Taking a break to write non-schooly stuff may actually be conducive to writing schooly stuff in the near future! It's true! One of my creative writing advisers used to instruct us to "free write" for at least 20min before settling down to actually write, whether it was a story, poem, or even an academic paper. The free write could be on-topic or completely off-topic... Whatever helps your brain rid itself of extraneous stuff so you can focus. So, as far as I'm concerned, you're actually still working on schooly stuff! :)

I took up calling my free writing "brain vomit" or "brain purge." :D
