Breakfast Topic: How many rolls did it take to get your character right?

A lot of players took a few swings to get their characters right. You might find that that first mage you rolled doesn't really synch with your desire to stab an Ogre with that sword. That Human might have been a bit bland for a game where you could be a goat with face tentacles from space, or a walking slab of USDA-approved beef. I know several people who started playing at the bequest of their friends, made a character, leveled it for a while, only to get the message: "I'm sorry, but your friends are on another server!" It can be a bit jarring, especially if you've leveled into the 40s or 50s when a sizable time investment has been made, but perhaps not enough to justify paying for a server or faction transfer. Mistaken class choices can only be rerolled.
I lucked out. My friend who got me into WoW told me exactly which server and faction to start on before I downloaded the trial account. I picked a Human paladin because I loved paladins in Diablo 2 and started on my voyage. The ability to tank fed into my natural tendency to melee things, and sword and shield has always been my favorite aesthetic weapon choice. Others in my guild were less fortunate. Our mage, who played a paladin in beta, rolled a paladin on live servers, only to find that it was completely different than the class he fell in love with in the beta test. He traipsed through a rogue, priest, and hunter before he got around to maining his mage. Our Draenei enhance shaman started out as a Blood Elf paladin who didn't make it past level 40.
How about you? Is your main your first toon?

Yes! Gnome Rogue ftw!

My first main ever was a gnome rogue.... To this day rogue is the only class I've never leveled past 50 and gnome is the only race I've never leveled past 50. Apparently I made the worst possible choice to start, at least for me.

My paladin was my first max level character in vanilla, but when I realized I would only ever get to spam Flash of Light in MC & BWL, I leveled up my lowbie dwarf priest that I rolled before anyone knew what Fear Ward was. The rest, as they say, is history.

Started in classic and it took me 5 characters to finally settle on something that I could play. Bear in mind that at that time there was no Paid Race Change, so not only did I have to choose a class I connected with, but a race that I felt comfortable playing. I went through
NE Hunter - lvl 22
Orc Hunter - lvl 41
Orc Warlock - lvl 60 (the cap at the time, I even raided on this character a bit but it never really felt right to me so I decided to re-roll again)
Undead Rogue - lvl 41
Tauren Hunter - lvl 60, 70, 80, and now 85.
Having started with the Hunter class, I fell in love with the idea of adventuring through the world with a trusty companion who'd fight for me at my side. But I could never settle on a race till I tried the Tauren. I'd resisted trying out the race before since I felt that a big, lumbering giant wouldn't suit me, but once I rolled one and read up on the lore of the Tauren and their culture, it made me want to smack myself in the head for not having tried the race out sooner. Tauren ftw!

It took me one; I started out with a warrior, and just plain had no idea what I was doing. I'd equip spirit and intellect gear just because it was gear with stats, not paying any attention to what a warrior actually needed, buy lockpicks, unknowing that these were rogue-only tools, etc...just plain bad. Then BC came out, and I rolled a BE rogue (b/c hey, I really like picking pockets and locks) and never looked back. That warrior is no longer with us, but the memories of my foolish attempts at playing will remain.

Druid, first role ... I researched each of the classes before first playing and weirdly enough plumped for druids because of Entangling Roots! ... Aah, the heady days of vanilla :P

First toon I rolled was the one for me. Rogue, obviously (best class) and I knew I had to be Horde because my RL friends were on Horde, but at the time the idea of racials making a difference hadn't occured to my somewhat-nooblet mind so I rolled a Blood Elf due to the finesse the race seemed to (and does) command.

My main is my first... bankalt. I rolled him to run errands for my hunter (which was my first 80, but by no means my first roll). Then one night I was bored out of my mind and started doing some quests on my rogue bankalt, and fell in love :-)

Having started in vanilla, I based my choice of race and class off of the descriptions on the WoW website: Undead Rogue. It was, and has been, the best character fit for me, with Belf Paladin being a close second. The fact that rogues were so fundamentally strong in vanilla also didn't hurt.

How many rolls? 2.
Started on a warrior - reasoning that, as with other (solo) RPGs, warrior would be the easiest starter class, then found out that it wasn't. Still playing my warlock, the second character I ever made (about 3 years ago - 2 weeks after the warrior), she was my main for a good two years.
Although I have since moved into other classes and developed a severe case of altoholism, that warlock is still sitting at the top of my character roster at level 85.

My first was a hunter who is 85 now, Tried a mage and it took 16 times to get one past 20. Now number 17 is 85 and I have another one on the way.

I had tried time and time again to play at first, always rolling some human hunter on a random server.
It wasn't until a girl I was talking to told to roll on a specific server, and showed me the light that was the Horde. Then it took several characters to finally roll my shaman main.

As an altaholic, I've been through this more than a few times. ^_^ While I'm happy and pretty much settled with my current set of characters, I've played and deleted at least three paladins, four hunters, three rogues, two mages, a priest, three warlocks, and a good half-dozen warriors. The highest-levels of those were 73 and 80 back in the WotLK days; yes, I deleted an 80 after deciding that I didn't want to play the character anymore.

I'm currently having that dilema. I recently switched servers to Proudemoore...and when I switched I thought I'd give switching to the other faction a go too. I rolled several toons on the Alliance side and always felt a bit disatisfied. I finally realised that the reason was I hated playing alliance. I switched my Paladin to Horde, joined another guild there and am loving it. I may transfer my DK since he's a max level JCer and I don't really relish leveling that prof up again. After that, though I have about 4 or 5 other 80-85 level toons (mostly level 85) and I have to decide whether to delete them. I'm running out of space on the server and would really like more horde alts....but I can't really justifiy the cost of transfering them all. I've never deleted a max-level toon before though...seems kinda scary.

I deleted a level 70 Druid instead of race changing him when Cataclysm came out. lol

My main is my first and only max-level toon. I rolled a priest on a whim because something about it seemed unique, and human female because my friends all played alliance and I wanted an eyebrow piercing. Once I learned how to become competent at holy, I never looked back. I'm so in love with the play style I've developed with holy, that I get bored whenever leveling an alt, so I just can't get them all the way to max-level.
