Blizzard clarifies transmogrification rules

Personally, I am still of the opinion that a lot of the fun items that will not be available for transmog purposes should be. It's Warcraft, after all, and the goofy aesthetic has permeated all aspects of the game. It's not a huge loss, but one that would have its fun purposes. All in all, these transmog rules feel pretty lenient and acceptable to me, and I think that the new system is a great step in the right direction for more player customization.
Blizzard clarifies transmogrification guidelines
Since we announced the transmogrification feature coming to World of Warcraft with patch 4.3, we have monitored thousands of follow-up comments, questions and suggestions from players all over the world.
What follows is our current list of rules for transmogrification. This is a set of rules that we expect to change over time, and is not intended to be 100% comprehensive, but we hope that it can be referenced to answer most questions that players currently have about what they can and cannot expect to be able to do with transmogrification.
• The character must be able to equip both items.
• Only common (green), rare (blue) or epic (purple) items may be transmogrified. (exceptions: a select few of these items will prevented from being used to transmogrify if they are inappropriate)
• Items must share the same armor type (examples: plate for plate, cloth for cloth)
• Weapons must be the same weapon type (exceptions: Guns, Crossbows, or Bows)
• Guns, Crossbows, and Bows can be used to transmogrify Guns, Crossbows, or Bows.
• Main hand weapons can only be used to transmogrify Main hand weapons.
• Off-hand weapons can only be used to transmogrify Off-hand weapons.
• One handed weapons can be used to transmogrify a Main hand or Off-hand weapon.
• Using an item for transmogrify makes it soulbound.
• Using an item for transmogrify makes it non-refundable.
• Using an item for transmogrify makes it non-tradable.
• Heirlooms and Account Bound items can be transmogrified.
• Heirlooms and Account Bound items can be used to transmogrify.
• Legendary items cannot be transmogrified.
• Legendary items cannot be used to transmogrify.
• Fishing Poles cannot be transmogrified.
• Fishing Poles cannot be used to transmogrify.
• Mailing an item strips its transmogrification.
• Placing an item in Void Storage strips its transmogrification.
• Vendoring an item strips its transmogrification.
• The displayed enchant will be that of the currently equipped item.
• There may be individual items that are excluded from being transmogrified on the basis that they were originally added to the game as absurdities. (examples: a weapon that looks like a fish, or a chest piece that is invisible)

They might be lifted at sometime. Right now they are probably limited to a few hundred/thousand items that they preload into the transmogrificator thingy. It probably takes a lot of jigawatts to operate. I mean come on people flux capacitors don't grow on trees.

I have to admit to being extremely disappointed since I spent the time to fish up two Dark Herrings for my Rogue. So sad.

So this completely means that my Paladin wont be able to run around in the scarlet crusade set cause is mail and he will be wearing plate :"(. I am OK with this rules they don't seem to restrictive and in the end that's what we want out of transmogrification.
P.S. here is hoping for Scalet Monastery going heroic so i can get that scarlet crusade set.
MusedMoose Sep 19th 2011 10:30PM
Seconded on the hope for Scarlet Monastery heroic modes. My DK would utterly love to rock a set of Scarlet Plate she ripped from their cold, dead hands. ^_^

I feel your pain keenly, O Scarlet Kindred.
So just in case, I gathered up a nice red plate set. May I suggest the Thorium (blacksmith crafted), Commander's and Bloodlust sets? Mix and match to your own tastes.
(At least I can transmogrify my Mograine's Might!)
RetPallyJil Sep 19th 2011 11:16PM
Correction: Bloodforged, not Bloodlust :D
sporkwind Sep 20th 2011 10:43AM
that is a good point. A lot of the lower gear that pallies wear below lvl 40 is mail gear.
Ditto for the mail wearers with leather.
And yes please to Scarlet Heroics.

LOve it, but the only thing I woudl ask is a way to overlay or even hide enchantments.
With landslide, my weapons look like they are taking a dump. And a lot of weapons come wiht thier own little subtle glow or effects that look a LOT cooler than a big smear of red or yellow.
Amanda A. Sep 20th 2011 2:38AM
Usually, weapons with a glow will not show enchants; the weapon's own effect overwrites it. :)

Inorite? One of my saddest days in WoW was when I could finally afford that top-end weapon enchant for my shaman, but then I realized it hid my windfury...
Dragoniel Sep 20th 2011 3:17AM
Pesonally, I will just go without enchant.
But then, I'm no raider, I couldn't care less about numbers. I can kill in PvP just as fine without no enchants if needs be.
Khoonda Sep 19th 2011 10:17PM
so... the only addition they've made is
"no invisible shirts"
that's it?
Magma Sep 19th 2011 10:18PM
> Heirlooms and Account Bound items can be transmogrified.
:D
> Mailing an item strips its transmogrification.
.... :(
Hellwraith Sep 19th 2011 10:23PM
Yeah, hahahah I thought the same thing: wth with teasing me?!
MusedMoose Sep 19th 2011 11:37PM
I'm assuming it's to keep level 1 characters from running around in current-tier gear. ^_^
And I think it's a good decision. By requiring a soulbound item for transmogrification, you can never have a character wear something they haven't earned. It keeps people from being misleading about a character's skill. Would you want someone in your dungeon group who looked like they were decked out in full tier 13 but couldn't handle a heroic with that character? Seems kind of misleading.
Artificial Sep 20th 2011 12:53AM
"By requiring a soulbound item for transmogrification, you can never have a character wear something they haven't earned."
Except, of course, for heirlooms, which are by definition hand me downs earned by a different character. This understood, Blizzard's policy here makes absolutely no sense at all whatsoever. Complete logic fail...
Artificial Sep 20th 2011 1:06AM
Also, it should be noted that it would not be the slightest bit misleading, unless someone is so utter unfamiliar with the game that they actually believe a level 20 character running SFK with them can don tier 13 armor. If they're that unfamiliar with the game, how can they possibly recognize it as tier 13 armor rather then just saying, "hey, cool art, never seen that before"? They wouldn't, so it wouldn't be misleading to them either. It would, in fact, be misleading to precisely no one at all. Again, complete logic fail here...
Ausara Sep 20th 2011 7:28AM
BoA items are too useful, and because they can be swapped back and forth between characters, so you could essentially be mailing Tier 11 equipment to a level 1 (or what looks like Tier 11). Which would totally not make any sense, which I think their reasoning. Lore-wise, it breaks the story.
Gigafreak Sep 20th 2011 9:18AM
Let's say my main's a Mage and my alt's a Priest.
I get some cloth heirlooms and transmogrify them into my Mage tier sets.
If I mailed the now Mage-y heirlooms to my Priest, everyone would pester me for intellect buffs and mage snacks. (Also it indirectly violates the rule of "you can't transmogrify your gear into something your class can't wear," but dammit Jim I'm a healer, not a cake dispenser!)
Jen Sep 19th 2011 10:19PM
There goes my plans of using that fish mace! I am waiting to know how they decide if a piece is silly or not, does that mean that leather chest which is basically a few thin leather straps buckled together is considered silly, or a ligh sabre sword (I hope not since I have both to sell in the future). Funny though, I didn't even realize there were invisible pieces of gear.
I must admit, I am having a lot of fun finding gear to transmog myself or to pick up super cheap to sell in the first days of 4.3. http://www.wowtransmog.com is my new best friend instead of using the AH dressing room everyday to try and find cool looking greens and blues to transmog.
The only downfall of transmogging is that I am running out of bank space because I've run so many old school raids for old tier and cool looking weapons. I wish void storage was here already.
