I had mine restored back in ICC. I don't know how/if their policy has changed side the announcement of Transmog, but it's worth a shot.

Just open a ticket and tell them the truth. "I tossed my old DK starter zone gear because I couldn't justify the bank space on gear I thought I'd never use again, but now with transmogrification coming I find myself wanting it back. If possible, I was hoping I could get the items restored".
