Blizzard discusses Gold Selling and the Guardian Cub

The complete text of the Blizzard post which you can find here will be posted behind the cut. It's an interesting way to approach the lost time and stress of account hacking.
We'd like to thank everyone who's provided feedback or questions on the Guardian Cub announcement and how allowing it to be traded relates to our stance against gold selling. Our hope today is to discuss our desire for a more secure and enjoyable game environment, and provide some clarity on how the Guardian Cub fits into that goal in its own small way.
To begin with, we need to reiterate what we know are the facts of third-party gold sales, and how they impact World of Warcraft players. We've been hard at work for years now thwarting gold farming tactics, and we know that only a very small percentage of gold is actually "farmed" these days. The vast majority of gold that third parties sell to players is obtained through account compromises. Your friend, guild mate, or family member who had their account hacked was specifically targeted for their gold so that it could be turned around and sold to another player looking to buy some.
Having your account compromised is one of the most negative experiences a player can have, and dealing with hacked accounts makes up a significant portion of customer support time on a day-to-day basis. These issues have serious and far-reaching consequences on our ability to continue delivering epic game experiences and high-quality support for our players.
We've gone to great lengths to educate, inform, and provide increased account security for players through devices like the mobile and physical Battle.net Authenticator. We provide fun incentives for people to use those devices, and we continue to increase our efforts to educate players, block countless phishing and scamming attempts, improve our detection methods to stop account compromises before they begin, and take a harsher stance on third-party gold buying itself.
With all that in mind, we come to the new tradable Guardian Cub pet. By letting players trade this pet, we're giving those who want to participate in the Pet Store without spending real money a way to buy the pet with gold instead. This also means that players can buy one for the purpose of trying to sell it in-game, creating the potential for players to exchange real money for gold in a way that does not lead to account compromises. Of course, all that comes with the pretty important caveat that demand for the pet will be finite, and there's no guarantee you'll be able to find a buyer.
While this one little pet can never come close to "solving" the above issues with third-party gold selling and account compromises, it may help us determine whether we're able address these ongoing problems in a safe, creative way that ultimately has a positive impact on the game experience overall. Our hope is that through all of our increased efforts we can make World of Warcraft a safer, more secure, and more enjoyable game for all of our players.

This makes a lot more sense given the announcement of the Pet Combat system.

And the fact that this was posted by Blizzard about a week ago, yet only reported here after the announcement of the pet combat system seems rather suspicious...

Curious to see how much they sell for on the AH.
Is there anything to stop a gold selling company using a free account to sell them too though?
Oreet Oct 22nd 2011 11:48AM
Could be mistaken, but I thought that Blizz said there'd be a "cooldown" after each pet purchase from the store.
Plus, can trial/free accounts even buy game items from the Blizzard Store? I know when I bought pets, and game time through the Blizzard store, I had to sign in with my Battle.net account/authenticator, so they could easily set the store to not allow trial/free accounts from buying in-game items.

The thing is, before hand people were predicting this going for a couple thousand gold, maybe. However, if they are going to be included in the pet battle system, they could potentially go for much more, if they're high level and have some desirable abilities.
dorondadruid Oct 22nd 2011 11:58AM
Even if Trial Accounts could buy the item, they cannot post auctions or trade them between players.
Onyxis Oct 22nd 2011 11:58AM
Free accounts don't have access to the AH if I'm not mistaken, precisely for this sort of reason.
Eldoron Oct 22nd 2011 12:00PM
AFAIK free accounts cannot trade, nor can use the AH. Secondly, they probably look for more secure sources of money than this... AH will probably be flooded with it, making the price really low.

Free and trial accounts also don't have access to the mail.

Gold sellers wouldn't buy guardian cubs; it's the equivalent of gold buying:
real money --> guardian cub --> gold == real money --> gold
There is (and hopefully never will be) a legit way for a player to sell in-game gold or items for real money.

On my main realm, I have 8 max-level Alliance characters and 2 leveling Horde characters. Gold is definitely more challenging on the Horde side, but not overwhelmingly so. Not having epic flight is annoying for the 84, but I will get there eventually. I wish people would understand that making gold is part of the game and quit trying so hard to find shortcuts. Personally, I think this will help but the demand is going to be trending down quickly.
Everclear Oct 22nd 2011 11:42AM
People are still complaining about this?
Negatron Oct 22nd 2011 3:36PM
Exactly, I never understood the initial fuss to begin with...
jordan Oct 22nd 2011 11:43AM
speaking of which, I wonder how account wide pets will be handled once you can level and trade pets instead of learning them.
bethontheharbor Oct 22nd 2011 12:18PM
and let us not forget that with the new pet battle system (PokeWow) next expansion all pets will be trade-able and sell-able. That's what this is the first step towards.
Ian Oct 22nd 2011 12:59PM
Still they are refusing to answer one question.
How is that fair on those who purchase the pet with real money for their own use.
It is for a single character instead of the entire account yet costs just as much.
CallMeIrd Oct 22nd 2011 2:11PM
Exactly. I've been waiting for them to address this, but they respond to the whole gold selling angle over and over.
Negatron Oct 22nd 2011 3:41PM
Simple, whichever toon is your pet addict, buy it for that character. If you have multiple alts where you would like to have every pet imaginable then that is your issue.
Scunosi Oct 22nd 2011 4:06PM
Did you maybe miss the big announcement yesterday? Had to do with pets being made account-wide? Still not sure on how you'll have account-wide pets that can also be traded away to others (maybe it's sorta like BoE vs. BoP) but with that announcement this is now a non-issue.
Cluisanna Oct 22nd 2011 4:49PM
They said at BlizzCon that pets will become account-wide, so I guess that solves that! (I really, really hope I didn't misunderstand that.)
