Deathwing attacked Stormwind on the PTR
It appears that the version of Deathwing spawned is the current one that flies around Azeroth and burns zones to the ground, killing all NPCs, mobs, and players. We can even see the player in the video get the Achievement "Stood in the Fire." There is no indication this is the version of Deathwing that will spawn in the raids. We didn't see any players on his back, which is something we know will be possible during the fight.
We believe the video and reports are credible. And while it happened on the PTR, there is little possibility of this happening on the live realms. "Fly around and randomly destroy zones" Deathwing doesn't hit the cities, and GMs rarely, if ever, make themselves known on the live realms. However on the PTR, as the video above shows, things are completely different.
Thanks to WoWCynwise and NDMiko for the Twitter tip and video.

then maybe I will get my Stood in the Fire achievement then, levelling several alts and archaeology on several toons didn't do the trick, not one of my chars has that achievement.
Skarlette Oct 16th 2011 3:26PM
Yeah, I've leveled some alts and spent more hours than I really care to estimate doing archaeology on my main, and I've never seen ol' D.W. It makes me a very sad achievement hunter/fangirl/admirerer of fiery explodeyness.

I ran into Deathwing on three of my characters. One was in SW just as Cat was released. It's very shocking during the first seconds when you can't figure out what the heck is happening. lmao. Very entertaining.

I've only been roasted on one of my many toons. I'm an alt-a-holic and travel extensively through the old world. I got torched while questing in a cave in Arathi Highlands. hehe.

That's gonna get annoying
jfofla Oct 16th 2011 3:28PM
Everything, EVERYTHING, annoys WOW players. So nothing new.

Also, it's just PTR.

and you're still going to keep paying your monthly fee.
Nathanyel Oct 16th 2011 11:07AM
Well the devs like to play around on the PTR. Shouldn't have that much significance though, it was just a place with many players :P
Revynn Oct 16th 2011 11:07AM
I really hope they do this on live.
MusedMoose Oct 16th 2011 12:08PM
Seconded. ^_^ People wondered why Deathwing didn't attack the main cities... he's got plenty of reason to do it now!
Though it would be hilarious if he hit, say, the Exodar and someone posted in Trade about how they're the only person in that city and still got burned. ...yes, I know there's usually more than just one person in the Exodar, but still...

THIS THIS THIS!!!
I loved the Zombie invasion. I loved the Elemental attacks. It's time WoW started giving us personal reasons to get involved with the storylines -- that the enemies are attacking US and making OUR LIVES worse. Please Blizz, oh PLEASE, let DW attack the cities. PLEASE.
ravyncat Oct 16th 2011 12:44PM
I would love if he torched all the capital cities.
Deathwing has not seemed like a threat at all to me. I have seen him all of twice this entire expansion and it was on the same character. That is even with playing multiple alts and running all over Azeroth leveling in every new-old zone.
So...yeah. I know why he is a big bad, but from my character's point of view they have never seen him. As far as they know there was just terrible earthquakes etc. all over the world and people just blamed it on a giant dragon. They feel no sense of danger from him at all.
That would change if he started taking out major cities.
Abbadon Oct 16th 2011 12:52PM
I do as well... Mainly cause I still don't have the achievement! Would be nice to just go AFK in Org for hours on end knowing that it was gonna get hit at some point (rather than the very randomness of the zones that get hit currently).
Chivvy Oct 16th 2011 2:19PM
I can imagine:
Most capital cities: ARGH GOD IT'S SO HORRIBLE, I'M BURNING, WHY WON'T IT STOP?
IF/Undercity: Fire? What fire?

@Aruhgulah
The zombie invasion is the reason I permanently cancelled my second WoW account and spent 6 months away from the game, and even after I returned I never again played just WoW. I don't entrust my fun to developers that think forcing a very different gameplay on players - whether they like it or not - is a good idea.
The elemental invasions were not as bad because players could just opt out of them by going to one of the unaffected cities. But their static nature meant they were either too easy (when there were more players than required) or downright impossible (when there were less players), and participation quickly dried - a couple days after they were available there was almost no one doing them. Blizzard should have either made them scale from party size to multiple raid size, or else bitten the bullet and implemented them as a queuable instance, with the benefits from beating them available as a buff only participating players got.
A few DW attacks on SW and Org - perhaps roughly one per week - would not be that bad, though.

Look at this morose mother fucker right here. Sounds like someone shit in his cereal.
ravyncat Oct 16th 2011 5:10PM
As I see it, he/she has just as much right to say why they don't want DW torching cities as other people have to say they do want it.
There is no reason to disagree so much that it turns into a personal sounding attack.
Natsumi Oct 16th 2011 11:37PM
Wait, are you sure it was DW and not Negaduck?
