Actually, he said his girlfriend was a very different PLAYER.
I took him to be talking specifically about his way of interacting with people in game, not about his general pattern of interaction.
Agree that finding a female friend isn't the right approach.
Maybe I am an antisocial 40-year old, but I don't hang out with workmates outside of work, and I agree with those who said that guys my age aren't going to drive 12 hours to see most friends just because.
Perhaps I am just more like the original letter writer generally. I like my guild and am happy with it, but I genuinely see the other folks in the guild as in-game friends, like nice colleagues. It wouldn't occur to me to interact with them out of game.
