They are (awful pun alert) panda-ing to the desires of some of the least vocal but most numerous of the player base, the fanatical pet collectors.

I've never been into that stuff (well, I have a selection of hunter pets, but they have uses in game), but loads of people I know are all about amassing vast collections of otherwise useless mini-pets, and now there's something to do with 'em!

This is a genius move.
