I used to farm Attumen in Karazhan every week for the Fiery Warhorse mount. I used to farm Anzu in Sethekk Halls every day for the Raven Lord mount. I used to farm the quest in Brunnhildar Village every day for the White Polar Bear mount. I used to farm a lot of things ...
One of my longest-running farming attempts was for the elusive Time-Lost Proto-Drake. I would fly around The Storm Peaks for hours while working on homework, watching shows on Netflix Instant, waiting for random heroic queues, etc. After a few months of diligent hunting, my determination to find, kill, and loot the reins of the Time-Lost Proto-Drake was incited all the more when a friend just happened to fly past the dragon on his way from Ulduar to Dalaran.
At first, I was upset that the mount I sought so dearly had fallen haphazardly into his hands. Soon, though, I realized that if someone could get the mount by sheer dumb luck, it would be much more likely that I find it through persistence. After I spent several more months farming, however, this same friend just happened to see the shadow of the Time-Lost Proto-Drake flash by while he was questing in The Storm Peaks on the new Worgen mage he created when Cataclysm dropped. When I saw him flying around on his second TLPD mount, that was the last straw for me. I gave up the hunt.
What items, mounts or achievements bring out the farmer in you? How long have you been farming for that seemingly unobtainable something?

I found TLPD within days of farming. My computer chose THAT MOMENT for the FPS to jerk, so I couldn't catch up to him...
... and a hunter got him.
I was SO PISSED.

Longest: I forget exactly, but 6-9 months for the Raven Lord mount, easily going every 2/3rds of the time every day. So that's a minimum of 120-180 attempts.
I was VERY, VERY lucky with both TLPD and Aeonaxx.
I had a priority for Aeonaxx, but didn't work at it while sleeping.
I half-joked that I would stop playing since I got it. I did. Hahah.
I haven't put in much effort for some things like the two undead horses, or the phoenix.
I was very disappointed that I never got the Headless Horseman's mount though, or the Love Rocket. Those ones that you have odds that could deny you for years really suck.
I got both Brewfest mounts though. I like cross-faction mounts like that, although I wish I had more options. No purple raptor for Alliance.

Last week I got my first (OH) warglaive
This week I get my second (MH) warglaive.
Total stormrage kills: 6
TLPD after 3 nights
Baron's mount after 7 kills
If only current tier gear dropped like that for me. Or my lottery numbers.

Skoll. I can't ever find Skoll on my server. I've searched for that silly spirit wolf for months. I found TLPD while camping him and killed Vyragosa twice, but still no Skoll.

Love the way the mouse over on the piccy brings up the Wowhead tooltip for the Reins of the Time Lost Proto-Drake.
To this day all my flying mounts are Gryphons. *sobs.

I went looking for the White Hawkstrider on my main literally ran every day to get it with my friend, I decide not to go one day and he gets it...I've seen like 4 Orbs drop and never once seen that damn bird. My friends has like 4 toons that have it lol

I DECLARE WAR ON THE ORACLES! To bleep with the little bleepers! Ive bought in the neighborhood of 75 mysterious eggs from those cheaters as I do not own a single protodrake (This over the span of 2 years). I gave up months ago. No green protodrake for me. I did a few weeks of egg-buying when they dropped the hatch time to 3 days, but still no dice. I am out.

There is an unwritten rule to finding rare hunter pets. Give up all hope. Die of despair. Move on. months later, you will run across it in the most random situation when you no longer care. I'd spend weeks at a time, sometimes months, searching for a pet to spawn and never even hear of another player nabbing it in the rare moments I wasnt on. Loquenahak? I gave up 4 months earlier and am flying from Dal to Oracles for another froiking egg when silverdragon goes off. I spent 3 solid weeks over an unemployed summer with 8+ hours a day searching for Nuramoc....1month after cataclysm launches I fly over him while grabbing a windserpent for a raid in BWD (Sorry guys, 5 minutes!!!). I gave up on Skoll 2 years ago. I decide to check for the hell of it a couple months ago while im in bufu Dalaran and there he is. 3 days later, my paladin flies over Terrorpene. Id spent over a month looking for him and then, "Bam!"
Those I actually caught while actively camping? 10 hours sitting under a tree for Humar the Pridelord while reading a book and Madexx on maybe my third attempt.
Give up hope, my friend, and then you may have it.
