Patch 4.3 PTR: Transmogrification and Void Storage gallery
My first action after leaping onto the patch 4.3 PTR was to hunt down the Transmogrification and Void Storage vendors immediately. Apparently everyone else had the same idea too, as the little building was crammed full of players eagerly changing the appearance of their gear. Transmogrification is an incredibly simple process, and Void Storage is just as easy -- all that's required is dragging and dropping your gear and gold.
Did I mention gold? There's a lot of gold involved currently. In order to open up your Void Storage vault, there is a fee of 1,000g. Once you've opened the vault, it costs a whopping 100g per item to deposit it into your vault -- and another 100g per item to remove it. With 80 slots available to fill, that quickly adds up to 8,000g just to place all your items into Void Storage. Want to take them out? It's another 8,000g.
Keep in mind, however, this is the PTR and prices may change -- although most players have so much gold on their hands by now that this could almost be considered a needed gold sink.

Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with patch 4.3. Review the official patch notes, and then dig into what's ahead: new item storage options, cross-realm raiding, cosmetic armor skinning and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing -- from astride his back!

Honestly - I am with Loop here. If you look at my statistics page, it'll tell you my Paladin, who is my main, has raked in something like 400k over the years. You'd think he's rich!
I still have never really held on to more than 6k at a time, server wide, and that is when I am saving up for a flying purchase.
I am in agreement that we are going to see a lot of people turned off by the price.
Blizzard may need to accept they have screwed up the enconomy pretty badly, and this is not the time or way to fix it. Give me new dailies that give 25 gold a pop for now, and take the time to add new sinks to MoP.

Does anyone know whether you can transmog to items that are in your Void Storage, or does the target item have to be in your character's inventory before you can complete the transmog?
I really don't want to carry around an extra 'set' of transmogging gear.
pongmo Sep 28th 2011 2:02PM
That's the point of Void Storage...
Neodarkmatter Sep 28th 2011 3:14PM
To transmog it you have to have the item in your bag at the time of the transmog. Once your gear has been transmog'd the gear you used can be placed back in your bank or void storage.

I'll be there too. Any extra gold I may make will be reserved for +280 flight on alts.

I agree with everyone who said the same kinds of things.

Stop with the "gold sink" theory. It's counter-intuitive. Massively expensive things like this only drives people to buy gold even more. The gold buyers are the ones inflating prices, not average gamers. You think if you make something expensive like this, suddenly gold buyers will farm, spend and obtain gold legitimately? Of course not. You're simply giving them another reason to buy gold and reinforcing the temptation for those who don't. Expensive "sinks" like this only diminishes the middle class of WoW and pushes them to the top or bottom even more.

Gold sinks do not cause inflation. They reduce inflation.
If there were no gold sinks (no repairs, no vendor items, no AH cut, no vial of the sands, etc.) there would be a perpetually increasing amount of gold in the virtual economy coming from quests, mobs, and vendored items.
Each player, the longer they played the game, would have increasing amounts of gold piling up. This would lead to inflation and prices would rise on the auction house.
This makes it next to impossible for newer and otherwise poor players to buy anything.
Which would lead unscrupulous players to buy gold.
Gold sinks may make people buy more gold. But they also remove gold from the economy, thus reducing inflation and lowering prices.
Ahem Sep 28th 2011 3:40PM
One major cause of inflation is the ever-increasing amount of total gold in the virtual economy.
Gold sinks remove gold from the virtual economy, distributing it from players to an NPC where it disappears.
Therefore, gold sinks reduce inflation. Q.E.D.

Did it ever occur to anyone that Void Storage is meant to store items for a much longer term basis than your regular bank? Because, that's exactly why it costs money to deposit/remove items. It's not meant for items that you will regularly put in and remove.
Ominous Sep 28th 2011 2:01PM
Good.
It's nice to have something that will make people think twice, before committing to it.
It's a bit like a real bank account, in that way.
Hmmm.
webaker Sep 28th 2011 2:03PM
I mean, yeah, I had more when I was doing the MF dailies or when I had the time to do stuff beyond log on and run an instance or two with guildies before bed.
I think the highest I've ever had is about 7500g though, because I have no patience and also don't play the AH market game very well. XD

I do wonder if everyone who is commenting they would use it if it were cheaper, mad or not that it isn't (for now), has their banks reasonably maxed out. If this were a cheap service, what would happen to high-end bag sales? Why would anyone go past putting Netherweave bags in their bank slots?
This isn't meant to circumvent the costs of upgrading banks slots/bags - it's meant to be a premium addition to it. They're reinforcing this with the cost to remove items - they don't want it to become a second bank. It's more like a deposit box - for the long-term storage of important (but not regularly used) items.
The logic then follows that it should be more cost-effective to make bank slots as big as possible before resorting to the Void for extra space.
I will say that even considering all that, the prices are still hefty to my eye. But I'm not surprised and I understand their reasoning. I suppose they REALLY want to drive that point home that it's not another bank.
Amaxe Sep 28th 2011 2:17PM
I see Void storage as being for people who want to keep items they can't bear to toss but no longer have practicality. Keeping them from being a second bank doesn't mean they have to become ridiculously priced. Simply removing gems and enchants should be enough to prevent that abuse.
restodr00d Sep 28th 2011 2:09PM
Hate that everyone assumes that all the players have a lot of gold on their hands, I'm sorry but by saying that, is like me saying that only a 00.05% is hardcore on the game, yeah, there's no numbers or evidence to back it up.
At all times I have 8k on me and in every alt too but with the prices of VS I won't be using it at all.
Lina Sep 28th 2011 2:22PM
One thing about the void storage that was nice was being able to put in my old tier sets but because I like to change things ALL THE TIME I will want to mog things probably weekly if not more often, if there were some way to maybe place the items in the storage then choose those items from a list and mog them without actually removing them, that would be quite nice. ATM it's looking like useless holiday fun stuff, and things like my brewfest steins will go hang out in storage.
Kar On E Sep 28th 2011 2:21PM
Void Storage looked neat, but that is way too much cost for what you get. It's not that I'm a full-on cheapskate, but it's that I don't really feel that I get that much of a return on my investment for it. As it stands right now, it's far cheaper for me to purchase 7 bank tabs for each of my alts and let them hold onto my items than it would be to open up Void Storage and add/remove items from that. And if I fill up all of those slots...well, I need to be signed up for the WoW edition of Hoarders anyhow. Definitely don't see that giving me my gold's worth.
That being said...give me a player room/house for 1000g and charge me 100g each time I update it, and I'll be begging for loose change on the streets of Stormwind within a week.
Piper Sep 28th 2011 2:25PM
The vault storage is too costly if we're going to be socked depositing *and* withdrawing at 100g a pop. Most folks don't have that kind of gold.
Also, you can't store unique items currently. So much for dumping a bunch of tabards into storage. :sigh:
Plaguewood Sep 28th 2011 2:26PM
Honestly, the whole transmorg and void storage system seems tacked on, at best. Instead of giving players what they've asked for years- additional or shared account wide storage and real customization of their toons- Blizzard gave everyone this clumsy and unwieldy result, which is little more than a gold sink. Honestly, I'm not bashing Blizzard- heck, I defended them constantly during my 5 years of playing. However, it's clear that they seem to have their minds set on things they will or will not allow in Warcraft, even at the expensive of losing tons of players and subscriptions. Although this particular article is only about void storage, it's yet another small example of a much larger problem with WoW today. Unlike many other MMOs, WoW is completely set in its ways, for better or ill. I still miss playing and I love so many aspects of the game, but the inflexible development and lack of current innovation has finally sent myself (and countless others I know) to greener pastures.
