You absolutely need some sort of addon to figure out what killed you. I agree with the poster above, go for recount. (I also like recount for leveling as it gives you quantitative feedback on your character damage or healing progression.) Trying to simply look through the combat log to figure it out is just not worth it. If you really don't want to see your dps from recount, just hide it, or keep it on the "Deaths" tab.
