From everything I've seen, it feels like Cataclysm was just a bandaid.
This time around they're performing full-on surgery.
It seems a bit more simplified, but also far more rewarding. Less choices overall, but more important choices. No talent trees, but the specs are more clearly defined than ever...

In reality it's really not less choices... most specs had very little real choice to start with =P

The funny thing is, I felt the same way when Cata's Great Talent Tree Butchering happened.
I hope the new talent system doesn't make me feel like I'm stuck at the same level until I get a new talent point.

This looks like it will be very challenging to balance. Very interesting. Either way, I don't think this comes out anywhere close to summer. Not saying I want them to rush it. Just looks like a ton of new stuff to implement.

Agree completely! They had a lot to do with Cataclysm. They have fully admitted the talent system overhaul didn't end things up where they would have liked. The big thing about Cataclysm, I felt is redoing 1-60; that's freaking HUGE!
Now we're taking all we've learned from the current expansion and just improve, improve, improve.
I am quite excite right now.

It would be nice if we really could get away with not having a "best" spec but this is still a video game. There will always be people who do the hardcore math to find the "most damaging" build out there. The most that developers can hope for is having the differences be so minor that if you are different that you won't be an inconvenience for a group.

My first thought was "six choices will be disappointing and boring" but seeing how they plan to do, it's best not to even think about them as talents. Talents were (on an individual basis) tiny tweaks to your class that all combined to increase your power a lot. But 80-90% of those tweaks were mandatory to maximize your class.
Now, there will be many fewer talents, but every single one might be a big change to gameplay. Which means re-speccing will no longer be about a small tweak to achieve a mathematical benefit that you only see in careful parsing but rather a significant change to how you play your class...whole new abilities.
That could actually prove to be a lot more fun and interesting and make choices meaningful, even if fewer.
