The Classifieds: Surveys for great science
The Classifieds brings you weekly news from around the WoW community, including our famous Random Acts of Uberness shout-outs to players who make your WoW sessions memorable.
This is survey week on WoW Insider. We have a quick player wealth survey below, and then Nick Yee needs your help behind the cut. What's the point of having a multimillion-player community if it can't be exploited for science?
This is what Xsinthis of Shadowmoon (US-A) had to say:
I'm looking for more people to complete my World of Warcraft Wealth Survey. Using this quick, painless 4 question survey I hope to answer questions about wealth in the World of Warcraft. The survey can be found here: http://www.xsinthis.net/survey Everyone is encourage to take the survey, data is needed from all walks of digital life, from the copperless lvl 50, to the players who need guild banks to hold all their gold, the more data collected the more accurate the results will be!
Random Acts of Uberness
It's when another player lights up your night with precise play, a wicked sense of humor or unexpected generosity that your login becomes something to remember. Share your Random Acts of Uberness with theclassifieds@wowinsider.com. Keep things brief (150 words or less, please), and be sure to list everyone's character names and home realms or battlegroup. Don't be afraid of sending an entry more than once if it doesn't appear; sometimes internet dragons eat email, and we'd hate to let that keep deserving players from getting their due.
If you've sent us an Act of Uberness and don't see it appear here, feel free to resend it. After all, there be dragons in that internet.
Community news
Nick Yee and Nic Ducheneaut are working on another MMO study. Check out the information below and help them out:
Have you ever wondered if playing a gnome in World of Warcraft says something about a player's personality? Is it really the case that women prefer to play healers? And how similar or different are US and EU players? We are social scientists at the Palo Alto Research Centers and we too have often wondered about these questions. And that's what this study is about.
We're trying to figure out how our behaviors in virtual worlds may or may not relate to who we are in the real world. The lead researchers in our team are Nick Yee and Nic Ducheneaut, both of whom have a long history of studying online games. We are also the same researchers who brought you the Daedalus Project and the PARC PlayOn Project.
To be a part of our newest research project only takes about 15 minutes to complete a web survey. We will then use an automated script to collect your characters' data from the Armory. Last year, we collected data from the US, Hong Kong and Taiwan. This time around, we're expanding recruitment to WoW players in the EU as well.
To participate in this study, you must be:
Employment: Guilds recruiting
Looking for more? Send in your guild name, realm, a link to your guild website or armory listing and a sentence or two on your guild's focus (10-man, RP, late-night raiding, whatever) to theclassifieds@wowinsider.com.
Late night clubbing If you're a night owl, this might be the group to get together with. ClubbedToDeath LFM: Long after normal Guilds have gone to sleep, we are still out clubbing. New level 4 late night guild on PVE Terokkar with +5%exp/+5rep, ready to start 5mans, taking any/all (complies with Horde Disabled Tauren Standard: Tauren Without Hooves Program for those wounded in attacks with gnomish engineers). -- signed Poppychulo GM
No strong opinions They just can't work up any strong opinions, one way or another. Apåthy of Dragonmaw US (H) is recruiting more mature, friendly players to join our family for PVP and other fun activities. We do BGs, Arenas, and healthy amounts of World PVP. Visit http://www.apathydmaw.com/ or contact Kaow, Sheeni, or Eskii on Dragonmaw for more information.

Thanks for the help everyone! This research into online gaming would not be possible without the help of the community.

I'm almost done, but the trait "Has few artistic interests" doesn't quite sound right as an agree/disagree question. If I disagree, it could mean that I have many, or I could have none (I have many).
Xsinthis Nov 2nd 2011 10:45PM
Likewise thanks to everyone who has completed my gold survey so far, my results have nearly doubled today alone!
Nick Yee Nov 2nd 2011 10:48PM
@VioletArrows It's one of the unfortunate quirks of this standardized personality scale.
Mortenebra Nov 2nd 2011 11:16PM
I know this is going to sound embarrassing but, man, I am a huuuuuge fan of your work, Nick. I used some of them to write two of my academic papers in college surrounding self-representation and gender-representation in MMOs via linguistic markers. Keep up the good work!!
Mortenebra Nov 2nd 2011 11:39PM
Errr... Not embarrassing that I like your work but that I sound like a swooning, fainting fangirl. You know, I think I'm just going to go hide in a corner now.
Nick Yee Nov 3rd 2011 12:00AM
@Mortenebra /hugs. Glad to hear my work was useful to you!

*agrees w VioletArrows
Don't have a lot of interests, but not sure what side that is --> picked the middle
VioletArrows Nov 2nd 2011 9:50PM
Aaahh, yeah, it's thesis/finals time in college. Forgot all about that season. Millions of college surveys passed around and filled out in every department (but especially the social science folks).
I do not miss that. Well, except for the studies I got (paid) to do for the robotics, haptics, game design, and virtual/alternate reality departments. :p

I need a good listing of such services, especially free ones. In this new age of internet, I believe it is more effective and economical to advertise online. The benefits are plenty.
