I always recommend that if you're going to take an off spec, you should keep an eye out for gear for the spec. If you don't really want to USE the spec, you don't have to. But if you don't get the gear, you won't be able to when push comes to shove.
As well, it's a lot easier to get started learning a new spec if you've already collected a set of gear that will let you pretend you know what you're doing. PvP gear may be some small help towards collecting minimally useful gear.
