Patch 4.3 PTR: New level 80 gear sets for every class
Here's an interesting tidbit of information coming out of the news from the patch 4.3 PTR: Each class has a level 80 set of gear at ilevel 232 that covers every spec and gear slot from head to toe, weapons, rings and trinkets included. We have no idea what purpose these sets serve or where and how they are obtained, but each set is in the files and has art that matches the level 68 to 70 gear one picks up in Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord.
We could speculate a million different explanations for these sets. A new service or gameplay mechanic to make new characters that start at level 80, perhaps? We'll know soon, hopefully. Here are all of the set names, with Wowhead links for those curious souls.
Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with patch 4.3. Review the official patch notes, and then dig into what's ahead: new item storage options, cross-realm raiding, cosmetic armor skinning and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing -- from astride his back!

Just a minor nitpick, but the gear you get in Howling Fjord and Borean Tundra is lvl 68-70 gear. Lvl 78-80 gear would come from Icecrown and Storm Peaks. Just sayin.

You missed where it said the "art" of Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord gear. It is level 78-80 gear that *looks like* 68-70 gear.

@Shinae
"has art that matches the level 78-80 gear one picks up in Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord"
I saw the art matches the gear you get in BT and HF. However, as quoted from the article, they state that gear you pick up in BT and HF is 78-80 gear.
Lumi Sep 28th 2011 4:09PM
He means that the art matches the HF/BT greens, not the stats or levels.
On topic: I hope there won't be a service that allows characters to start at 80. That would be a bit weird; people take a long time leveling all that and suddenly they would start offering that for money? ...Nah.
The sets do have unique names though and I believe this does indeed imply meaning aside from just pre-made PTR characters. Not sure what though...

@Rhüarc
Ha! My bad. I guess I'm good at missing typos when I know what they meant.

Fixed, thanks.

I'd say it's actually probably *very* likely that it's just placeholder graphics.
That crappy Northrend gear has often been the go-to for PH graphics since Wrath came out.

My guess? Ease the shock of leveling new characters when they go from Wrath-->Cata content. Those first few quests when you get to Hyjal/Vash'jir can be rocky if you're in leveling gear from Wrath.
Shinae Sep 28th 2011 4:10PM
Indeed. There's a huge jump between Wrath quest greens & blues and Cata quest greens.

Completely. I don't dare set foot in Cata content on new alts until I've scrounged all I can from the AH. The quests were great and balanced at 80 on my Wrath toons in 232/251 gear. On a character in Wrath greens, some of which are still from level 75-ish? Yeah. Ow my face. Over and over ow my face.
Caliea Sep 28th 2011 4:13PM
Hadn't thought of that... I went from ICC gear into Cata zones and haven't gotten an alt high enough to have the transition from leveling Wrath gear to leveling Cata. It wasn't bad in raid gear - guess it hurts more in quest gear :)
Tirrimas Sep 28th 2011 4:30PM
@Caliea:
Yeah. It hurts.
A lot.

I've only taken one toon right from Wrath questing to Cata questing and I didn't have too much trouble. Course that was an Atonement spec Disc Priest, and I think I mixed in BGs as well to ease the leveling process.

It's nice that there maybe will be an option to get them. If it can't be earned from 75-80 though it's a complete waste. doing the first 4-5 quests sets you up pretty good when you get to Hyjal/Vashj'ir. Most toons should have 4-5kg by the time they hit 80 unless you buy 280% flying. Plenty enough to buy a couple cata greens.

I had a problem on my Rogue just last night due to "Holy crap, my gear is freaking old!" issues.
However, it only lasted until I swapped over to Assassination from Subtlety... then it was all good again.
That being said: Anything that helps people ease into the new content (without having to swap specs) is greatly appreciated... you know, for when my next alt rears its ugly head.
frozndevl Sep 28th 2011 4:37PM
I guess there is a "shock" if that means you can't chain pull mobs without regenning. Having leveled a mage and a rogue straight through Wrath content and Cata content without optimizing, it was completely doable but just a bit slower.

I went from NR to Cataclysm in quest greens with little to no problem at all.
The problem is is that everything up until then is far far too easy and a lot of players have no idea how to actually play their class.
relmatos Sep 28th 2011 5:16PM
Another thing this will hopefully fix is the lack of ilevel on heirlooms that prevents you from geting in dungeons once you hit 80.
Katherine Sep 28th 2011 5:19PM
This is what I was going to say too. Questing in ilevel 178 quest greens? It was nearly ok on my warlock, but I was glad to have raid gear on my pally and priest.
