GameStop offering Black Friday deal on WoW Battle Chest and expansions

Retail gaming store GameStop is offering a huge deal on Black Friday for those who want to pick up World of Warcraft. The WoW Battle Chest, which includes both WoW and The Burning Crusade expansion, can be snapped up for $9.99, and both Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm will be available for $19.99 each. This means that players looking to get started with WoW can pick up the whole collection for $50 total, which is a great deal no matter how you look at it.
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and falls on Friday, Nov. 25 this year. So if you're looking to pick up the game for a friend (can we say Recruit-A-Friend, anyone?) or to open a second account for yourself, this would be an ideal time to do it for an ideal price.

Any word on if this will extend north of the border?
zinckiwi Nov 14th 2011 1:28PM
Judging by the photo, it extends to Europe!
(Yes, yes, photo may not accurately depict blah blah blah.)

Honestly with SW:TOR just around the corner I would be shocked if this kinda pricing doesn't become standard for the set.

I mostly agree; Blizzard should really bring down the upfront cost before a player can join the end-game to the $50-$60 range, or perhaps even lower.
At it's normal $100 price for the whole package, WoW is just too expensive to pick up when compared with games such as Rift, TOR, TSW, GW2, and a number of other MMOs - not to mention all the F2P options.

I don't suppose they could extend the special to gametime, huh :/

Kinda thought about writing a thing about it being more complicated to do it for subscription costs, but decided to just go with a simple NOPE.

Blizzard needs to consolidate any and all previous expansions into a single, generic product. Offer only two items to purchase, the legacy app, and the current expansion.
I tried to convince a buddy at one point to try the game out, and he was turned off by the up front expense of having to pay for each version of the game.
I would imagine this is becoming more and more of a hindrance to attracting new players.

I couldn't agree more. In fact wasn't this bundle available even when Burning Crusade was the current expansion? 20-30$ should get you all three previous while the current expansion is full price.
DarkWalker Nov 14th 2011 3:13PM
Instead of offering the base game and the expansions as separate boxes, offer just a fully bundled, $40-$50 package that comes with the latest expansion, plus free copies of every previous expansions, a free copy of the base game, and the free month.
The players that already have the game would have to get the same package, possibly for the same price, although it would be better if the free month also applied to them.
Finally, give the newest expansion for free to any player that keeps subscribed through the whole previous expansion; this should provide some incentive for players to remain subscribed.

Isn't BC just included with Vanilla now? I have a trial account that I just use to form raids with myself, and even on that account I can roll Draenei and Blood Elves - and that's not even a full retail account. My point is, the Battle Chest isn't really a value add compared to just buying the "brown box". It does come with strategy guides, but those are hilariously out of date at this point. If you check Gamestop's website, "brown box" and the battle chest are both listed at the same price, $19.99, so getting it for $9.99 instead is definatley a deal, but calling it the "Battle Chest including Burning Crusade" is kind of overselling its value.

Technically Blizzard is calling this the "digital Battle Chest"
Cephas Nov 14th 2011 4:04PM
What Blizzard calls the product they sell in their digital store is kind of beside the point, I was talking about the physical product that GameStop is selling in their stores. If you were to just buy the physical brown box you're effectively getting all of the contents of the "digital Battle Chest".

This is not entirely correct. The Brady guide in the current Battlechest on the shelf in Walmart that I bought a few days ago has information, maps, art, and zone listings that include Cataclysm. It does not cover the newer classes and races in depth because that's not what the Battlechest includes.

As BC is already included in the original WoW now, just wait for Blizzard to do it's sale of WoW for $5 and then pick up the expansions cheap.
They just need to do a full expansion battlechest at this point though.

After GameStop's Deus Ex fiasco, I doubt any more of my dollars will be heading their way. I'll just buy directly from Blizz, TYVM.
VioletArrows Nov 14th 2011 3:59PM
I remember around this time last year (and maybe the year before it?) the Blizzard store had a Black Friday/holiday sale where they dropped vanilla and BC down to $5 each and then LK for $20 anyway. Then all the retailers dropped their prices to match. So they might do it again this year.

And frankly, given our GameStop's history of not ordering enough to cover preorders/not having enough stock I wouldn't be surprised if they 'ran out' of this stuff before selling very much.
Drakkenfyre Nov 14th 2011 8:20PM
Bronwyn, every GameStop does that.
Some stores have admitted to overselling games. Your preorder ticket doesn't mean shit to them, and they will just tell you to come back later.
I don't deal with GameStop much anymore. Hell, go check Wal-Mart for price matching on WoW. It's better than GameStop.

If you're getting a second account for yourself, you don't need to buy the game again. Even if you're putting it on a second computer, you can download the game client again with all the updates and expansions from your original account from your Battle.net account page.
