Blizzard introduces tradable "Guardian Cub" companion pet, purchasable through the Blizzard Store
Blizzard has just announced a companion pet called the Guardian Cub that you can purchase through the Blizzard store. Unlike previous pets, this companion pet will be a one-time-only use item and will not be Bind on Account. Additionally, this pet will be able to be traded to other players for gold.
Yes, you heard that right.
The pet will cost $10, and you can trade it to other people in game for whatever in-game currency or items you want.

Guardian Cub FAQ
Q: How does the Guardian Cub pet work? How is it different from other Pet Store pets?
Unlike the other Pet Store companions, the Guardian Cub is a tradable, one-time-use pet that permanently binds to a single character upon use. When you purchase the Guardian Cub from the online store, the character you designate will receive a bind-on-use item to carry in his or her inventory. You can either use the item yourself to permanently add the pet to your character's collection (consuming the item in the process), or -- after a brief initial cooldown period -- you can trade the item to another player so he or she can add it to one of their character's collections. Note that once the pet has been added to a character's Companions list, it can no longer be traded, so make sure you're giving the cub a happy home.
Q: Will I be able to carry more than one Guardian Cub at a time?
While a character can only have one Guardian Cub in his or her Companions list, you can have as many in your inventory as you like. Please note that Guardian Cub items do not stack, so each one will take up a bag or bank slot.
Q: How much will the Guardian Cub cost in the Pet Store?
The Guardian Cub will be priced the same as the other Pet Store pets ($10 USD). All sales of the Guardian Cub are final -- no refunds will be given once a purchase is made.
Q: Why did you decide to make the Guardian Cub tradable?
Since the introduction of the Pet Store, many players have been asking for ways to get the companions we offer there without having to spend real-world cash. By making the Guardian Cub tradable (much like the BoE mounts from the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game), players interested in the new pet will have fun, alternative in-game ways to get one. In addition to trading the pet, players can give the Guardian Cub as a gift to another character for a special occasion; guild leaders can use them to reward members for a job well done; and so on. We also hope this change will help reduce the number of incidents of scamming via trading for invalid pet codes.
Q: Could I put the Guardian Cub up on the auction house to try to make some gold if I wanted to?
While our goal is to offer players alternative ways to add a Pet Store pet to their collection, we're ok with it if some players choose to use the Guardian Cub as a safe and secure way to try to acquire a little extra in-game gold without turning to third-party gold-selling services. However, please keep in mind that there's never any guarantee that someone will purchase what you put up for sale in the auction house, or how much they'll pay for it. Also, it's important to note that we take a firm stance against buying gold from outside sources because in most cases, the gold these companies offer has been stolen from compromised accounts. (You can read more about our stance here.) While some players might be able to acquire some extra gold by putting the Guardian Cub in the auction house, that's preferable to players contributing to the gold-selling "black market" and account theft.
Q: Are you changing the other available Pet Store pets (e.g. Lil' Ragnaros, the Pandaren Monk) to work this way?
No, the other available Pet Store pets will continue to work as they always have.
Q: What about future Pet Store pets?
It's too early to say how we'll handle future Pet Store pets. We made this change in response to feedback from players looking for alternate ways to get the Pet Store pets, and we're always looking into other opportunities for improvement. We're interested in hearing what players think of the Guardian Cub when it launches, and we hope you'll have fun with this new flying friend.

This seems like it might be a way for Blizz to introduce another gold sink without it seeming like one.
They have to know many players will post it at exorbitant prices, but since it will be the players setting the price with no baseline set from Blizz (i.e. vendor mats at several k), they won't have to deal with players complaining about it not being available to everyone. After all, they can just say if you don't want to pay 50k, you can purchase it with money like any other Blizzard store pet.

Yeah, I'd like to see both the Goldcapped and the Lawbringer takes on this. Seems like they managed to avoid the concern of taxes and the value of gold as real money by doing this indirectly -- but not having a law background I might be wrong here.

@Umbralwrath:
This may be a lot of things, but a gold sink, it isn't.
For it to be a gold sink, it would need to be taking gold out of the economy; in this case, it's just getting passed around from one player to another.
If it's sold on the auction house, there's the cut to act as a little of a sink, but no more so than it does for anything else on the AH, and I don't see this being a really bulk item; there's likely to only be a handful on the AH at a time; not enough to really take any significant amount out.

In lieu of writing the most massivest wall of econ-flavored text this site has ever seen, I'll just send you an email, Basil :P

Another consideration: Doesn't this mean that every realm (and perhaps even faction) will have their own exchange rate? As it stands, prices on in-game items can vary widely from realm to realm and even between horde and alliance; that means that a $10 pet will get you a different amount of gold, depending on where you want it.
I wonder what that will mean, overall... Will you get more or less gold for your $10 on a PvE or PvP realm? How about RP and not? Will low population servers or high population servers give you more for your money?
Man, there's a lot to consider here. I have a feeling you're going to be writing more than one column on this before it's over, Basil.

The most recent gold ads I've seen in-game have been something like $16 for 10k gold. But this is, of course, against the ToS...
Personally, I'd drop 10k for this $10 pet in a heartbeat - which is a great deal compared to the gold sellers.
But... Current in-game BoE pets are already on the AH for 10-20k. (Oozeling, whelps and hatchlings). I think this sets it up for those buying the pet for resale to expect (and demand) 15-20k for the new pet. And... I'd probably bite just cause there's no other legal way to ditch my gold.
However, I'd really hate to see the value of gold devalued to this. Mainly because I'm still in the market for several TCG mounts... I've gotten a couple mounts recently at roughly the $1 to 1k conversion rate, and I've been happy with those trades, but if this pet swings the value to $1 to 2k, then I pray it just stays with the pet and doesn't affect the TCG mount market.

To me, this seems like a sort of trial run for the real money auction house coming in D3. Sure, this isn't nearly as big as that seems like it's going to be, but I think Blizz will be gauging how players react to this, how much we're willing to sell/buy, the $ to gold "exchange rate", etc. It'll be interesting to see how this shapes the D3 auction house, if at all (again, this is just my opinion).

Now he'll definitely not read my email. :(
Umbralwrath Oct 10th 2011 2:06PM
I probably should have been more specific.
It won't be a traditional gold sink in the sense of, say, the Traveler's mammoth, but I do think it could work as one on subtle level. The AH cut might not be substaniel, but on a high price item over multiple transactions it can add up.
The people most likely to spend gold on them will be the people with some gold to burn (though perhaps not many AH Goblins as they can be notoriously stingy).
Those who can't afford the auction house prices or those who can afford it but consider it to not be worth it still have the recourse of purchasing it directly from Blizz for real money.
Combined with void storage, I think it could be a small scale way to help leech out some of the inflation, though as with the normal gold sinks it's probably going to draw more funds from the semi-casual gold maker then the serious AH PvP'er.
Just my opinion on one small aspect of it.

This is a bad sign: my outline for the piece is 400 words, and the article is supposed to clock in at around 1000 :\

Legal Gold Buying ? :(

Its a take on EvE's Plex/ISK system which allows 1 player to pay another player's subscription fee for in-game currency.
Dont worry too much The bottom line for EvE is that it works.
Grovinofdarkhour Oct 10th 2011 1:57PM
In a way. But honestly, since you don't know for sure in advance how much gold you'll get for your $10, there's an element of gambling involved, too.
The theoretical 2-transaction cycle is so nuanced, though, I find it hard to view it as anything but a test balloon. The dollars they get from this won't be nearly as important as the information the experiment provides.
Skarn Oct 10th 2011 2:05PM
The extremely significant difference is that Blizzard is NOT selling gold. Yes, they are selling an item that essential equates to "buying gold," but it is not actual gold. The difference is important because Blizzard selling gold itself would lead to quite a bit of inflation. That would create brand new, easy-to-get gold and pump it into the economy. The pet method does not create new gold, it only trades already existing gold.
So it offers the option of "buying" gold, but without the main inflation danger. Interesting.

Uh oh.
The OMG GOLD SELLING QQ is gonna be fun to read, to say the least.
Tirrimas Oct 10th 2011 12:24PM
In before "slippery slope" hyperventilating.
I'm all for it. I won't be buying it (lack of funds and OMGMUSTHAVEITONALLALTS), but hey - others will and it supports the game we all love.
Hillazon Oct 10th 2011 12:25PM
Cute lil' pet that costs $20, but you can only use on one character? Not BoA like everything else?
I think I'll pass.
Hillazon Oct 10th 2011 12:26PM
$10. whatever.
