WoW Rookie: How to pick a good name when all the good ones are taken

Especially on old servers, it can feel like all the good names are already claimed. Creating a new character with a strong, iconic name is one heck of a challenge, especially if you want to avoid joke and parody names like McDoomChicken. You can give up your dreams of finding real-world names like Stephen or Michael; the only way you'll grab a straightforward name is to grab it on a brand new server (and we're fairly unlikely to see a brand new server any time soon).
With Mists of Pandaria careening toward us with all the excitement of a monk rolling along in a fuzzy ball, now's the time to get your unique snowflake name reserved. Rest assured that every variation of Jack Black you can create has already been taken. Let's talk about how you can create a unique, interesting name without resorting to all the special font characters WoW will allow.
Examine the theme of your character
Even people who don't roleplay often have a sense of who their characters are as people. Do you consider your character a tank, a bull-hearted defender of friends and allies? Is your character a sly rogue, clever and sneaky? Getting a grip on the themes and playstyle of your character can go a long way toward providing name inspiration.
Taking the time to put those ideas and themes into words will help you create a list of possible names for your character. An obvious example is everyone's favorite dragon brother, Nefarian. You couldn't have Nefarian without nefarious. The game itself uses this kind of roundabout name conversion all the time. Sinestra obviously stems from sinister.
Dig around for a good adjective to describe your character, and then see if any of the variations appeal to you. Here's some examples:
- Valiant can be Valiont, Vallant, Valiance.
- Sacred could become Sacrad, Sacredde, or even Dercas.
- Wrathful grows into Rath, Wrouth, or any other variation.
Don't be afraid to look at other languages when you're searching for good words. Plenty of opportunity lurks outside of your native tongue, and you can get some really creative options that way.
Describe the physicality of your character
There's a reason everyone talks about Dwarves named Longbeard and Gnomes called Cogspinners. These names reference distinct, visual reminders about the races. This is also why you see a half-million Tauren with names using hoof, horn, and udder.
Putting together a good name that references physical traits is actually a little more difficult than you might think. Describing a Night Elf as something like Inkface probably won't get your point across.
Here's some good, archetypical words you can use to describe each race:
- Blood elf Gold, hair, eyes, grace, spire
- Dwarf Beard, axe, brew, ale
- Draenei Light, shine, heal, hew
- Gnome Cog, gear, steam, whisker, pate
- Goblin Boom, bomb, fire, crash
- Night elf Wood, dusk, stride, eve
- Orc Fang, dark, hammer, scream
- Tauren Hoof, horn, field, plain
- Troll Tusk, pipe, mojo, tall
- Worgen Fang, tooth, claw, fur, paw
Draw from legend
Lastly, reach out to some historical peoples and co-opt their legends for use in game. Ragnaros won't mind.
Obviously, the most popular legends and the straight-up names won't be available for use. I can't imagine anyone scoring Lancelot or Morgana at this late point in the game. But you can tinker with the names and pull out something more unique.
Morganos might be available on your server, or even Zeusian, Herator, and Lancell. Just like using a theme to describe your character, try to keep your unique version evocative of the original.
Take your time
The most important thing when desigining your character's new name is to take your time. Don't rush into something you might regret just because you're in a hurry. You can change your name later, of course, but save yourself a little cash and get the name right from the beginning.

Worst name I ever saw, Lolpriestlol

I know a few folks on our server--an older RP realm--who are absolute wizards at getting normal, everyday, names. Mary, Diana, Maggie, Lisa, Penelope...a few I know I'm forgetting. Mostly one person. it's odd. Try normal names anyway!
Some folks go with a character's last name, and use a RP addon to show their first name, as well as vice versa. Most of mine are first names, with the addon giving their last name.
I like taking normal names and changing a letter or two. Or names inspired by characters in obscure books. I've recycled a few older, pre-WoW character names, like Vember, my druid (goes well with my roomie's druid, October). Nature and science, old languages, international baby name generators, all work great. Also, older century names--the Puritans had some crazy ones, and there are some old-school British and American names that have fallen out of fashion.
I'm a RPer on a RP realm, so I go for things that could be real names, aren't too long, nor too difficult to pronounce or spell.

Alt codes.
DracoSuave Nov 4th 2011 4:09AM
Alt-Codes are for people who don't like getting into groups or pugs.
If I gotta pull up Character Mapper, or run a special addon just to invite me to my group, you're not getting in.

I didn't know that Beardaxe Brewale was still around!? How's he doing these days?

Um, where are the Forsaken on that list of Race names, I mean I can understand Humans not being on there, but the forsaken have a lot of stuff too.
Eccentrica Nov 3rd 2011 8:50PM
Because the Forsaken are dead humans? If his name was Torville before Arthas blew through, his name is Torville now.
Eccentrica Nov 3rd 2011 8:48PM
Names can have lots of sources. When I create a new character I often persue the dictionary and/or the thesaurus for inspiration. Great names can come from common words with bits lopped off (Eccentrica, Controversia), old words with bits lopped off (Macassar), common words themselves (Malefeasant), adjectives (Precocious, Mischevious), adjective+name (Madmurray), translations of words, remote and obscure place names, the possiblities are endless. Or you could get damn lucky and find the name Frank available.

My main, Druinn came from, of course, Druid which he is. I knew he'd get the nickname Dru, (which he did) when I raided and that's what I wanted to happen. Love that guy. Making names is half the fun.

Some of my characters names come from a mythological figure or being. Some of them I plugged concepts that related to them somehow into Google Translate into languages that fit their race until I came up with something I could mash together. A couple were shamelessly ripped from one of my favourite series of books.
They all could be real names, although even without special characters some of them still relate in a 'bloody hell, woman' when I tell a friend the name of a new character.
Micte Nov 3rd 2011 9:09PM
... relate should be result. That's what I get for not paying attention to what I'm writing.

I like using my character names from my favorite books, since I generally read books that aren't exactly mainstream they're usually free :). Although my first two characters we're Dark Scion, which basically means Dark Descendant and then I really liked the name Ershi but that was taken so I figured I might as well add Dark to it, I admit these we're bad mistakes but they grew on me :P.
Darky Nov 3rd 2011 9:12PM
Shadow Priest and Death Knight; respectively.

A good suggestion is to bring in terms or names for other hobbies you may have. Cars are my passion and I'm a big fan of motorsport, so I like to use names of race tracks around the world. Ones that are simple or common like Spa or Suzuka are usually taken but other names are rarely ever taken like Monza, Mugello, Brno, Interlagos, Estoril, Algarve, Imola, etc. Coincidentally, many of these places are named after the city they're in.
CDave Nov 3rd 2011 9:17PM
I meant to say "Not coincidentally". They're named so because it's the name of the city they're at or nearby.
biggjudicem Nov 3rd 2011 9:21PM
all of my chars follow something from tip 1. all of my characters are also Bigg-. Usually it's bigg- then something about the class.
Bigg-Judicem (pally) from the Latin 'iƫdicem' is 'to judge'
bigg-shade (S-priest)
bigg-baddworf (worgen druid)
bigg-shot (hunter)
Bigg-bladez (rogue)

My method is a conglomeration of tweaking the random name generator and appropriating J.R.R. Tolkien's created language to craft names. The man was really brilliant, by the way. It's been fruitful so far. For example, I'll take Tolkien words such as Hith- (chill) and -ring (mist) and compound them to create a Death Knight name. It's actually pretty fun...kind of like linguistic tetris. For reference, try the Silmarillion's indexes! ;D! Every once in awhile when my creative juices are dammed up, I resort to tweaking the random name generator, which can actually be pretty productive, as previous posters have already noted.
my advice to new players struggling for a name...don't be discouraged if your choice is taken! let the creative juices flow, and for Light's sake make it an actual name and less of a generic trait/crude body part description!
icepyro Nov 3rd 2011 9:46PM
It amazes me how many of the "Randomize" names are not taken, especially for trolls. As a result of this abuse however, I now have most of my trolls either beginning or ending with some of said default names
As for changing letters for a nick you want, I will accept 1 or so letters if it means the name still naturally sounds the same. My hunter is Nimmrod since Nimrod was taken, for instance, but really, that's about the extent of that.
Erebos Nov 3rd 2011 9:49PM
Sometimes I use a theme, and sometimes I just have a name in mind that I know I want to use. My main is named Synchrony, simply because I thought of it one day and liked it. My resto shaman alt is Candlejak (from Freakazoid) because I like the character and thought it was a neat name.
But my paladin (holy), I named Luminosa, to give off the "light" feeling, and because she's a female (spent quite a while on thesaurus.com looking at light words). My resto druid I named Verdancy (again, looking for plant-y words; this one means flora or greenery).
Either way, I hate when people use names which obviously have no thought in them. If people are going to know me by my characters, it's going to be the way I want it to be, not based on "Lolimarogue" or what have you.
