I think this is clearly an attempt by Blizzard to gauge the community reaction to gold selling in WoW. The entire BOE aspect versus the BOA of previous pets/mounts is a clever way to do this versus the model that will be used in Diablo III. I do find it curious how Blizzard had said there were "no plans" to bring the real cash AH to WoW and now this new pet shows up. I don't think this is a coincidence.
I think it is clear that WoW is winding down and so trying new things with it at this point is not outragious or really that damaging to Blizzard. Their numbers are likely to continuing to go down and when Star Wars comes out and Diablo next year, it will only increase... so why not give this a shot now?
