Blood Pact: Looking at new warlock talents, page 2

Another current ability is also here, Nether Ward. An upgrade of the Twilight Ward, which we can assume is a renaming of Shadow Ward, Nether Ward works exactly there as it does now. Absorbs spell damage and increases resistance to the spell school absorbed. The last choice here is Spell Drain, an interesting new ability. Spell Drain causes the next spell cast at you to heal you for 50% of the damage it would have done instead of causing any damage at all. It's a neat little way of changing up a way to interrupt players, and it has a short enough cooldown that it can be pretty viable. It's a great talent for PVP, and we should see it fairly often I think.
The final tiers
Getting into the fifth tier, we reach the pet tier and the second most interesting list of talents that we've gotten our hands on thus far. The first talent is Grimoire of Supremacy, which upgrades all of your demons into new forms that deal 10% more damage and "have more powerful abilities." Right off the bat, the talent seems awesome because it gives us access to many of the demons that we've been looking to get our hands on for years. Fel Imps, Voidlords, Shiven, Abyssal Lords, Terrorguards ... and Beholders. Wait a second, that list is six demons long! Demonology warlocks only have five demons; the rest of us only have four. That's right -- we don't have any information on it at all right now, but it looks as though we might be getting our grubby little hands on a new slave. Huzzah!
Next, there is Grimoire of Service, which allows you to summon a second pet for 30 seconds every 2 minutes. How Blizzard intends to handle this talent, I'm not entirely sure. It has great potential to be absolutely amazing, but only if you can gain access to those pet's signature abilities, but that would require a secondary pet bar. Without those abilities, though, it's just a lame cooldown where a demon pops out and chews at things for a few seconds. Last and certainly not least, we get back Grimoire of Sacrifice. That's right, the old Demonic Sacrifice is back, letting you kill off your pet to increase health and damage. Totally awesome.

Next we have perhaps the signature talent of this tier, Kil'jaeden's Cunning. How cunning is Kil'jaeden? Well, not cunning enough to survive that whole Sunwell raid thing, but he was able to allow for you to cast while moving. There is a drawback -- the spell takes twice as long to cast while you move -- but the fact that you can cast anything while moving is, as we like to say, a pretty big deal. There are probably a few kinks in this talent that need to be worked out, but it is simply amazing, hands down.
Last, we have what I would consider a rather strange talent in more ways than one. Your choice could be to take Illidian's Guile. Illidan is only half-demon and really mostly just a Night Elf; I wouldn't exactly put him on par with Kil'jaeden and Archimonde, but that's just me. Either way, the talent allows the warlock's primary nuke abilities -- Shadowbolt, Incinerate, and Malefic Grasp -- to deal splash damage to all targets within 10 yards of whomever they hit. There's no value given for this splash damage. I'd assume it will end up being some percentage of damage at this point, but it's still a rather neat ability. Turning your primary nuke into an AOE for 30 seconds every 2 minutes sounds pretty sweet, but most AOE doesn't last that long or comes more frequently, so it's a bit of an awkward talent that'd probably be better served as 15 seconds every minute.

Actually, the funniest thing about Kil'Jaeden's Cunning is that his talent lets us move where he could not! Talk about strike me down and I shall become stronger than you ever know, except the Warlocks were smart enough to use his failure of not moving and buffing themselves, then hiding it behind his name while they laugh at mages!
As for Beholders, it sounds more like Warlocks will be getting those creepy floating Eyeball tentacle monsters, than some new kind of demon all-together...

The point is that it's a new pet, not a new creature
It's a sixth controllable pet where you usually only have a maximum of five
What pet does the beholder upgrade?
devilsei Oct 31st 2011 6:42PM
If I had to guess? The only one that's obvious.
The Eye of Kilrogg.

Tyler skipped checking out the guardian demons.
Imp - Fel Imp
Voidwalker - Void Lord
Succubus (or Felguard?) - Shivan
Felstalker - Beholder (although I would've thought a void terror (like Occu'thar) would be more appropriate)
Infernal - Abyssal
Doomguard - Terrorguard

If the Guardian summons are upgraded, why isn't the Fel Guard being upgraded? With the understand that he's already a unique pet, that would seem to leave him out of the running for the damage increase and the ability upgrades that the other pets receive. Further, the guardian pets don't actually have any true abilities, nor ca you control them. With the wording given, it would be strange to upgrade them.

Soul shards will be affliction only, soulburn is probably either dying or drastically changing
Psiwave Oct 31st 2011 6:23PM
We got some love this blizzcon alright, can't wait to see how the new resources pan out either. (I pray it doesn't flop like soulburn did)

Interesting thought on Soul Link, would you credit it as possible that Soul Link could actually not lower the damage/healing you take, simply duplicate it onto the demon?
I guess it's unlikely, but just wanted to leave a comment about the possibility :)
Boobah Oct 31st 2011 7:32PM
As a possibility, it might work something like the new shaman spirit link totem, since they obviously have the tech for that now.

" How cunning is Kil'jaeden? Well, not cunning enough to survive that whole Sunwell raid thing,"
He did, actually. Defeating him at the Sunwell only banished him, Kil'jaedan is still alive and well.

My guess for Grimoire of Supremacy is that the listed new demons replace the standard 4 as well as the Infernal and Doomguard, meaning no new pet—makes sense to me if you think about the corresponding models (except for Beholder/Felhound), and it would be kind of weird for Demo's signiature pet to change, I think.
Elennoko Oct 31st 2011 6:38PM
For the demons, I don't think warlocks will be getting a new demon.
Fel Imp = Imp.
Voidlord = Voidwalker.
Shivan = Succubus.
Beholder = Felhunter.
Abyssal Lord = Infernal.
Terrorguard = Doomguard.
As for Felguards, either they didn't think of it, or they think felguards are just strong enough as-is, considering they're Demonology only, and if they made them power-up, then it would have been a no-brainer for demonology warlocks.
Terrorguards are the giant winged demons that resemble a Doomguard, but they have a face on their stomach. And the Abyssal Lord is probably that, an Abyssal. Which are just stronger Infernals. Beholders are the giant eye-demons that are constantly annoying to spellcasters in Outland and such. So it's logical they're a replacement for Felhunters.

Me thinks this guy is dead on.
There would be no reason to give an upgraded pet to a tree that already gets.... yes, you guessed it, an upgraded pet.
Bellajtok Oct 31st 2011 7:18PM
Yup, that sounds right. Possibly when you spec Demonology and look at the talent it'll show the Felguard substitute.
Bellajtok Oct 31st 2011 7:24PM
Also, can I just say how much I love this tier? It's the perfect example of the kind of choices we'll get to make in the new talent system: do you want increased passive damage, increased burst damage for your demons, or increased burst damage for yourself?
Daedalus Oct 31st 2011 7:31PM
I was actually thinking Terrorguard would be the replacement for Felguard, since skipping him would make the talent less appealing to demo locks, and the talents are meant to appeal equally to all specs.
I was thinking the one that would get skipped would be Doomguard, as it's kind of iconic as is.
I hope Tyler's right, but I was expecting more along the lines Elennoko suggested.
Bellajtok Oct 31st 2011 7:51PM
@Daedalus
Good point. It would make more sense for it to be just the normally summoned demons, so I guess if the Terrorguard is the advanced Felguard, it all works out.... I really do want another demon.

Terrorguard: http://www.wowhead.com/npc=18661#.
This looks pretty much like an upgraded Doomguard to me.
Same with most others:
Abyssal: http://www.wowhead.com/npc=17454
Void Lord: http://www.wowhead.com/npc=32230
(continues below...)
Xayíde Nov 1st 2011 9:29AM
Fel Imp: http://www.wowhead.com/npc=21135
The Shivan doesn't look much like a Succubus, but it's still obvious it will be her upgrade: http://www.wowhead.com/npc=23220
I couldn't find any Beholders though... Anyone got a link?
Liche Nov 1st 2011 9:39AM
Following Elenoku's theory, the only viable choice in this tree for demo locks would be the Grimoir of Service? no self respecting person would play a warlock WITHOUT a demon... who would make you cups of tea?
