Most of the time I trust Blizzard to know what they are doing. I think that most of the changes made to the game are probably for the better overall. However, archeology is one of the few things that's made me think that sometimes they just don't.
They say all the time now that their main priority is that things be fun. But I've never known anyone to describe Archeology as anything but a soul-destroying grind. And if you ever have someone describe archeology to you, it's immediately obvious that it's not a fun thing to do. I don't understand how Blizzard could have imagined that Archeology would be something that people would actually find in any way enjoyable.
They would have been much better spending the development time that went into it on making fishing more enjoyable - as they said they were going to and then never mentioned again. Making one dull profession into a fun profession would have been much better than adding in a second, arguably even duller, secondary profession.

Hey, they said they were going to improve fishing, and they did! We got a bobber icon on mouseover, and then a hook!
Those are way more exciting than the silly gear that used to pop up!
...and now I feel like Mon Mothma. "Many man-hours died to bring us this new feature..."

I know I am repeating myself - but hell, if Blizzard can, I can - but I still think that Blizzard's way to 'make fishing more fun' simply involved coming up with Archaeology.
While you can't catch 200g fish and the (very) occasional epic, at least fishing gives you benefits from level 6 onwards, doesn't involve hours of travel, has guaranteed results, has two weekly contests, a lot more *fun* achievements connected to it (I mean, come on, one of them is fishing up a bobdarn *raid boss*), daily quests on all three 'continents' with rewards that can easily amount up to 200g *a day* (hellooo Dalaran).
That said - I did all the Archeology achievements. But it's something that I - well, did. I am still cooking and doing fishing, yet I do not see me doing any digging anymore, because it's - well - kinda pointless.

I think the problem is that they didn't spend months upon months testing it and grinding out the artifacts like we have. I have to say since I spent three weeks grinding for the 2h weapon and then getting super annoyed with it I just gave up, there was no real point to it anymore.

"We scrapped Path of the Titans to focus on Archeology. It will be a way to progress you character past end game and be fun. "
Dirty liars. Like you said " soul-crushing grind" except there is no progression. There is no fun and even the rewards aren't worth the sheer STUPIDITY of making me fly all over the map to follow a horrible UI display which often changes its effing mind on what direction to go to get a crappy piece of junk and a couple of points in the skill.
I don't have it trained on 3 of my 4 characters. My main only has it because I thought I could get pets and a mount from it. Yea right. It's like the damn Shard of Contempt all over again.
This thing is the definition of bad grinds and poor planning. Almost every suggestion here would improve it, yet they seem to think it I fine.

I am definitely not a Blizzard Basherâ„¢, I played WoW for years and had a great time.
But archeology is horrible. It is easily the biggest dud they ever put into the game. Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if a game designer lost their job because of how bad it is. Archeology is the perfect evidence for people who argue that MMORPG makers sometimes forget what the "G" stands for in that acronym.

If they dropped ANYTHING forf archeology it was either the biggest mistake ever or that thing was even worse - hard to imagine.
I have tried archeology on ONE toon, did not even get too far and decided it was so pointless it did not desrved to even pay attention to. My toons do not even train it.
They try to push it by attching it to other secondary professions for achievement - I pass on that one.
Saying that archeology is a dud is such an understatement that I have no REAL way to describe it.

Archaeology was a huge disappointment for me. I'm notorious as an obsessive grinder, chasing down things like Brood of Nozdormu rep and rare drop pets; once I had my recipe, mounts, and achievements, I quit Archaeology.
Oh, I still try it out from time to time. But the rewards just aren't enough to balance out how dull it is. There's no fun in it, aside from that occasional "project finished!" moment. I really wish it'd been a mini-game of some sort, like "smash some rocks" or "solve a puzzle". There's no sense of progression, either; once you're at the cap, the more you do it, the more junk you get. (Perhaps we should get an addon that rates your "junk-to-reward" ratio for a session?)
In its current iteration, it's basically Mining, except you don't really know where the nodes are; nobody wants what you get (except vendors); and each reward you find reduces your odds of getting the next. There's nothing to draw people back. At least with Fishing, you get useful things. Archaeology you don't. They need to make it fun in its own right, regardless of reward.
I expect to see a new artifact type (Pandaren?) added, but I doubt they fix it for 5.0. It's in need of such a huge overhaul that it's likely to be saved for the following expansion.

I am practically the QUEEN of patience when it comes to these sorts of things in my guild. I worked my way through Insane in the Membrane, back when it included the Shen'dralar, all while keeping my Bloodsail rep at Honored while getting my Goblin rep to exalted. I farmed Stratholme for Rivendare's Charger, got the 100 mount achievement (and then some!) back in Wrath. I pushed to get the 55 Exalted Reputations achievement for my guild when it was bugged and only counting the reps from whoever had the most. I leveled fishing to max level with each new expansion. I even leveled Archaeology on my druid alt and farmed my ass off until I got the recipe for Vial of the Sands!
But, after getting all the rares for Orcs, Draenei, Vrykul, Nerubian, and Dwarves on my main, I am finally grinding to a halt... It has been MONTHS since I've seen a rare. I would argue that Archaeology, once you've gotten the more "common" rares, becomes more soul-crushing and mentally unhinging than even the old Insane in the Membrane achievement. At least with Insane in the Membrane, while progress was ridiculously slow it actually felt like I was MAKING PROGRESS. With archaeology, you don't even have THAT. Got another common artifact? Oh well! You still have the same ridiculously tiny chance of getting a rare as you did before! But unlike, say, Rivendare's mount, you have to run all over the continent and comb through several other race's artifacts for the mere CHANCE you'll get the digsites you need. It's like trying to farm Rivendare's mount by queuing up for a random dungeon out of ALL the dungeons in the game, but without the ability to teleport directly to the dungeon.
I told myself I'd give up archaeology once I got the pet and/or mount from Tol'vir... but I fear that by the time THAT happens I'll be curled up in a straight jacket in the corner of a padded room muttering things about "Scandalous Silk Night Gowns" and "Not another Sketch of a Desert Palace!"
