Breakfast Topic: Do you plan on playing a monk?

When Cataclysm hit, I wound up rolling that Goblin priest, and not just for the explosions or the Low-Level Tank Project. The more I thought about Necrolord_Bob's spirit of Goblinish insouciance, the more it occurred to me that a Goblin priest with a mercenary approach to, say, health care would be marvelous to play:
Nearby player: Hey, would you mind getting this disease off me?
Goblin priest: Pre-existing condition.
But I digress. Bringing us back to the present: I am not disposed to like the monk class, regardless of how well-designed it might be. They will wear leather and they will steal all the gear that druids would have wanted to roll on, and I am terrified that they will infest leveling groups in the same fashion that death knights infest Outland 5-mans. This pains me, and yet ... somehow I feel they are destined to be kind of badass.
So tell me, readers: Are you going to play a monk, and why?

I've always wanted to heal with my punches. Now I finally can! Hurrah!!
You want healing more!!?! FALCON PUUUU-NNNNCH!!!!
Gnome Monk heals for over 90,000!!

So much this.
I nearly fell out of my chair giggling with glee when I saw gnomes can be monks. While I've rolled most races just because I love to see the lore, gnomes are far and away my favorite, and the idea of a drunken master gnome tank....
Excuse me, I have to go figure out how to freeze myself until MoP's release.
MattKrotzer Oct 24th 2011 8:18AM
Absolutely. Gnome monks. This is awesome.
Rai Oct 24th 2011 8:24AM
BALD gnome monks.
LordVashtal Oct 24th 2011 8:27AM
I'll play insofar as adding "/s Judo " to the start of all my moves, regardless of what that may be (let alone how annoying it would be).
...That is, of course, if they can give me more slots on my main server /cry
LordVashtal Oct 24th 2011 8:28AM
grr, "/s judo *ability*"...stupid html stripping

I liked the idea of a Monk class. Then I saw that Gnomes could be monks.
Give me my time machine now.

I started planning my Gnome monk as soon as it was announced. XD
For the same reason too. I love melee and it sounds like a fun take on it. I love the idea of being able to heal while bashing something in the face.
Casting is kind of boring for me. ^^;;

@ Lord
Judo is overrated. Really, I don't even include the black belt I earned from it on my waist.
That's where I keep all my black belts I've earned. Oh yeah, I'm a black belt.
You know, I have a black belt in Karate, Larate, Jujistu, kickboxing, belt making....bedroom ;)
Seriously, if I don't make a pandaren monk, it's going to be a gnome, and I want to fashion him around the Adventure Sphere from Portal. This kind of pint size, over the top masculine that tanks by punching things.
NE female: LF tank for old school Onxyia raid-
Gnome monk (GM): Well hellooooooooooooo pretty lady....sounds like you need a REAL man to take care of that pesky ol' dragon...don't worry-(flex)-these bad boys? Practically one shot mobs by having them simply LOOK at them.
NE female: Oh god no, not you again...
GM: I know, this creature of perfection is here once more. Don't you fret now...I'll take care of all your problems.
NE: How!?
GM: Easy. Punching it in the face
NE: How will that solve anything!?
GM: How can that NOT solve anything? Use it all the time. Dragon killing, bear wrestling, drinking, sculpting, drinking WHILE sculpting cheese making, little childrens' birthday parties where the brat thinks I'm a new toy, and not a lethal killing machine ready to pounce! Yep...Punch to the face of your problem. That's all you need.

It pleases me greatly that the very first set of comments is people excited about Gnome Monks. This is absolutely the direction I'm going; I'll still roll a Pandaren as well, but it'll be my new shaman, while a pint-sized ball of flailing limbs shall be my monk.
And hey! It's the only class gnomes can be that goblins can't be! We are once again the superior race! Huzzah!

Another vote for a gnome monk. Already trying to figure out what I'm gonna call her (because it definitely needs to be a female gnome monk).
DracoSuave Oct 24th 2011 12:06PM
I AM KICKPUNCHER. MY CYBORG PUNCHES HEAL WITH THE POWER OF KICKS.
Suncatcher Oct 24th 2011 12:45PM
So much this. It feels like melee healing is what the paladin should do, but somehow doesn't. I already have 2 heal/tanks, and the monk will be my third. I love the idea of a combination of shadow priest theory healing, and Holy Light healing in concert. And well leveling as a tank is actually decent speedwise, although I did level my priest Holy.
Plus it is the first model that might come close to my body style. Hmm so much to love. A kind of Falstaff/Volstagg type, with perhaps a short lifespan and a carefree attitude, sounds really fun to create.

What will you name your gnome monk?
I'm thinking Shinpunchyou.
Eyhk Oct 24th 2011 1:14PM
It's quick finger jabs to the pressure points, not punches =b
Peebers Oct 25th 2011 6:59AM
Yeah def gettin in on this gnome monk nonsense. Hopefully they'll even vocalize their attacks like in so many anime.
Tricia Oct 24th 2011 8:03AM
So far, monk class doesn't look too interesting to me. I -will- be making a Pandaren though, and it will probably be shaman :)
quasarsglow Oct 24th 2011 8:05AM
Being a student of unarmed combat myself, I will definitely need to give it a whirl. As a Forsaken. All that willpower channeled into Chi will be amazing.
Nospoon Oct 24th 2011 9:35AM
I hadn't thought much about an undead monk... good idea! I plan on making a monk of every race that can do it and then at level 10 I will hopefully have a good idea of which style I like best.
HappyTreeDance Oct 24th 2011 9:53AM
You know, I'm seriously tempted to make a female forsake monk just because they have the most ridiculously badass unarmed attack animations. And they dual wield attack animation is awesome also.
As for monks. So. Excited. I love healing. I love melee. If I can heal by punching stuff in the face, it's going to be like heaven for me.
I plan to roll a monk on the beta, and level it primarily through healing through dungeons, so I can get a feel for how it works. Then when MoP goes live, I'll level a monk the regular way, so I can get a feel for how the melee works. That way, when I reach 90, I'll understand two of the specs and won't have that horrible feeling "Yay, I just leveled up to 90 dpsing and now I have to learn how to heal! In difficult content!" I've screwed myself over too many times by doing that in the past, and I've found the best way for me to really understand a spec is to just level as it. This is why I have multiples of the classes I really enjoy. Even if my guildies think I'm crazy for it.
