I may be assuming waaaay too much here, but this kinda sounds like we may be dealing with younger folks. Like, late teens, where every relationship is a train wreck waiting to happen :p

Yeah, this was my thought, too. People in their twenties aren't usually appealing to their SO's parents about relationship problems, which suggests she's living at home.
