This is one of those things... where we know blizzard has the data. And we would love to know the real numbers, if only to measure our e-peens , but we know blizzard would never release the information.

I'm personally at 187k gold, which i think is probably in maybe the top 10-15%, but i know a lot of players, some i know personally, who have much much more gold. Thats down from my record of 224k at the end of wrath... my goal was to go into cata gold capped, but then they raised it.

But i've bought vial of the sands and posidus (a steal @ 40k) this expac and put together thundurfury and recently sulfuras, so ive spent at least over 100k so far with cata. But i dont buy TCG stuff or BoE gear, have every BoE pet, so i really dont have much to spend gold on unless Reins of the Crimson Deathcharger show up on the AH for a reasonable price, or i decide to go buy a kirin tor ring, or the 8 and 16k mammoths, i dont really have anything left to spend my gold on...

But if a majority of people only have around 35k, the 40k goldsink that the sandstone drake is seems pretty reasonable.
