First off, although Blizzard's implementation is definitely inspired most heavily by Pokemon, Nintendo and Pokemon did not invent the "monster training and raising" genre.
That honor can be traced all the way back to Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Story, released in the mid-80s. If you're familiar with Shin Megami Tensei or Persona, that's the game that started it all. It was a very P&P-style game, in which you roamed dungeons and encountered demons that you could recruit as summonable allies.
And Pokemon itself was an attempt to tap into the extremely popular "insect collecting" hobby in Japan, which is actually a fairly large industry over there.
