Its a take on EvE's Plex/ISK system which allows 1 player to pay another player's subscription fee for in-game currency. Dont worry too much The bottom line for EvE is that it works.

In a way. But honestly, since you don't know for sure in advance how much gold you'll get for your $10, there's an element of gambling involved, too.The theoretical 2-transaction cycle is so nuanced, though, I find it hard to view it as anything but a test balloon. The dollars they get from this won't be nearly as important as the information the experiment provides.

The extremely significant difference is that Blizzard is NOT selling gold. Yes, they are selling an item that essential equates to "buying gold," but it is not actual gold. The difference is important because Blizzard selling gold itself would lead to quite a bit of inflation. That would create brand new, easy-to-get gold and pump it into the economy. The pet method does not create new gold, it only trades already existing gold.So it offers the option of "buying" gold, but without the main inflation danger. Interesting.
