The Queue: Yoithink of New Yohk Knicks
Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Mike Sacco will be your host today.
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is out, and I've been having a blast playing as Nova. I've also been whipping up trouble as Ghost Rider! Puns! But for real, here's a little bit of Mahvel nostalgia for you. Mildly NSFW due to language. It's so Pringles.
P.S.: If anybody wants to play me on Xbox Live, my GT is CaptCorduroy. Just don't pick Vergil or Wesker, or I'll turn my Xbox off.
raposo02790 asked:
How does rep gain from faction tabards Work? I'm leveling a 75 mage thru Wrath dungeons, and I'm currently rocking an Ironforge rep and sometimes I get rep for thefaction and other times I do not. I also notice inconsistencies sometimes I get rep from the max level dungeon available to me sometimes I don't, other times I'll get rep from the lower end of the Wrath dungeons and sometimes I dont... seems random at times.

Commenter Rhüarc nailed this one:
The old world tabards (Main Faction city tabards) work in all old world dungeons, all wrath dungeons except those flagged as a lvl 80 dungeon (any wrath dungeons except Occulus, HoL, UP, CoS, ToC, FoS, PoS, HoR), and any pre-85 Cata dungeon (all Cata dungeons except Lost City, HoO, and GB). Wrath faction tabards work in the dungeons flagged as lvl 80 dungeons and Wrath heroics, Cata faction tabards work in Cata dungeons flagged as level 85, and all Cata heroics.
WindSong asked:
Does the Thanksgiving "well-fed" rep buff stack with the guild perk rep gain? 20% extra reputation gains seems too good to be true.
It does indeed stack. I'm not sure whether it's additive or multiplicative, though.
caniacpackkid asked:
How far progressed are most of the writers on this site?
The writers are all at varying levels of progression, from "doesn't PvE all that much" to "regularly downs heroic bosses." Personally, I haven't been a progression raider for a long time, but that's less from a lack of interest and more from a lack of guild and time.
ven asked:
Perhaps I missed it, but do we have an ilevel requirement yet for the raid finder?
Raid Finder requires an average held item level of 365.

Fun note. That scene in Midnight Cowboy was unscripted. The cab in the scene almost did hit Hoffman and his reaction to it all was so good that the director left it in.

Hmmm, i like that 365 limit, its not too high that you CANT get it if you're not a full time raider, and its not too low that you can just stroll in with your alts right away.
Which, when i read it just now, alarmed me and then i remembered that the new 5-mans drop 378 items so my alts will be able to get in soon enough. All my alts are above 360 already but not quite 365.
Edymnion Nov 18th 2011 11:19AM
You forget that the new 5 mans will be dropping ilvl 378 gear. You could get into the new raid finder NOW with a little work, but once the new 5 mans are out everybody will be able to qualify for it quite easily.

I'm pretty sure Cbeefman didn't forget...

Just wanted to point out that crafted PVP gear is getting upped to 377.
Not that I'm endorsing gaming the ilvl check...think of this as more of a cautionary notice. :P

Question for the queue: How do advertisements on wow-related sites work? On this website lately it seems that some political ad is up at the top a lot. What is your stance towards ads like this, and if so do the advertisements fund the website?
Noyou Nov 18th 2011 11:15AM
As long as they aren't popping up in my face, I generally don't notice them. I loathe the ones that get thru my pop up blocker but that doesn't happen to me on this site.
djaevlesjov Nov 18th 2011 5:46PM
Thats GoogleAds my friend, it's displays ads based on whatever keywords you've got stored in your cookies etc
Jamie Nov 18th 2011 11:26AM
I'm pretty sure like with everything outside of the content AOL has priority say on the ads on their sites.
MattKrotzer Nov 18th 2011 11:28AM
Advertisers buy space. Their ads go on the site. ;D
Generally, the advertisers are pretty well coordinated with the demographic, with a lot of gaming-related stuff. Today it's advertising about a HuffPo e-book, which is bound to happen now that AOL and Huffington Post (WoW Insider's owned by AOL) are the same company.
Cheb Nov 18th 2011 11:29AM
If the ads offend you for any reason, you can always download AdBlock and it'll block them. I have it installed, but I whitelist websites I visit on a regular basis. I can't speak specifically to this site, but a lot of sites use the ads to support them so they can keep putting out content and running contests/give-aways.
lownwolf Nov 18th 2011 11:38AM
In terms of online ad space, Google and Facebook are the largest 'sellers' (separately) of ad space. Recent, in the last couple weeks, AOL, Microsoft, and Yahoo have all joined forces to rival the 2 powerhouses. As has already been mentioned, WoW Insider is owned by a subsidiary of AOL so the ad space on the site will likely be able to pull from a larger source of ads, rather than just "BUY WOW GOLD NAO!"
On another note, the current presidential candidates (can you call them that yet? or are the candidate candidates, who knows!) have all been spending record amounts of their advertising budgets on online ads. This will surely effect the ads we are seeing as the archetypal demographic that plays video games is the oft-sought demographic of 'young voters'
TLDR: More ads, new ads, political ads: all makes sense
MattKrotzer Nov 18th 2011 11:46AM
NoScript is another good addon, though it takes a bit more hands-on approach to make sure you're allowing the scripts you want/need for sites, but I very rarely see an advertisement anymore.
Jamie Nov 18th 2011 12:09PM
I highly recommend AdBlock. It's subscription lists mean you'll always avoid ads.

The ads on this site don't bother much. Since they are not in my face pop-up, I tend to ignore them unless something catches my eye.
The ads I hate are ones that pop up (They bypass popup blocker) and ads that appear when you click on a video link on some sites. Those drive me bananas.

Your IP address matters, too: I'm sure Americans don't see the ads of the "beloved" Canadian telecom companies that I do.

Man, I don't know what site you guys that don't mind WI's ads are going to, but it can't be this site. There have been a couple times I've been to WI on a different computer, one that didn't have noscript or ABP, and I gotta say, the ads are horrible. They're incredibly intrusive and all over the place. I don't mind a banner ad on the top and one on the side, but WI has ads inbetween articles and all over the place. That's the kind of thing that doesn't get your site whitelisted.
