In wow? No. But I have seen it in Ars Magica. There are three types of characters in the game, Mages, Companions and Grogs. Each player has a Mage and a companion, but every player plays the grogs as a communal RP element in the story. Mages are the movers and shakers in the game. Companions are basically more heroic normal people and grogs are all the peons/commoners. Grogs are the ones that keep the covenant running.

Ars Magica is my favorite game and has the best magic system:
