BlizzCon 2011: Early monk abilities and the dark side of the force

This is how it works. The basics are very similar to playing a rogue except that there is (currently) no auto-attack. You have a bar of chi that mimics the rogue energy bar. You also have a bar with slots for four light orbs and four dark orbs. The basic level 1 attack, Jab, consumes 40 chi (out of 100) with every shot and grants you both a light orb and a dark orb.
Also at level 1, you get an attack that consumes one light orb that does twice the damage of Jab. If the target is over 50% health, it inflicts three times the damage of Jab. At level 2, you get a kick that inflicts three times the damage of Jab and consumes two dark orbs but returns one if the kick kills the opponent.
So your basic attack sequence becomes: Jab a few times to build up orbs and spend chi, then use the light orb attack while the mob is over 50% health, then one or two dark side kicks to finish them off. Another variation is build up orbs using Jab on an easy opponent, then approach a new enemy and unleash your high-damage, orb-only attacks one after another. The mob will drop like a rock.
Level 3 grants you a fast, forward roll ability which is great for getting to the mob faster, though it will cost you chi. Level 5 grants you a flying kick attack similar to feral druid Pounce including the stun component. So now you can close with enemies quickly and stun them for a few seconds, allowing you to use Jab to build up orbs. By the time the stun wears off, you should have enough orbs to unleash your higher-damage attacks. The flying kick ability costs no chi but is on a 30-second cooldown.
Some people have been concerned about no auto-attack in all this, but I barely noticed. By the time multiple Jabs drained your chi, you have plenty of orbs for high-damage attacks. When you run out of those, your chi will have regenerated.
Though I only got to level 5, I found the class fun to play and look forward to seeing what other abilities the monk gets at higher levels. For more on the Pandaria new player experience, check out Joe Perez's impressions from Friday.

You link to an NPC Pounce ability :P The Cat's Pounce http://www.wowhead.com/spell=9005 has no leap, just a stun and a DoT.

I'm really interested in playing a monk, I had my guesses it might be coming and the monk class in RPGs in general is usually pretty awesome so yup!
My only concern (albeit a silly one) is the DK syndrome. I did roll a DK when Wrath hit, mainly because I'd been playing my druid since vanilla, at all 3 roles and wanted to try out something clad in plate with large weapons. I loved it. The only problem was the rep they gained and the amount of people doing the same.
I'm sure that issue will be solved with time when the newness wears off but still, a silly thing at the back of my head.

Personally, I expect to see the first thread complaining about how all monks are noobs who can't play, and how you should drop out of your dungeon the second you see one some time later today.
You can't let idiots determine what you do; if you like how it plays, play it, play it well, and if someone's stupid enough to make assumptions about how skilled you are based on your class, well, that's probably the type of person you wouldn't want to group with in the first place.

Everyone will roll a Monk, that's true. However since they start at level 1, and not 55 like DK's, there is less of a chance we'll see too many top level Monks running around for a while.

The only reason I made a Dk in Wrath was as Unholy, i could come back as a Ghoul (kinda like a backwords pally bubble, imho, idk why they would take that out), Corpse Explosion (glyphed of course, to blow up more than just the one corpse per use.... and yeah, it looks like it'll come back, but I doubt they'll glyph it like that again), and (I can't remember if it always was like this or not, but...) the lowered CD on Army of the dead...
I just hope they don't take anything cool away from the monk class like they did with the dk.

I'm really looking forward to the idea of a class without an auto-attack, but not sure why.
I'd also just like to say thanks to Dan for all of the awesomeness he has bestowed upon everyone ever. EVER.

i was really hesitant about a class without an autoattack. As one of the devs said at a panel, "The problem is, when an npc has 1% hp and you don't have any energy, the rest of the classes can just wait and an autoattack will kill it, however you'll have to wait for energy"
But upon playing with my little panda, i was extremely happy with the feel of it. The monk has a fun little timing to it, and I assume at max level you'll be pushing to hit something every GCD so that rhythm will continue.
Also, as I leveled up and got my first attack that used the dark side of the force, I started running around and really 1-2 shotting everything, and it dawned on me. With no white hits, your "specials" have a pretty inflated damage range. It'll be interesting to see their play at 90

My main's a caster. I probably won't notice the lack of Autoattack at all.
Eyhk Oct 24th 2011 2:35PM
Think of an arcane mage with insta-spells within melee-range...
How fast does chi fill up though? With no autoattack, it seems there will be periods where you virtually do nothing. Assuming something similar to a rogue (10 energy / second) with no extra talents for simplicity, we can see this scenario.
* 1 second global, 10 chi / second
Chi:Light Orb:Dark Orb - Ability used to end in this state
100:0:0 - Start
100:0:0 - Flying Kick
060:1:1 - Jab
030:2:2 - Jab
040:1:2 - Punch (Finishing move that costs one light orb)
050:1:0 - Kick
020:2:1 - Jab
030:1:2 - Punch
040:1:0 - Kick
010:2:1 - Jab
020:1:1 - Punch
030:0:1 - Punch
000:1:2 - Jab
010:0:2 - Punch
020:0:0 - Kick
------------------
030:0:0 - *Nothing*
000:1:1 - Jab
010:0:1 - Punch
020:0:1 - *Nothing*
030:0:1 - *Nothing*
000:1:2 - Jab
010:0:2 - Punch
020:0:0 - Kick
------------------
*Repeat
Obviously there will be more abilities later on, but those will drain more energy or require more orbs so the drain will probably be faster. If you note the Repeat section, there is a scenario where you spend two entire seconds doing 0 dps and it happens pretty frequently after that since you are using chi or orbs as soon as they are available. Auto-attack fills those gaps with some dps but without it they will need more chi regen. 10 chi/sec seems ok. Some finishers that regen chi or fillers that generate more orbs might fill those gaps, as well as bleeds or other kinds of dots. Of course, then the monk class will become the frantic button pushing that was the enhancement shaman in Wrath, or they will have more seconds in between with nothing to do, but when they do press a button the numbers will be huge to make up for the seconds with 0 dps. Either way, it will be very difficult to make right.

"The problem is, when an npc has 1% hp and you don't have any energy, the rest of the classes can just wait and an autoattack will kill it, however you'll have to wait for energy"
That's when you roll a monk engineer and throw a bomb at the guy.
brb, reserving the name Monkeywrench...

Hi
jlpknights82 Oct 24th 2011 9:42AM
This is a fun little article about the Pandaren play-style. Thanks for it!
Do you have any articles upcoming about impressions on the quests or the story/style of the zone? I know 5 levels isn't a ton to take an impression from, but I'd love to read an article about it if you made one!
The Funia! Oct 24th 2011 10:34AM
Cheers Dan.
You will be missed.
Luotian Oct 24th 2011 10:16AM
I'm excited at the idea of a monk, but I don't play melee almost every myself. I have a little feral druid I love to bits, but that is really kind of it. I *am* glad they'll be sharing gear with druids, though. An excuse to put more in is ALWAYS a good thing.
Personally, I'm dreading MoP a little. All the classes I love to play can be Pandas, and it is going to be really hard not to race-change every single one of them!
James Oct 24th 2011 10:22AM
I got to play to Level 10 at Blizzcon near the end due to no line. After you get the flying kick you get an AOE spinning kick that lasts for a good 10 seconds and costs 2 of each orb. It did great taking out the Hozu that stood around in packs near the later part of the starting zone.
ducss750 Oct 24th 2011 10:37AM
I apologize if this is posted elsewhere: what races can roll monks? Will it be limited to Pandaran or open to a few other (select) races? Humans obviously, Horde equivalent would be ? Undead?
I'm still a believer that not all races are suited to all classes. Too much homogenization is not a good thing.
Damelza Oct 24th 2011 10:43AM
All Races except Worgen and Goblin will be able to be Monks
ducss750 Oct 24th 2011 10:47AM
Odd...I would expect Worgen, given their human roots, to be able to choose the class. I didn't think Draenei would.
Goblins? LMAO no surprise there. "Time is money, friend" doesn't make for an ascetic lifestyle
