BlizzCon 2011: Heroic Scholomance and Scarlet Monastery redesign

With the announcement of the new expansion, Mists of Pandaria, there was a very exciting announcement that we will be receiving three new heroic dungeons as redesigns. These rediscovered zones are Scholomance and Scarlet Monastery. Both are iconic instances and most players have some fond (or not so fond) memories there.. During the Dungeon and Raids panel we received a few bits of information about each of these revamps. Join us after the break for details.
Scarlet Monastery
The Monastery has long since been a part of the game, housing the members of the scarlet crusade since the days of Vanilla WoW. The zon e is currently comprised of four separate zones, the graveyard, the armory, the library and the cathedral. Each covers various player levels with the graveyard being the lowest, to the cathedral which is the highest. The instances have also been the home of some NPCs that have been entwined with the games lore from the beginning like High Inquisitor Whitemane and Commander Mograine, and has been a staple of the world for many years.
When the new expansion hits, the entire zone will be redesigned and repackaged. The first change (and likely most notable) is that the four wings of Scarlet Monastery will be remixed and combined down into two. The graveyard and the cathedral will be one of them. Players will start out in the graveyard with Bloodmage Thalnos as their first boss before moving on to the cathedral proper, where they'll encounter a brand new addition to the dungeon. The developers at Blizzard stated that they felt like the gardens before the cathedral was just a giant space with a ton of trash, and that putting a boss there felt like a good use of space. The armory and the library will also be combined into one zone, and while the feel of the zone as well as various NPCs will be preserved, there has been a lot of trash and rooms removed as it was felt that it took away from the focus of the zone.
Ultimately players seemed to react well to the proposed changes and the developers seemed very excited about them as well. The way each of the zone maps looked, it seemed to keep the feel of the original zones, but made them much more streamlined.
Scholomance
Another location with a solid spot in the history of Azeroth, Scholomance, is getting some much needed love in the next expansion. The first change that players will notice is that there will be a boss as soon as you enter into the instance in the very first room. This is important to the developers because they felt that the first room not only was underutilized and could easily have been a place for a boss from the beginning, but it is a space that players largely ignored in favor of using the side door. By placing a boss in the first room, it was said that they hope to properly utilize the space, and sort of set the tone for the instance. At the time of the panel it was said that this first boss would be Ras Frostwhisper, giving players a very interesting fight to start things out with.
Many of the rooms have been removed, giving the instance a much more linear feel than before. It was a concern that players got lost in the original version of the instance, and the revamp was the perfect opportunity to shuffle things around. Some bosses have been relocated entirely, which is the case with Rattlegore who has been moved from the basement of the zone to the same level as the other bosses, but into his own room. It was stated that all of the original NPCs would be here as well in one form or another, and the bosses and events should for the most part be preserved, if streamlined. The moving of the rooms into a more logical layout makes sense for the zone, and will help players who are unfamiliar with it in the original format navigate it with ease.
Design Philosophy and closing thoughts
Most important of all these changes is the fact that they are being done to make sure the dungeons follow the design philosophy of the development team. First thing that was mentioned was focus. They felt that certain instances such as the Halls of Origination and even the new Deadmines got away from them. While they were fun, they had a lot of bosses, a lot of trash, and just took forever to complete. They stated that they wanted to bring the dungeons back down to the point where you had time to run one or two of them a night while still having the time to enjoy other aspects of the game. You can certainly see how they intend to do this with these two iconic dungeons by simple virtue of removing rooms all together and paring down the rest.
They also wanted to take the opportunity to revamp boss abilities while staying true to the original flavor of the zones. Bosses like Ras Frostwhisper will likely have a new set of tricks for players to encounter when they engage him for the first time. The idea is an important one, and while details aren't available yet on what type of mechanic or ability changes we can expect in the zones bosses, we will all be eagerly awaiting more information. Personally, I feel that the changes will add enough freshness to the zones for players both old and new to have fun discovering and re-discovering these amazing dungeons.

It can't be worse than the voice-casting for Chrono-Lord Epoch. That has to be the single worst casting in gaming history.
Coming to think of it, I wonder when the voice cast of WOW will exceed 10 people? Maybe it already has, but it sure doesn't feel like it! All dwarves sound exactly the same and Dragha Shadowburner and Valiona is another example of piss-poor casting... same actor for both voices? Really?

@PeeWee: Uhh, Sindragosa says "Hello".

So you're saying that the art director of Warcraft is a moron? I dare you to tell that to Samwise face to face.

Realistically, your comments will have an impact if you go to the official forums. I guess that isn't really an option if you've cancelled your account, but you can still e-mail the company. As you;re quick to point out ~ they listen to consumer feedback.
Venting on a third-party website may be cathartic, but most people come here because they're excited about the game and the expansion. They're not interested in your QQ, and even if they were - they can't do anything about it. Only Blizzard can. Name-calling doesn't endear anyone to your opinion, either.
Best wishes with your new games. You might try Warhammer: Age of Reckoning. It's pretty fun; also, there's an MMO for Warhammer 40K in the works. No idea when it will be ready, but I have to admit I'm looking forward to it, in addition to Pandaria.

Imagine how stupid that would be that someone is threatening to quit WOW because they hate Vikings. LIVE WITH IT. Azeroth is a world come to life and Pandaria is just a logical next step on our way to level 90 and is another mythical land to run through. Anyone who say something stupid like "I hate Chinese" in my WOW are nothing more than a bleeping racist. If Taurens were introduced in the next expac, you'll probably be singing the same tune as well with "I hate native americans in my WOW" If you can't even accept Azeroth for what it is, then this isn't the game for you.

This is technically called "The" Scholomance, isn't it?
Iirdan Oct 22nd 2011 7:06PM
Nope, Scholomance.

There are sort of two categories of dungeons in WoW.
The first are the amusement park rides- linear instances that have fun fights. These are great for people that just want their gear and vps. These are designed with the experience and flow in mind first. Pretty much every dungeon in wrath and cataclysm was designed with way.
The second are delves. They're non-linear exploratory experiences and a pain in the ass for the grind. They're designed from the concept-up. I loved running those with friends and family. Sometimes with pugs, but only if they were easy. They haven't really had one of those since vanilla, or maybe Karazhan. Blackrock depths and Stratholme are two that still fit into that category.
I love category two, but I suppose it's not a good use of development time to create them. Nowadays, I can go back and run old raids if I want that experience.
These revamps are good things. Any bets on what the first revamped revamped dungeon's gonna be? (heroic heroic deadmines at 95?) On another note, they should absolutely design this new challenge system to scale dungeons up to higher levels for future expansions. Or let you elvel down...
Bellajtok Oct 22nd 2011 6:46PM
Well stated. It's definitely true, and it's very apparent in the way you can go through dungeons.
ElrithCC Oct 22nd 2011 6:40PM
Hey, child. The people who've been requesting Pandaren have been following WOW since before it came out. How long have you been playing?
madfigs Oct 22nd 2011 6:41PM
"The world may not be black and white, but Mists of Pandariaâ„¢ sure is!"
New slogan for 5.0???
Shrikesnest Oct 22nd 2011 6:47PM
Take your QQ bullshit and GET OUT.
I have absolutely had it with this crap. Okay, we get it. Some of you really, really hate the new expansion. Like, for reals. We don't need to hear about it on EVERY. MOTHERSLAPPING. POST. We all heard you the first time. None of us cared then. None of us care now. If you're leaving, then just freaking go already, and take your racist bellowing with you.
Some people have real, substantive worries or disagreements with the new expansion and their actual, useful arguments are getting drowned out by you loudmouthed brats and your bitching about how much you hate China, or how you won't play anything that isn't soaked in blood and covered in spikes. A vast majority of the MMOs on the market pander to you. Frankly, you can have them, because most of them suck. But if you don't like Warcraft anymore, goodbye. Go. Don't hang around here whining constantly all day.
You guys have the unique aroma of Eric Cartman about you and your worthless opinions. The people downvoting you aren't so much fanboys as well-adjusted human beings. I, however, cannot count myself amongst their number right now because I am absolutely at the end of my rope. SHUT. THE FUCK. UP.
Awesome Oct 22nd 2011 6:54PM
While its awesome that the Scarlet Crusade dungeons are returning (I have a lot of fond memories of those place when I first started running them, mainly that I was foolish enough to believe that the Scarlet Monastery dungeon had 4 different versions lol) and while I approve of the extra bosses and new layout and whatever, I find it odd that they're condensing the size of the dungeons. The fact that they were so large gave them a grand feel and a sense of progression whenever one got past a boss.
Aruhgulah Oct 22nd 2011 6:54PM
I LIKE the re-vamps and heroic modes. It's a way of allowing us to re-visit the old content and keeping it relevant at the higher levels. Now if only Blizz could work out a way for mobs' levels to change based on the level of the player fighting them...that would REALLY keep it relevant for us as we progress.

Pandas are awesome. Asian scenery is awesome. Pet Battles are awesome.
Playing as a monk is awesome.
WoW will lose some subs. Definitely, and the ones who just sit and QQ about the "death of wow" are the ones to go. We wish you all the best and we hope you keep to your word that you will not be playing WoW anymore. The community on WoW is something that will hopefully improve this xpac and that is awesome.
I think blizzard went the right way. People have wanted pandarens in the game for a very long time and they are finally here.
Can't all be rogues and death knights ya know. WoW isn't a console game. Its an MMO open to everyone and everyone has a choice in their playstyle and the character they want to play, whether its doom or gloom rip your guts out or fun and cute little ass kickers. Just cause YOU dont like it doesn't mean that everyone will leave wow.
If anything, I think a lot more people will join wow because of this. Its a beautiful xpac so far and adds in a lot to the game that just wasn't there before.
Bye!! How about leaving wow related sites too.

so, uh... need a Xanax, bro?

On a serious note here, from a Lore point, I wonder what the Undead will be doing... whether it will be proclaiming their loyalty and actions for the Lich King (Bolvar now if he is good, so it wouldn't make sense for him to create them as a menace...) or whether they have been detached from the LK control and are now fending for themselves. Interesting options here. Please note, I havenot played throughthe new 1-60,so haven't felt anyof the Undead repercussions after Northrend.
Boobah Oct 22nd 2011 7:40PM
Well, from what we can tell (from quests in the plaguelands), Bolvar may be holding back the mindless undead, but hasn't done anything about the self-willed kind. Which apparently means the Scholomance is still going strong on its own, and there's apparently some old Scourge operators still causing the Argent Crusade problems in the eastern plaguelands; it's not clear if they're at all associated with the Scholomance crew of if they're independents..
And, of course, then there's still the Val'kyr who signed up with Sylvanas...

Please stop posting on here and just leave. Sorry, just "bloody" leave.

Bye, asshole, see you in line when it comes out.
