Patch 4.3 PTR: Transmogrification and Void Storage gallery
My first action after leaping onto the patch 4.3 PTR was to hunt down the Transmogrification and Void Storage vendors immediately. Apparently everyone else had the same idea too, as the little building was crammed full of players eagerly changing the appearance of their gear. Transmogrification is an incredibly simple process, and Void Storage is just as easy -- all that's required is dragging and dropping your gear and gold.
Did I mention gold? There's a lot of gold involved currently. In order to open up your Void Storage vault, there is a fee of 1,000g. Once you've opened the vault, it costs a whopping 100g per item to deposit it into your vault -- and another 100g per item to remove it. With 80 slots available to fill, that quickly adds up to 8,000g just to place all your items into Void Storage. Want to take them out? It's another 8,000g.
Keep in mind, however, this is the PTR and prices may change -- although most players have so much gold on their hands by now that this could almost be considered a needed gold sink.

Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with patch 4.3. Review the official patch notes, and then dig into what's ahead: new item storage options, cross-realm raiding, cosmetic armor skinning and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing -- from astride his back!

Also, the @Warcraft twitter account just posted the following, in response to this very article:
The #Warcraft patch notes do specifically say the prices aren't final. RT @WoWInsider: Void Storage is...a little expensive.

@Minstrel
Me too! I absolutely assumed that Void Storage was designed to be used primarily and side-by-side with Transmogging. I now realize Blizz never actually said they would do this, but it just seemed so rational and natural; you put your pieces of cosmetic gear in Void Storage, you move 2 meters to the side and do business with the Transmog guy, who allows you to select your Void Stored items to be used for Transmogrification from a drop-down menu (showing the appropriate items for the slot). Or you can use stuff in your bags. This is how I thought it would happen.
I mean, Void Storage removes enchants and stores only the item id number. Wouldn't this make the service ideal for most Transmog gear? It's not like you need old tier stuff lying around in your bags or bank for any other use.

Ah...well...that went from something I was excited to to something I will never use pretty quick. I am supremely cheap.
Brett Porter Sep 28th 2011 5:38PM
I'm not cheap, but I'm also not rolling around in gold like folks assume everyone is. I don't even spend money on much :-/
Drakkenfyre Sep 28th 2011 1:10PM
I have gotten to the point whenever Blizzard says "prices may change", I know they don't, really.
Prices usually stay the same, or they drop a couple hundred gold, and that's it.
terph Sep 28th 2011 1:53PM
Not necessarily. Look at dual spec talents. At first it was 1k. Then it dropped to a hundred. Now it's what, 10 G?
Drakkenfyre Sep 28th 2011 2:00PM
"Prices may change", in the context of a PTR.
"Hey, this thing costs 1000g. Prices are not final, and may change." On release date: "Hey, this thing is 1000g."
It's happened before.
In fact, the reverse has happened before. Cold-Weather Flying was originally described as "free, you do a quest for it. In fact, the quest pays you!", then on release it was a 1000g trained ability.
Of course prices will drop over time, but when they announce a price for it on a preview or PTR, and it's 1000g, it almost never drops, or if it does, it drops slightly.
Chetti Sep 28th 2011 2:21PM
Yeah, its 10g now, I guess to encourage everyone to try a second spec. I remember not getting it on my main (when it was 1000g) until after level cap because I just didn't have the gold to drop on it and no real interest. When I wanted to duel spec my pally, and saw it was so cheap I was happy (because really, if I don't have to spend 1k why would I) but then wanted to kick myself for dumping 1k into a "main" that has since been retired.. twice now for 2 different new mains. I actually never intended for my undead priest to heal, so I leveled as shadow. Picked up disc at 30 just in case, like if a healer went down and it took too long to get another one I could swap out. Or for guild purposes, if a healer was needed, I could do it.. Its just something thats so cheap now, its done almost without thinking (at least for me).
lolikitty Sep 28th 2011 1:10PM
Apparently you don't really get to organize how everything is displayed in the void storage, aside from the order in which you place items in it ... it's ok *twitch* no big deal *twitch*
Kylenne Sep 28th 2011 1:28PM
I'm sure add-ons will pick up the slack on that.
Lemons Sep 28th 2011 2:32PM
I was able to reorder items in void storage on the PTR last night. I assume that's still the case unless something has changed in the last eight hours.
lolikitty Sep 28th 2011 3:01PM
yay! Thanks for the feedback

I hate how people say most players have a lot of gold without anything to back it up. From personal experience (which admittedly may not represent the majority) most players have barely enough gold to get by with regular activities (dungeons, raiding, etc) let alone that kind of cash to throw around.
If the prices stay the same, nobody in my circle of ingame friends will be able to use it, even if they want to.

"From personal experience (which admittedly may not represent the majority) most players have barely enough gold to get by with regular activities (dungeons, raiding, etc) let alone that kind of cash to throw around."
The problem with your logic is that dungeons, raiding, and even "etc" are all great ways to make gold in WoW. The reason these people are broke is because they are bad at math or simply are not as good at in-game economics as they are at raiding or doing dungeons. Or maybe, they just suck at both?
If you roll GREED on a blue or purple item you don't need and vendor it when you have the opportunity to roll DISENCHANT instead, you are passing up 100g or even potentially 200g. If you vendor your greens instead of AHing or disenchanting them, you are giving up even more gold. I see so many people make dumb mistakes like these every day and then bitch that they're broke. No sympathy - sorry. It only takes seconds to AH a shard or crystal, there are no excuses for being broke in WoW with gathering professions, daily quests, and even 80g from doing a random heroic.
Of course, 100g for Void Storage of one item is still ridiculous IMO. And that is coming from someone who could actually afford it too!!! Blizz should lower this so it's accessible to anyone. If nothing else, people who are "poor" in-game probably need Void Storage than us rich folk as they're probably hoarding a bunch of useless junk in their bank anyway.
ZephyrSP Sep 28th 2011 1:50PM
Indeed, your milage may vary on this experience.
I myself haven't been short for gold hardly at all. After hitting 80ish, the quest rewards and pug rewards have kept me in reasonable g pretty much at all times. While I do have engineering and enchanting maxed out, I haven't really done any true gold-making efforts other than selling the results of leveling the skills (and I can't think I've net profited off of either as a result). I don't buy gear off the AH much, and basically just stick to common-sense; sell or DE boe's when profitable, buy low and sell high. Addons like Auctionator and Lil Sparky's Workshop make that easy.
I hover around 9k-13k these days, only really buying gems/enchants/mats as needed and repairs. I may not have a Traveller's Mammoth or a Mehano-Hog, but I can afford to optimize my gear and stay well repaired.
And Void Storage is not meant for me. I still have bank bags slots with Netherweave Bags in them - this feature is for the folks who have maxed out bank slots with the biggest bags and still can't fit everything, who also have copious g to spare. And little to spend it on.
Kira Sep 28th 2011 1:55PM
That's all well and good to say, but we don't AH mats for things because we work together to help the guild. Profession mats are shared among everyone.
incoming00 Sep 28th 2011 1:13PM
if that ends up being the prices when it hits live, i will not be using that service. i can see the benefits with some users who farm and sell, and have the gold, since they can store lots of items they wont be using for a while to make space for mats. but as an average user, i'd rather save my gold and deal with always having 10 slots open on my bags with my bank always full. i guess i would just have to start sorting and vendering what i really dont need...
Revynn Sep 28th 2011 2:29PM
- "but as an average user, i'd rather save my gold and deal with always having 10 slots open on my bags with my bank always full."
I have almost 200K gold and I still think it's an absurd amount of money. IMO, it should be a one time fee per item (upon deposit but not withdrawal, I mean) of 50G. It'd still be really draining if you abuse the space and constantly move stuff in and out, but not so much that it keeps the average player from using it.
wat Sep 28th 2011 1:17PM
Oh goody. A nice gold-sink to support the gold sellers.
Glad Blizz is catering to their entire fan base.
Didax Sep 28th 2011 1:56PM
You don't seem to understand the benefits of a gold sink in WoW.
Check out the great write-up and subsequent comments in the Gold Capped article:
http://wow.joystiq.com/2011/09/19/gold-capped-warcraft-needs-a-new-gold-sink-and-it-needs-it-yes/
But briefly: gold sinks remove gold from the economy, which makes people willing to pay less on the AH for often used items and materials. As the price of an item is generally set by what people are willing to pay, prices will go down.
