Sometimes they weren't used maliciously. I had a character named Eargûl (sorcerous sea in Sindarin), that would not have been linguistically accurate had I named him Eargul. The special characters were a tool for pedantic fantasy fans everywhere!
But I can't say I lament the passing of special characters used to bypass names already taken.
