fights and trash waves have got me worried and haven't even attempted them yet.
Josh Myers Sep 18th 2011 1:18AM
I have not tried Hyjal yet, but it seemed really easy when we three manned it the other day!
If you have the gear for both enh/ele, I'd suggest running with both for Hyjal. Gargoyle trash packs are incredibly annoying as enhancement alone, whereas the large groups of mobs cause terrible spell pushback for ele.
Fletcher Sep 17th 2011 9:43PM
Damn, I'm going to have to start soloing these things myself ... always wanted tier four on various classes.
Firestyle Sep 17th 2011 11:09PM
And if you wanna get the first boss in AQ 40 down, at least in wotlk, the best way to solo was a long, long, slow grind as resto, without any totems.
vendeurfrancais Sep 17th 2011 11:30PM
yeah, but you can just burst him down now.

Personally: Don't solo. Soloing is for people trying to prove something. Find a friend who's not a hunter or another shaman (and preferably, uses something you won't, like Staffs, Polearms, or Shields if you're enhancement) and duo them. practically all content prior to Wrath is Duoable if the pair works well together. Personally, I damn the consequences and just get small guild groups and rely on our good relationship for everyone to get what they want.
Fletcher Sep 18th 2011 12:39AM
That's ideal if one has a guild or friends on the server. If one doesn't, you're stuck with the free trial account trick and soloing to get in there.
Josh Myers Sep 18th 2011 1:20AM
I solo as much for money as for anything. I find it a much more enjoyable way to make money than playing the auction house or plying my professions in trade. Bringing in more people considerably lowers my cash flow!
Cerebrium Sep 18th 2011 6:02AM
Why not? Some people like the challenge of trying to take down something on their own.
Chromebus Sep 18th 2011 11:26AM
"Soloing is for people trying to prove something" This sentence alone is probably why you've been so downrated. Especially since you don't support it at all. Point me to some area of this game where you aren't trying to prove yourself. Raiding? Questing? PVP? Achivements? Leveling? Gold Making? Soloing old raids is fun it's a slight break from the mundane routine of normal 85 play. Especially if you're doing the BC raids. You'll actually realize you're putting some effort and a bit of creativity in.

Does anyone know what font he is using in those screen shots?
Also what addon is being used to alter the fonts in game like that?
Josh Myers Sep 18th 2011 2:16AM
I believe it is called "Accidental Presidency!"
CTLADA Sep 18th 2011 2:03AM
Ya, i've been wondering about that font for a while too =(
Bravetank Sep 18th 2011 2:09AM
You've got me totally excited to try this today. Not quite soloing because my elemental shaman is only 73 but my husband has an 85 Prot warrior & we're going to do it together. Don't know why I haven't thought of it before. I really want to see that content and get old armor sets (actually any armor set- never done raids!).

Chromebus Sep 18th 2011 11:34AM
If you've never done raids before then I think you'll really enjoy going back to some of the older content :) Even though a number of them are pretty easy (I'm talking about you Molten Core!) you'll still find yourself with things to do, and the BC raids will present enough of a fun challenge to keep you interested.
Having your husband to partner with will definitely help. In my observation The Eye and Serpenttshrine Cavern are about the limits for most people to solo if you want to clear an entire raid yourself (except for the really skilled/lucky). With two of you those two raids should be quite doable, and even a few BC bosses.
Plus you get to see some of the cooler fights without the pain of overweight, unshaven jerks raging at you with their keyboards.
Matthew Sep 18th 2011 4:47AM
What do you think about being elemental with the 4 piece pvp bonus that allows you to gain charges of Lightning Shield instead of lose them? Would you then keep the fulmination / rolling thunder combo?
Matthew Sep 18th 2011 4:50AM
I routiney did Heroic Magisters Terrace for the Chicken. On Enhance it was WAY faster (!!) than on elemental. Shockingly so (hehe).
I got my chicken finally.
komradejack Sep 18th 2011 8:49AM
Don't forget about damage reduction by using offhand Rockbiter for Enhancement.
