Breakfast Topic: Who is your in-game nemesis?
This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider's pages.
During a break from WoW this summer, I took some time to try out some of the other MMOs out there. One of the ones I really enjoyed was Champions Online: Free for All, a free-to-play MMO on the Steam network. Aside from the incredible character customization (it took me hours to fine-tune my superhero outfit!), one of the things I most enjoyed about it was the concept of the Nemesis. At some point during the leveling-up experience, you get a chance to design and create your character's own supervillain ... who then randomly pops up from time to time to make your day more difficult!
Now that I'm back to World of Warcraft, I keep thinking about that concept. Who would be my toon's main antagonist? Even though it's not possible to design one, there are tons of great villains to pick from in Azeroth. For my main, a Blood Elf paladin, I figure Kael'thas fits best. Lore-wise, he betrayed his people by making them dependent on demonic magic, so he'd be the top of any Sin'dorei hit list . It's also nice that whenever I am bored or frustrated with endgame content, he is always waiting in Magister's Terrace for me to pound on in hopes of getting a white chicken to ride!
Who is your in-game nemesis? Is it a player from the opposing faction who is always capping flags in your battlegrounds? Is it that druid who is constantly grabbing your herbs a second before you can? Is it a raid boss your group is having trouble on? Is there a particular mob (or critter) that you cannot stand to let live?

But I love the Fel Reavers! Such sweet music they make!

Honestly, they come up to me on tiptoes. Never see them, never hear them. They creep up "Slowly....slowly..." And then BANG.

Hear hear 'bout the Reavers.

Blizzard. For making all cool stuff unobtainable.
Joseph Smith Sep 18th 2011 12:05PM
Funny, I thought the complaint was that Blizzard was making TOO much accessible...?

Murlocs. My first death ever in the game was to a Murloc. I hate those guys.
Aaaaaughibbrgubugbugrguburgle!

I totally have to agree here. I leveled my Draenai main through the human starter zone (just because I like it better - that hasn't changed in Cata), and I didn't die ONCE... until I hit the "find the guy's corpse in the middle of a Murloc village" quest. Then I died so much I almost ragequit the game.
Even now, when I hear that "grrruugmeurguglglglglgl!" battlecry, part of me starts freaking out. And when I'm annoyed with something, I tend to return to that particular murloc village... and massacre it.
I had a conflict of interest when doing the post-Cata quests in Blasted Lands that have you working with and SAVING Murlocs. I just kept telling myself, "This is a different character. She hasn't had the murloc experiences that Des (my main) has had..." But still, I just plain don't like the slimy things.

Reminds me of my husband... He used to go back to the murloc area of Elwynn Forest on his lock and use rain of fire on them. Just for fun, just to hear their fishy death rattles.

I didnt think i had one, till i read this. then i realized that everytime when i play when i deal with murlocs, there is this reservation. a Respect, a rivalry. When i kill the nightmare in wailing caverns its with vigor. When i go through murloc villages on a ground mount, even if i'm so much higher level than them, i know a swarm of them can dismount and inconvenience me. Everytime in my career i've seen cookie coming around the corner it usually proceeded screaming and death (cus we almost never fought him when ready, he always ambushed us). Even saving the murlocs in Borean Tundra felt like those Star Trek (original) or Enterprise episodes when you allied with the klingons (They where enemies then, for those who dont know, so any allying was based on a "we have to team up if we are to survive" moment) and anytime i quest near murlocs, even if i know they are spread out and that i have many ass saving abilities, i know it can go wrong at any moment.
Its like fighting cute, annoying, ugly xenomorphs.

"Ah, Murlocs, I remember you well. The very bain of my existence in WoW. You have continually ambushed me, 'grggllle' battle cry at me, and I felt your sting.
I have only one thing to say to you, Murlocs!!! DIE! DIE A HORRIBLE MISSHAPEN LIFE!!
The only time I feel pity for you is in the Blasted Lands and I will fight to save your babies. Why, I don't know, but they are soooo cute!" -- Shinanji
Actually, I would love to play as a Murloc, even though they drove me crazy in the Human Starting area. The only other terror I faced was old school Hogger, Pre-Cata. He would kill me everytime.

Fel Reaver. Oh how I curse him!
Telrik Sep 18th 2011 9:49AM
I can't believe someone else feels the same way about Fel Reavers as I do. Every time I fly through Outlands if I see that red text off in the distance I'll go out of my way to kill one. Who doesn't remember the ground suddenly shaking and that foghorn- like wail sounding suddenly in your ear the first time a Fel Reaver snuck up on you and pounded you into a small red spot in the sand?
Jamie Sep 18th 2011 8:34AM
Timber in the Dun Morogh, I found out he survived the Cataclysm. He's gonn wish he didn't! I killed him a few hours ago while running Gnomeregan for the engineering pets.
Also Ol' Sooty, in Loch Modan. When I first starting playing WoW bak in TBC he & my Dwarf Paladin had one heck of a fight it seemed. So whenever I passed through there I'd make it a point to kill him.
I also held a grudge with Devilsaurs. Damn it felt good killing those things in Wrath as a Ret Paladin. EAT VENGEFUL LIGHT, YOU PREHISTORIC MELON FARMER!!!
Gendou Sep 18th 2011 8:39AM
Gnomes.
Every gnomes.
All gnomes.
Everywhere.
Forever.
Jamie Sep 18th 2011 8:45AM
You sir, have made the list! ;)
loop_not_defined Sep 18th 2011 8:49AM
If you play on a PVP server, you have been spat on by a gnome at least once.
I'd say that, if you get killed by a gnome, there's a 95% chance it will spit on you.
ferninii Sep 18th 2011 9:06AM
Can't say I've ever died to a gnome outside of a BG, any time I got ganked while leveling it was without fail, almost always some fugly Nelf DK.
Brock Sep 18th 2011 1:43PM
/signed.
I hate gnomes. They are like a 14 on creepy scale of 1-10. I also assume the people who play them are creepy too.
Remember the gnomegeddon quest in Uldum?. Boy that one felt good! I think I must have smashed a million of them before I quit.
StClair Sep 19th 2011 12:27PM
I submit that your problem is not gnomes, but PvP servers and/or the sort of people who play there.
Mortenebra Sep 18th 2011 8:46AM
I hate gnolls... I hate troggs... But I think the one NPC I utterly despise is that damnable bird in Badlands. Xeracoatl? Xoacoatl? Whatever... Anyone who's been slaughtered by him (or her, I can't tell)--and then eaten!!--knows what I'm talking about. And not only that! You're told, as the player, via emote, that, whereupon the bird was so dreadfully agitated by your oh-so rude interruption of his zen-like state in life, (s)he's much more calmer now since (s)he's eaten your remains. Oh happy flippin' day!
That poor, forlorn, misunderstood bird. It doesn't *want* to gank players who are way below its level even though it's the bird who is way too high a level for the region.
I remember first encountering the bird on my very first character-- my human lock-- back in late Vanilla. When I dinged 60, I went back and summarily beat the crap out of the bird. It felt very good. Don't tell PETA.
