Smart move, I sure hope it's not to hide a lack of content and ideas in the upcoming expac.

Probably not quite the reason. If the reason behind this is a lack of planned content, It's more likely for the time between 4.3 and 5.0, which I'd hazard a guess to be about one year long.

What's more likely, though, is this is just them trying to eliminate profit loss whenever people take a break from WoW.

I'd say Drack is on the right track. It's like, "go ahead and take a break from WoW and play Diablo III instead".

Not a bad deal for a subscription you were paying for anyway.
