This movie by Irdeen Productions scored the third place prize in the BlizzCon 2011 machinima contest. Too Cute to Kill is an impassioned plea from Gnomes everywhere: Take the time to stop and kill the critters. If you don't, the result will be genetically engineered super-wolves that roam the forests hunting Gnomes.
This movie is chock-full of talent. Too Cute to Kill was inspired by Dark Legacy Comics. It was directed by Matt Greenburg. Irdeen fielded the producer role, handling the editing, special effects, and coordinating the sound design.
Too Cute to Kill is a fun movie, well worth the time it takes to watch. Kick back for a few minutes, put your feet up, and have a good time. Interested in the wide world of machinima? Anyway i was just watching some of irdeens stuff which is quite odd. I think Irdeen does better in music "What would warchief Garrosh do?" and "Boom Da Yadda".
And it was me that killed all the ugly creatures and killed the gnomes, double win!
He tasks me! He tasks me, and I shall have him! I'll chase him round the Moons of Feather, and round the Maelstrom, and round Ragnaros' flames before I give him up! Prepare to alter course!
The machinima contest was really weird. Personally I don't think this one is all that great whereas wowcrendor's submission, while technically not impressive, had an awesome punchline. Also, this Starcraft "may I keep it?" thing seemed amateurish and the joke was very predictable.
The winner however (at least i think it was the winner), the Starcraft + Reality mashup ... amazing.
In the essence of things, a *machinima* contest is about creating... well, machinima--adapting a story told through the appearance of a game through video editing. Two big things make machinima: The video, and the story.
While I would argue also that I think story is the most important aspect of any machinima (as any that does not have an interesting story is bound to lose the attention of its watcher), I could also argue that the video is equally as important (if you see a story drawn out in chicken scratch, it isn't entirely something you want to sit through, no matter how good the story). In this respect, yes, the SC story was a little predictable, and it could have gone somewhere more. The video did, however, look more well put-together in respect to the SC engine than Crendor's was. And while Crendor did make up in the story department, it is still at best, a nitpick on both sides, with the judges deeming the video quality of Crendor's video (perhaps the repetitiveness of the missing friend loop and perhaps the joke being as equally as detectable) the deciding factor in his loss.
tl;dr: While I do agree with your assessment, I do understand why a judge would arrive to the conclusion that he did. Just my take on it.
Normally I like Irdeen, but this was taken almost word for word from Dark Legacy Comics. I'm torn between the usual awesomeness of Irdeen, and the total suck that is plagiarism... I give it a "meh".
I guess you didn't bother to watch the credits where he fully gives credit to Keydar for writing the material. It's not plagiarism if you give credit where credit is due.

I think that joke is way way better than the Irdeen one.

Ok, maybe I was a bit harsh about the "may I keep it?" video - I didn't like it. Done.
W2B edit function. For crying out loud...

Last year's winner was an adaptation of a Dark Legacy Comic strip. That person asked and received full permission from Keydar.
Looks like this year someone wanted to try and repeat that success.

In The Future, all winning machinima will be animated versions of webcomic strips.

So if I raise lots of critters and pamper them, Gnomes will die?
... Interesting. (Evil scheming face)
