Blizzard clarifies transmogrification rules

Personally, I am still of the opinion that a lot of the fun items that will not be available for transmog purposes should be. It's Warcraft, after all, and the goofy aesthetic has permeated all aspects of the game. It's not a huge loss, but one that would have its fun purposes. All in all, these transmog rules feel pretty lenient and acceptable to me, and I think that the new system is a great step in the right direction for more player customization.
Blizzard clarifies transmogrification guidelines
Since we announced the transmogrification feature coming to World of Warcraft with patch 4.3, we have monitored thousands of follow-up comments, questions and suggestions from players all over the world.
What follows is our current list of rules for transmogrification. This is a set of rules that we expect to change over time, and is not intended to be 100% comprehensive, but we hope that it can be referenced to answer most questions that players currently have about what they can and cannot expect to be able to do with transmogrification.
• The character must be able to equip both items.
• Only common (green), rare (blue) or epic (purple) items may be transmogrified. (exceptions: a select few of these items will prevented from being used to transmogrify if they are inappropriate)
• Items must share the same armor type (examples: plate for plate, cloth for cloth)
• Weapons must be the same weapon type (exceptions: Guns, Crossbows, or Bows)
• Guns, Crossbows, and Bows can be used to transmogrify Guns, Crossbows, or Bows.
• Main hand weapons can only be used to transmogrify Main hand weapons.
• Off-hand weapons can only be used to transmogrify Off-hand weapons.
• One handed weapons can be used to transmogrify a Main hand or Off-hand weapon.
• Using an item for transmogrify makes it soulbound.
• Using an item for transmogrify makes it non-refundable.
• Using an item for transmogrify makes it non-tradable.
• Heirlooms and Account Bound items can be transmogrified.
• Heirlooms and Account Bound items can be used to transmogrify.
• Legendary items cannot be transmogrified.
• Legendary items cannot be used to transmogrify.
• Fishing Poles cannot be transmogrified.
• Fishing Poles cannot be used to transmogrify.
• Mailing an item strips its transmogrification.
• Placing an item in Void Storage strips its transmogrification.
• Vendoring an item strips its transmogrification.
• The displayed enchant will be that of the currently equipped item.
• There may be individual items that are excluded from being transmogrified on the basis that they were originally added to the game as absurdities. (examples: a weapon that looks like a fish, or a chest piece that is invisible)

My Hunter uses guns, hates the sound. I've used this for years:

Much better than BANG BANG!

Guns/bows/crossbows are a delivery system for projectiles. High end Guns/bows/crossbows have basically the same stats across the board, accept one may offer haste instead of mastery.
Maces, 2h maces, swords, 2h swords, daggers, 2h daggers and so on all have different stats, looks, dps, and even have gem slots.
To change a weapon with the same delivery system is to just change the apperance. To change a 2h mace into a 2h sword changes the way the weapon works. The same with a 1h dagger to a 1h sword. Is it fair to be swinging a sword at the same attack speed as a 1h dagger? No.
For PVP, you don't see what ranged weapon the hunter is using, you see that he's using one. With a rogue, you note if he's using a dagger or a sword in their main hand.
It may not seem "fair", but it is logical. We as hunters are limited in our delivery system, now that melee is non existent. You do not see our weapon until it's drawn, and even then, only another hunter is going to say "holy crap, your bow is awesome!".
I suggest those with a problem get over it. You obviously don't play a hunter, or haven't lvl'd one past 85.

The invisible leather chestpiece ... untransmogrifiable? Noooooooes! Demon hunters are ensaddened. :(

Yeah, this is really frustrating to me. I play a Dwarf Shaman and wanted to created a Wildhammer Dwarf Shaman set. Well, guess what? Many of the Wildhammer Shaman NPCs in the game are shirtless. They have feathery shoulders, a kilt, and gloves. And it looks awesome. All I want is to follow the standard that Blizzard themselves set for Wildhammer Dwarves. But apparently what's awesome for NPCs is an unacceptable absurdity for me.

My ever-shirtless worgen hunter, Keeshan, (what, JJ could use a Gilnean cousin!) CURSES THEE, BLIZZ!

You mean Sandrene's Invisible Vest (http://www.wowhead.com/item=59295 [Horde] and http://www.wowhead.com/item=59253 [Alliance])? Agreed, that is a (small) bummer.

Oh well, there's always the Ceremonial Leather Harness (http://www.wowhead.com/item=3313), and the Barbaric and Warbear harnesses (http://www.wowhead.com/item=5739 and http://www.wowhead.com/item=15064).

Invisible chest piece?!
Fletcher Sep 19th 2011 10:15PM
It's a drop from the Hinterlands. One of the quests that take you into Jintha'alor. And it is indeed invisible.
Stonebeard Sep 19th 2011 10:18PM
1. This. What is it?
2. Why not? Blademasters? Demon-hunters? Not exactly the same as fighting with a fishing pole...

Sandrene's Invisible Vest

I really wish I had known about transmogrification a few weeks sooner. I had pretty much JUST sold my invisible chest as I upgraded. I know it can't be used right away, but I still would have kept it against the hope that it could have been used one day.

So... is this one of the Fox-paladin's armor items?
Minstrel Sep 19th 2011 10:10PM
"One handed weapons can be used to transmogrify a Main hand or Off-hand weapon."
As a priest main, this absolutely makes my day. There are a number of "one-hand" daggers that I think look great, but all caster daggers are "main hand." I'm so happy I can use the models of "one-hand" daggers.

I don't understand why transmogging an item to look like a legendary isn't allowed. It doesn't cheapen the legendary any more than having it sit in the bank for years upon years would.
sharklarson Sep 19th 2011 10:22PM
I have a theory on that... It is my thought, that blizzard will be retooling legendary items as some sort of soulbound heirloom that will level through to a heroic type item level. Its a long shot, but I can't shake the feeling that I'm right about this... otherwise, legendary items aren't that legendary..... The fact that Illidans blades can barely hurt a baradin fox makes me sad....
Cheeselandman Sep 19th 2011 10:56PM
Lies. There is someone who pvp's in battlegrounds on my server with dual warglaives, and will kill anyone he sees. Quite efficiently too.

"This is a set of rules that we expect to change over time, and is not intended to be 100% comprehensive..."
It's not set in stone. It's only, " mostly" in stone. I agree on the legendaries. IMO I think you will get to either transmog them at some point or they will scale up. Legendaries should not be a one expac item, especially since who knows when you would get one again for that class.
weepixie Sep 20th 2011 7:16AM
I still don't understand why legendaries are being excluded, nor do I agree with it. You either had to do a ton of work or be really freaking lucky in order to have something that, FINALLY, you might be able to display actively rather than watching it gather dust in your bank. I'm on an RP-PvP server so I do, on occasion, get to see people sporting their legendaries, which is pretty dang fun. Aren't these supposed to be, you know, LEGENDARY?! As in really special and awesome? What's wrong with letting us ogle them? What's wrong with ooohs and ahhs of awe and appreciation? Sheesh.
Some of those took many, many hours (and help) to acquire and I don't understand why Bliz is preventing people who have them from finally getting to "use" them. I guess they're just a reminder that you were maybe special once.
GuyverIV Sep 19th 2011 10:15PM
Well, the silly rules are a little bit of a bummer ("HERRING SEEKS YOUR LIFE!!!!") since I'm sure they're gonna include the broken bottle daggers and mug-maces.
*shrug* Ahhh, well. Whaddya gonna do?
