Blue posts and other WoW news: Skyrim silence

The internet is pretty quiet today. In fact, it was quiet this weekend, too. I'm chalking it up to Skyrim.
Don't forget to check out The Daily Quest and our Weekly Podcast Roundup to find out what else is going on in the WoW community. And if you have a news tip, feel free to drop us a line and let us know.
Blue posts
We see discussions all the time in which people say they don't like beggars or that most of them are most likely veterans re-rolling a new character. While this is sometimes true, there are still new players out there looking for a little help and a welcoming face or two. To that end, I thought I'd kick up a bit of discussion about this very topic. With the holidays coming, the potential for new community members joining in the Azeroth increases, but what will they find the welcoming committee?
- What sorts of things do you do to help new players?
- Have you ever considered spending time with a new player (or even a reroll) just to help them get a good start on things?
- What is the best advice you could give to a new player just taking their first fledgling steps into Azeroth?
We've updated our Trading Card Game art gallery to feature ten new pieces. Each image is taken directly from the official World of Warcraft Trading Card Game. Be sure to give a shout-out to your favorite pieces in the comments.

I am loving Skyrim *so* much.
Minor spoiler for sidequest:
I told a blacksmith I'd find a dog for him as a pet. I searched... and found a talking dog. I told him I was surprised that he spoke. He replied "This land has giant flying lizards, and talking cats on two legs. What's so surprising about me talking?"
Turns out he's the pet of a Daedra, and they had a "bit of a falling out" (his words). So I am now travelling across Skyrim with this talking dog, trying to win back the favour of this Daedra so the dog can be his pet again.
I think the awesomeness of that speaks for itself.

I found something familiar in Skyrim: the ghost of a little girl in a burned house who told me she's missing her doll, doesn't know where her father is, and that her father says that she shouldn't talk to strangers. Remind you of anything?

The internet quietness is definitely related to Skyrim. Also to MW3, as this last weekend was the first follow its release, but on the nerdy side of things it's definitely more Skyrim related.
I heard that it sold 3.5 million copies over the weekend. That's amazing. They did a hell of a job hyping this game.

It was quiet for me this weekend in WoW because me and about 80% of my guild were playing in the SW:TOR beta.

I only have time to play one game, and barely enough time to play that. For me it's WoW, although my kids play Assassin's Creed and Halo and ...
I like new players, helping a new player is a decent thing to do in a game where so many people stroke their egos by being jerks. Usually, I suggest they find a friendly, leveling guild. One of my favorite experiences in-game was when my main got my first flying mount ... and a couple of times now when guildies ding 60 for the first time on THEIR mains I've popped for their first flying mount. (It helps that it's not 5000 gold anymore).
I've also given gear to some of the really low toons, although I generally don't like begging. 100 gold is less than 30 minutes in TB on my tank, I don't mid spending 30 minutes to help someone new out. If they are nice people.

I used to be an adventurer like you once, then I caught an arrow in the knee...
Elmo Nov 15th 2011 8:15AM
I had that happen, and then it bugged and stayed in there for the rest of the day, just like that arrow in my face.
My Nord is a real tough guy to keep on going.

The "source" on the Blues posts is wrong... takes you to Wow.com.... what a dumb name for a website...

Sometimes I feel like the only person on earth who does not give a shit about those games. :\
Drakkenfyre Nov 14th 2011 11:14PM
Never been into any of the Elder Scrolls games. To play this one, it would have to come down real cheap. Like $20 or less. Maybe $10.

I tried with Oblivion. I'd had enough when I came to an entire village that was completely empty in like the first 3 hours after escaping the sewers, wandering what felt like friggin' forever, and the only other people I'd seen were bandits that had tried to kill me. I also realized that I spent 2 of those hours customizing my character, only to figure out I'd never see any of the work I did or even if it'd make any difference in anything I did.
I watched Simon and Lewis start a new game of Skyrim, watched him steal and try to hack people up, realize that every review or utterance about Skyrim I've seen the past four days (and I've seen a crapton) was people giggling gleefully as they sowed chaos, and figured it was just a bug riddled Grand Theft Oxcart with vikings. :/

I'd wait for a price-drop as well, but that's probably down to the $90 cost it has in Australia.
(Psst, game developers - our Dollar is at parity, stop charging us at 2005 exchange rates)
Kylenne Nov 15th 2011 1:35AM
I've tried and tried, but I just can't get into them. Oblivion was when I stopped trying.
Pyromelter Nov 15th 2011 1:55AM
I'm completely with you kylenne. Tried morrowind and oblivion and gave up after 5 minutes. Watched a friend play and had no idea what he found fun about the game. I feel the same way watching people play skyrim.
On the other hand, Dark Souls looked so damn fun I went out and bought right away, and have been having a blast playing that game.
Jex Nov 15th 2011 7:20AM
@ Violet Arrows:
"I came to an entire village that was completely empty"
Yes. There's a reason why. Exploration would have discovered it. There's probably a mod that puts a dude with a ! above his head smack bang in the middle of it though...
"the first 3 hours after escaping the sewers, wandering what felt like friggin' forever, and the only other people I'd seen were bandits that had tried to kill me."
Turn around. There's a massive city right behind you. It's got lots of people in it.
Noyou Nov 15th 2011 8:43AM
Wow. I was completely hooked on oblivion. Played thru it 2.5 times. I had fun just making my own weapons and armor. As far as not running into people? Not sure how you did that. There's no trade chat to ask people where things are. When you come out of the sewers you are outside the biggest city in the game. Once you "explore" and area you can always fast travel to it. I also think WoW could do some good to have their style of tutorials in the starter areas. Haven't got Skyrim yet, probably this week.
Drakkenfyre Nov 15th 2011 11:38AM
Look at the Elder Scrolls fans come out to downvote me.
I didn't say Elder Scrolls was bad. I said I have never been into them. I am not going to spend full price on a game which I have no interest in the entire series so far, and the current one I don't have much interest in either.
Especially considering the engine on the pc version is known for being buggy. I think getting screwed over by the bugs is part of the Elder Scrolls tradition for gamers.
Elzam Nov 14th 2011 10:40PM
Totally neglected my main alt's Valor Points this week all because of Skyrim. I'm sure my main wouldn't have them except you hit max for a full run of Firelands. Every few hours I think "Man, I should do Molten Front / a Heroic / Level an alt," but I just load up Skyrim instead and play Harry Potter at the mage college for a few hours...
Still need to set aside time to cap out all my JP though around this beast of a game before patch, however.

The source link for "The Welcoming Committee: New Players" is to www.wow.com. FYI.

I noticed that too , since I'm mobile I was hoping someone had posted the proper link for me to read.
Did a bit of research and it looks like this is the right one:
