When Cata launched, I was secretly hoping for a mercenary third faction. Or, at least, the option to defect and join an underground society made up of individuals who were disgusted with current leadership, or just plain didn't see faction boundaries (like Fiona's Caravan in EPL).
The way I see it, my character's been operating like this for a while-- I just liked Thrall enough and thought, after the next big bad guy was put down, we could go back to analyzing relations between Horde and Alliance. I actually had some Horde pride back then, representing my faction in the fight against all of those bad guys. It's kind of like the Stargate mentality: Sure, you're representing only one nation of Earth but once you've seen what's "out there," the squabbles between nations seem petty and vastly insignificant.
But now... Every quest I do, every instance I complete, every boss I take down-- It's not for the Horde. It's for Azeroth. Garrosh can take his so-called "conquest" and "orc superiority complex" and shove it. In case it wasn't clear, I helped save the world because I happen to like living, not so some half-naked orc could get a chance at playing "Conqueror." My hunter is a completely independent entity; only her race (and current gameplay mechanics) marks her as a member of the Horde. When Vol'jin turned his back on Garrosh and threatened to put an arrow through him, I wanted to say, "Let me join you!!"
I digress, however... I'm already considered a mercenary by going to and fro about Azeroth, even if I'm doing quests for races of my own faction. Why not give us the option of going independent?

The Fiona's Caravan questline through EPL really might be one of my absolute favorites in the current game. I love those characters....and can only hope they crop up again somewhere in the future.

Yes, I think the only way of splitting up the current two is some kind of defection by players to a 3rd faction. But I'm guessing that as soon as it's live, 2/3 of a server population will defect and leave the other two low population... so they might as well join together as well... and well... we're back to 2 factions...
