A question that has been on my mind way longer than it has any right to have been:How much--if any--interspecies breeding exists in the WoW universe?
Me'dan says hi.

im pretty sure rexxar is a half orc/ogre or somethin like that
10-07-2011 @ 11:14AM
So does Garona. And Rexxar.

I believe Kalecgos is supposed to have the form of a half-elf, though how many ACTUAL half-elves exist is open to speculation.

The answer to that question really depends on what definition of 'species' you use. If you use the definition of a group of organisms that can interbreed and create offspring that can breed... well, it appears that orcs and draenei are, implausibly, one species. And possibly humans and elves and orcs and draenei; I'm not aware of Med'an or any of the Windrunner progeny breeding, so they might be sterile.
To clarify the previous comment, Med'an is a character in the WoW comics whose existence has never been acknowledged in the game. In the comics he is the son of Garona Halforcen (who is half-orc, half-draenei and has been present in the game) and Medhiv, a human. So he is a third human, orc and Draenei. There are numerous half-orc pairings (half orc/human, half orc/ogre, half orc/draenei) dotted about WoW.There are also half-elfs, these seem mainly to be half elf/human. These seem to be uncommon but not unheard of. They include Rohnin's children (he married one of the Windrunner sisters in the novels). Arator the Redeemer is the only actually in game.

And what's his name, Arator the Redeemer, son of the human Turalyon and high elf Alleria Windrunner.Speaking of that, it'd be cool if Arator got to visit his undead aunt Sylvanas in a quest chain.

Garona is Half-Draenei and Half-Orc, and she had a love child with Medivh making a quarter-Orc, Quarter-Draenei, Half-Human Sha-Pala-Mage-adin. It's commonly known that Kalecgos takes the form of a Half-Elf rather than a human and since the term "Half-Elf" exists in WoW lore in the first place, we can assume that there are others. Also, Rhonin is married to Sylvanas' sister and their other sister ran off with another human some time ago. It happens, it's just not particularly common enough to see more than one or two NPC's floating around.

You need to work on your math skills, man. Med'an's dad was a possessed human; that makes him half-human; his mom has half-orc, half-draenei, so he's quarter-orc, quarter-draenei.Half-elves can't be too uncommon, or Kalec would make a really bad disguise.

Don't forget that there's the other half-orc/half-draenei out in Nagrand. I forget his name but he's in that Ogre camp on the eastern edge and sends you all over the place framing the bag guys for your ogre slaughter.

@BoobahWhile that *is* a commonly used definition in our world of what being a "species" entails, it seems to be impossible that orcs, draenei and humans are of the same species. They all originated from different planets. Orcs from Draenor, Draenei from Argus and Humans on Azeroth. Of course, since there seems to be a lot of planets who shared common progenitors (the Titans) who altered and seeded life on verious worlds throughout the universe, it may be that their genetic manipulation left speciies they encourntered able to breed with one another. While the definition of "species" that we currently use is suitable for our purposes, I believe that if we found alien life and were miraculously able to cross-breed with it, even we would redefine what being a seperate "species" was so that it couldn't include members of two groups that eveloved on seperate planets.

You know, seeing Garona Halforcen and half orc in the same sentence made me notice... HALF-ORC-en. Icwutudid there, blizzard. Bravo. I'm probably way behind on the times.

Rhonin and Vereesa and their half-elven twin sons, and Turalyon and Alleria Windrunner and their temporally anomalous half-elf paladin son Arathor way "hi," too. It's basically been established that the following races can definitely interbreed:Humans and elves.Orcs and ogres.Orcs and draenei.Humans and orc/draenei hybrids which sort of implies that orcs and humans and humans and draenei are not entirely out of the biological question. As to numbers...? The Mok'Nathal clan of half-orc/half-ogres was, at one point, much larger than it is now, having dwindled away due to a number of issues. The commonality of half-elves is a frequent and hotly debated topic -- some roleplayers allege a massive institutional prejudice against half-elves that is nowhere evidenced in legitimate Lore sources beyond Rhonin's whinypants internal narration at the beginning of the War of the Ancients trilogy, a prejudice that keeps their numbers low. (Your humble authoress suspects a holdover attitude from Krynn awkwardly imported to Azeroth and generally ignored thereafter.) One suspects that places where large quel'dorei expatriate communities exist (i.e., Stormwind) or where the quel'dorei/sin'dorei helped found the community/still maintain a presence (i.e., Dalaran), the numbers of half-elves are much higher, as are the numbers of people who possess distant elven ancestors. There are at least two orc-draenei hybrids in Lore -- Garona Halforcen and Lantresor of the Blade -- and the background of both implies that there were once more, though the majority have been killed, possibly deliberately purged.

Exactly what DOES Arator redeem? Coupons?
10-07-2011 @ 11:56AM
literaltruth, technically even humans aren't from Azeroth. Humans descend from Vrykul who descend from Iron Vrykul, who are Titan creations. So the humans are from wherever the Titans are from, same as dwarves and gnomes, even though I suppose all 3 were technically created on Azeroth so it's up to you if you decide humans count as Azerothian or not.
10-07-2011 @ 12:18PM
That probably depends on whether you'd consider robots "Earthlings".
10-07-2011 @ 1:03PM
assuming that night elves descend from trolls, i bet we can say trolls are available aswellSoo what do we get if a gnome and dwarf mate? i guess a double dwarf?
10-07-2011 @ 2:43PM
I just had a thought...Does it strike anyone else as odd how the Windrunner sisters all fell for humans?I mean Alleria has Turalyon, Vereesa has Rhonin, and Sylvanas has the entire undead nation of Lordaeron (or to a lesser extent Apothecary Lydon because there is totally something there.)

Half-gronn, half-gnome, patrolling Blade's Edge Mountains. Make it happen, Blizz.
