It was dealing the first point of damage that tagged mobs up until either sometime in BC or Wrath, when it was changed to the first bit of non-proximity aggro tagged mobs. Warlocks would see their dots go up on a mob, only somebody else would hit it before the first tick, and then wander off while the dots sent the mob chasing after the warlock, then turn around and loot the mob at their convenience.
