Two Bosses Enter: Brann Bronzebeard vs. Vereesa Windrunner

The Two Bosses Enter exhibition season continues with a matchup of two Alliance powerhouses duking it out for fame and glory. Brann Bronzebeard, legendary explorer and Old God waker-upper, will put his years of experience running away from and narrowly escaping the horrors of Azeroth to use as he stands short and proud against Vereesa Windrunner, youngest of the Windrunner daughters and perfect with a bow. Which Alliance champion will come out on top?
With a solid first win under her belt, Ishanah of the Aldor kicks Tae'thelan Bloodwatcher back to his dig site in the Badlands, ending his chances for victory in the exhibition season. Readers fondly remembered Ishanah from their Burning Crusade days, pointing to her prominence as one of the naaru's chosen as being instrumental to her win. Plus, I think readers just like her better.
The time has come, adventurers. Who will move on to the next round? Vote! Vote, I say!

The rules of the ring
- The WoW Insider Ring is considered neutral territory, where both combatants are able to access their usual encounter mechanics and abilities. If you can't visualize it inside the squared circle, visualize it someplace else -- but you must take into consideration all of each bosses' abilities and mechanics.
- Assume that each opponent is intelligent and capable of strategic thinking.
- All of the competitors' abilities, including crowd control and other effects to which bosses are usually immune, work on their opponents (with apologies to considerations of lore on this point).
- Assume that the opponents share similar levels, health pools, and comparative overall damage output.
- Don't get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter.
- Don't neglect style, story, and scale. Everything is a factor; seeking balance is your goal as a spectator and judge.

Explorer. Prince. Treasure hunter. Old God bait. What hasn't Brann Bronzebeard accomplished in his life yet? Brann has been around in every recent era of Azeroth, from the first two wars with the Horde all the way to the unveiling of Uldum and the desert's secrets. I remember Brann's stories and jounral entries from the World of Warcraft release, so he's been a staple in the Warcraft universe for a long time.
Brann's travels have brought him all over Azeroth, above and below, inside and outside its most hallowed halls and dangerous places. The youngest of the Bronzebeard brothers, Brann certainly has a way with getting into and then getting out of scrapes with the most powerful beings and entities Azeroth has ever known. Brann keeps going missing, only to turn up again and again against all odds.
Players have also had plenty of interaction with Brann Bronzebeard through the years as he investigated the Qiraji in Ahn'Qiraj, guided players through the Halls of Stone to uncover the Tribunal of Ages, and even bore witness to the horrors of Yogg'Saron. Only with Brann's assistance did players open up the Archivum, defeat Algalon, and stop the world from utter destruction. Brann's wits and intelligence make up for his potential lack of physical prowess.
Here are some cool things about Brann Bronzebeard:
- He's a dwarf. Probably the best Alliance race, no contest.
- He's got a fantastic beard. See above.
- He's a great explorer. He's seen things that you've had to wait to see, always one step ahead of even the greatest adventurers. This guy knows where evil lurks and he is not afraid to throw himself at it, head first.
- He stands his ground. Well, when he isn't standing his ground, he is the best retreater in the history of Azeroth.
- He's Brann. And he's been around forever. He isn't going anywhere.

If you are not sure who Vereesa Windrunner is or what is her relative influence or power level, just read over her last name a few more times. Vereesa is the youngest of the Windrunner daughters and the ranger-general of the Silver Covenant. After Alleria Windrunner went missing after the expedition to Draenor and Sylvanas Windrunner had a little undead accident, Vereesa was the last in the line of Windrunner sisters to stay as a ranger-general. She was best known in World of Warcraft by her presence in Violet Citadel of Dalaran, leading her Silver Covenant against the Lich King.
The Silver Covenant greatly opposed the inclusion of the blood elves into the Kirin Tor, as Vereesa still felt resentment and anger over Kael'thas' treachery and her struggle to retain the cultural traditions of the high elves. Vereesa's first task as a ranger of Silvermoon was to escort Rhonin to Khaz Modan, making her the third Windrunner sister to have the hots for the humans. The Windrunners sure do have a type, don't they?
Most recently, Vereesa Windrunner was asked by Halduron Brightwing, the current ranger-general of Silvermoon and leader of the Farstriders, to come to Silvermoon and assist in the fight against the Zandalari and Amani. While Vereesa still doesn't think too highly of the blood elves, the importance of securing their home against ancient troll enemies weighed heavily in her mind. Lor'themar Theron even sent a messenger to demand explanation for her arrival in Silvermoon but was blocked and ignored by Halduron, who still valued Vereesa's ability.
Here are some cool things about Veressa Windrunner:
- She's a Windrunner. The Windrunner sisters are the best of the best rangers, period.
- She's the last Windrunner not missing or undead. Vereesa is (until Alleria gets back) the last of the old vanguard of high elven rangers.
- She's a dragon slayer. She helped murder Dargonax, one of the most powerful twilight dragons in existence.

Readers have spoken, and the High Priestess of the Aldor has vanquished her first foe, Tae'thelan Bloodwatcher of The Reliquary. Players have fond memories of Ishanah from the Burning Crusade days, when her faction stood fierce against the Burning Legion. Aldor-aligned players were very familiar with Ishanah, as she was instrumental in reputation gains with the Aldor and is portrayed wielding priest-favorite weapon Benediction. Let's here what you had to say about Ishanah's match.
Wolfrunner actually gave this matchup to Tae'thelan, relying on the blood elf's mastery of the arcane and knowledge of ancient relics for a spectacular win against the priestess.
Tae'thelan wandered through the broken world, the place where his Prince had turned to madness. He felt he had to come, he had to see the graveyard of the Sin'Dorei's proudest, to remember lest he fell into the same trap. There were those who said that magic was responsible for Kael's betrayal, that the arcane led its adherents only to corruption and death. But they are wrong. Does one forsake all fire because it can spread from the hearth to scorch the home? Because its warmth can turn to pain? No, just like fire, magic can be mastered, tamed, and though accidents are inevitable, the rewards are truly wonderous. Many readers pointed to Tae'thelan's trickiness and savvy to beat a mild-mannered priestess, but reader Omegan01 does his best to dispel those thoughts. Ishanah wouldn't be mild-mannered or naive in the slightest, especially after decades of fighting demons and running from the biggest evils in the universe.
Tae'thelan felt the hum of power around him, the twisted ley lines of this shattered place. He pulled the relic from his belt. A white wand of wood, carvered in graceful lettering of ancient elvish and decorated with subtle gold leaf. It was his greatest creation, a tool, but a work of art as well. His channeled his power, unleashing the magic within, the wand led him on his path. He was close.
Ishanah stepped out from behind a crumbling pillar. "No further elf, the secrets you seek must remain lost."
Tae'thelan Bloodwatcher tensed. Do they all assume him to be a fool? Can these fanatics not sense their blindness? An elf of his power, education, and intelligence, and they see fit to lecture him on the dangers of magic! Does one lecture the dwarven smith on the dangers of a forge?! "The knowledge within the tome lost here will save lives. It belongs to the Sin'dorei. Our greatest magisters put lifetimes into its creation. Surrender it."
Ishanah bowed her head as furious Light gathered around her. She struck. Tae'thelan's wards shimmered into being, the magic bindings diffusing the holy energy. He flourished his staff, gathered his power and responded.
The battle was long and harsh. Ishanah was chosen by the Light and seemed without weariness. But Tae'thelan had the arcane, with it's infinite complexity and infinite possibility. Bolstering himself with a mana crystal he bound and usurped Ishanah's own attacks, bending them against her. At last she lay still, utterly defeated, as all who denied the Sin'dorei would be.
As he floated above her he was overcome by pity. He could feel the warmth of the Light, but she would never know the wonder of the Arcane. She would never see the beauty of the Universe. Tae'thelan teleported her to her people in Shattarah, then he returned to his introspections and his everlasting search of knowledge.
"Therein lies the problem. Honourable. Opponent."I like the way you think, Omegan01, and that's why readers gave it to Ishanah.
Who says Ishanah would be an honorable opponent?
As you said yourself, this is the woman who spent upwards of four decades fighting fel-addled orcs and the demonic forces of the Legion - a foe HARDLY known for playing fair. That's more than enough time to see a lot of drity tricks and learn a few of your own. Don't forget how the Aldor expected people to show their loyalty - by going out and savaging the Legion forces, bringing back offerings taken from the bodies of the Legion's fallen.
"Is she really going to busting out her full demon-stomping, back-to-the-wall, fleeing-survivors arsenal to teach this scrappy young thing his proper place?"
Uh. Yes? Again, Ishanah and her order fought the Legion with their backs to the metaphorical wall for longer than most WoW players have been alive. These aren't people who fight conservatively - they'll hit hard and brutal, fighting tooth and nail because that's the only thing that kept them alive in the struggle against an ocean of demonic soldiers. Don't forget that it was ONLY the word of the naaru that persuaded the Aldor to let the Scryers into their precious city - and even then they refused to let the Scryers and their allies set foot inside their holy ground.
It takes a lot of cojones to tell the saviors of your race, the avatars of your holy power, that you're going to set conditions on their deal.
I don't think you're overestimating Tae'thelan, but I -do- think you're underestimating Ishanah.
Finally, Sunari commented that they really like the exhibition season so far!
Can I just say that I think this is an awesome idea! A lot of these characters deserve way more spotlight than they are getting currently. Ishanah for instance is probably the 2nd most prominent draenei after Velen and it would be cool for her to get some spotlight soon. I also think it's quite telling that 4! of the participants are blood/high elves. I really hope blizz gives these races some more room in the main story soon!Thank you, Sunari. The aim is to get some of these lesser-known or lesser-seen characters in the spotlight and clue people in to some new lore figures.

If this devolves into a drinking contest, Brann has this in the bag... or mug, rather.
devilsei Nov 21st 2011 5:21PM
A large bag is a Dwarf's mug.

Brann begins the encounter by taking a swig of dwarven ale and loosening his tie. Vereesa takes a sip of wine and waggles her tail suggestively. Brann is nearly entranced but manages to regain his composure and winks at her while removing his muddy boots. She is clearly aroused by this sudden turn of events but turns the tables on the poor dwarf by winking at him twice and scandalously removing her necklace. Brann, not to be outdone takes off his hat and consumes the two flasks of Nethergarde bitter he was hiding within. Vereesa was certainly not prepared for this but recovers quickly by magically summoning a jug of wine and downing it in one quick drought. She follows this up by removing one of her anklets and moaning suggestively. This really gets Brann in the mood so he has no choice but to really up the ante by removing his socks. His lower tenth is completely naked. Vereesa cannot quite take her eyes off his swarthy, hair-covered feet but instead puts out a similar distraction with the provocative removal of her hair ribbons. And then they do it.

Brann will always win because he will always manage to convince at least five adventurers to do all his heavy lifting. Of course, if Vereesa isn't a dungeon boss the odds might even up...
dkhar Nov 21st 2011 4:29PM
In a drinking contest Brann, in the ability to get people to do his dirty work, Brann( for some ungodly reason only known to him, me thinks he has a little 'old god influence' on us).
For sheer awesomeness Vareesa, in the ability to get men to do whatever the hell she want's, Vareesa(come on guy's, you know it to be true!! :) ) In over all power and ability, Vareesa, hands down(just because she seems to care about outcomes more than Brann does).
Winner=Vareesa ;)
Nadia Nov 21st 2011 5:02PM
Sure, Vereesa's an elf, and sure she's pretty. But that doesn't mean she can get a Dwarven man to do whatever she wants. She's not round enough, for one thing. I'd suspect Braan would think she needs a sandwich or 50.
Now her husband, Rhonin, on the other hand is a different story altogether. He's not competing in this contest though...
dkhar Nov 21st 2011 5:57PM
I wouldn't be so sure Nadia, in the books, those Dwarven men have been pretty smitten with ole Vareesa ;)
musicchan Nov 21st 2011 4:31PM
I had to look up the dwarven brothers. The coin for Magni in the Dalaran fountain always made me think HE was the youngest. Now I'm just wondering what the text on the coin means.
Anyway, I totally voted for Brann. I don't have any strong reason for it. I just don't see anyone being able to defeat him.
Zapwidget Nov 21st 2011 4:49PM
"I hope that my father and brothers outlive me. I'll not make much of a king."
I somehow got that impression from somewhere too, but long before the coins were around. Anyway, the coin actually implies that he is first in line of succession, but self doubt weighs heavily upon him, and typical Dwarfish, i guess pragmatism would be the right word, tells him that death is the only way out of Kingship so he hopes to die young rather than fail his family and his nation by being a bad king.
Helston Nov 21st 2011 9:08PM
And boy was his coin horribly true and wonderfully false respectively.
Gordal Nov 21st 2011 4:36PM
Vareesa all the way. Brann's sole method of combat is to unknowingly activate some utter-annihilation-of-the-universe-in-all-directions-of-time-including-sideways superweapon and scream uselessly while five-to-25 adventurers do all the hard work in preventing said superweapon from firing. Even if he does manage to land a solid attack on his opponent, the utter extermination of all that has ever existed and will exist will render any confrontation a tie.
All Windrunner has to do is auto-attack. Scratch one for the elf.

Vareesa followed Brann into the Arena.
Okay missy, we know there's a vast underground city under this tournament ground. The Liche King himself tried to use it to kill the Champions that eventually kill 'im. Let's see...
"Aren't I supposed to kill you Brann?"
Aye lassie, but that can wait. There's treasure to be found. 'ere we go.
The floor collapsed and both fell into icy water.
Come on, then. Let's see, LOOK AT DAT! This is a rare Nerubian Cursed Rod of Torment. It is said just Touching this makes anyone not Nerubian suffer an agonizing and painful death! 'Ere hold this.
Brann casually uses a stick to toss it to Vareesa who catches it and then convulses for several minutes in soundless agony before she stops twitching and lays still. Brann keeps reading the writing on the wall nearby...
devilsei Nov 21st 2011 5:18PM
Aye, just imagine all the horrific things Brann will find and inadvertently beat Vereesa with.
That rod of torment? He finds ten a day!
Let me tell you what he'll find in the Arena ALONE!
20 Rods of Torment
100 Cursed Coins of C'thun's Cramping Calluses.
69 Rune-etched Necklaces of Scale-itch Wards: *Warning: Exposure to non-scaled organisms results in fatal growth of flesh-itch.*
9001 Goblin-made Plastique Explosives, or what they lovingly called "The Wrathgate's Key".

The dwarf who has mapped countless continents of Azeroth, Brann Bronzebeard finds himself in another sticky situation. "Me head, Wha was in that ale...." the fun sized explorer announced as he righted himself picking up his hat from the ground and placing it on his head. No sooner had he dons so than an arrow pierced the leathery companion pinning it to the wall of the Colosseum Brann found himself in. "wha in the blue blazes whas tha!" The dwarf wheeled around just in time to dodge another silver tipped arrow fired from a cloaked figure. "Aye, Lass, ye not wantin ta be doin this!" as the dwarf pulled a mining pick from a sheath on his back. As the figure stood there silently drawing back on her bow Brann simply sighed "Well ok, Ye want to play hard ball, eh?, good cause thats just my kinda game!". As the arrow sliced through the air of the collosiem headed right for Brann, the dwarf pulled a small stone tablet from his waistband and deflected the arrow. Leaping like a spring loaded jackrabbit Brann dove towards his mysterious attacker first with a heel kick which was blocked by figures bow. Useing the momentum of his pick axe he swong not only snagging the cloak of the attacker but launching himself a safer distance from the woman. "Wait jus a second i know ye, yer Rhonins lass, what are ya doing here?" asked the explorer. "well...isn't it obvious, I'm killing you!" the elf shouted launching three arrows simultaneously. Just like that all three arrows made contact, but to the suprise of the elf bounced off the Dwarfs now rock like skin, "Ye didna expect it ta be tha easy did ya lass?" Brann responded by taking a trinket out from one of his satchels. The figure looked like a small golem, placeing it on the gorund it began to grow to ten feet high placeing Brann on its shoulder. "Picked this little lad up in Ulduar!" as the golem raised its hand cannon firing a motlen ball of iron at the lith elf. An explosion rang out as dust and stone exploded in every direction. "was that suppose to hit me you senile old dwarf!" the ranger shouted. "It was na supose ta hit ye!" he exclaimed as Veressa noticed a small stone scarab clinging to her back. Before she could speak hundreds of thousands of small stone scarabs crawled from the impact area engulfing the elf head to toe in a sea of grinding stone insects. In a few seconds nothing was left and the scarabs disintegrated to sand. "Ye never know what mysterious things are buried in our world" said the Dwarf victorious.
DeathPaladin Nov 21st 2011 4:45PM
Vereesa is a dragonslayer, huh? That's great, except for the fact that Brann is not a dragon.
And for someone as indestructible as Brann, such distinctions are important.
anuillae Nov 21st 2011 5:54PM
Definitely Vereesa here. While Brann has, undoubtably, had more experience with old gods and powerful goolies, he never actually *fought* them himself. We find him stealthed in many dungeons, following us in others, and running away like heck in the Ulduar trailer.
Now, it is true to say that Brann has survived by running away in the past. However, the tournament area is a ring. This means that there can be two possibilities;
a) Vereesa stands in the middle of the ring while Brann runs in circles around the outside. She shoots him. One dead dwarf.
b) Vereesa stands by the door (or at some other point on the ring's circle) and Brann runs away from her. When he gets to the far side of the ring, he can either keep going (in which case he will run straight back to her) or he can stop. Either way, he makes a pretty good target for Vereesa.
So yeah. A summary; Brann can run, but not very far. Vereesa can shoot him.
fallemwarrior Nov 21st 2011 6:19PM
I need to be the one to say it...
An elf could never sneak up on a dwarf
icepyro Nov 21st 2011 6:27PM
Brann never fights his own fights. If it wasn't for Camouflage, he would never live to be anywhere in any dungeon or quest we have seen him in. He opens doors and hacks computer systems, but they are not his own systems, so he won't have anything to bumble and force her to fight something else while he tries to bypass it.
Vareesa is not the kind of elf to lift a finger to help him, so she would also not lift some rare cursed artifact to get herself in trouble. As long as she doesn't get tricked into playing his rules ("Oh, let's go explore this instead of fight" or "Let's have a drinking contest instead of fight") then she wins. I don't see any other way about it.
Saf Nov 21st 2011 7:05PM
Brann walked slowly into the arena, looking around at the intricate designs and structure.
“Oh… I see now… So, that’s how it works…”
Vareesa stood at the other end of the arena, with her hand on her hip, waiting impatiently.
“Stop gawking at the architecture Brann, our match-up is on a schedule you know.”
“Oh, right. Well, let’s get to it then.”
As Vareesa pulled out her bow, Brann pulled out an Extinct Turtle Shell and a Scimitar of the Sirocco.
“Right, before we begin, do ya’ mind if I have a drink?” Brann asked.
“…no, go ahead…” Varessa answered with a quizzical look on her face.
As he took a swig of his Vrykul Drinking Horn, he grew by about 50%, and charged.
Initially stunned by Brann’s sudden attack, Vareesa had to quickly jump out of the way of Brann’s charge before she could take a shot from her bow. She then began strafing Brann, shooting and running at once, in an attempt to keep her distance from his assault.
However, Brann was able to keep up a steady pace due to his increased size, and was blocking most of her shots with the turtle shell. So, she decided to chance tactics and drop a freezing trap.
While Brann did run into the trap and get frozen; before Vareesa could fully use the delay to get distance, Brann turned into a wisp and floated right out of the trap!
“What!? How can a dwarf become a Wisp?”
“When you’re a world-renowned Archeologist, you can find items of great power, such as the Wisp Amulet.”
Vareesa glared at him, and waited for him to return to his former, dwarven, shape.
Once he had done so, he knelt down, and began working with something at his feet.
“What are you tinkering with now Brann?” Vareesa asked as she readied her next shot.
“Oh, just a little Eldritch magic… By the way, were you aware that raptors had even sharper teeth in ancient times? Here, I’ll let you see.” As he finished his sentence, he threw a collection of bones towards Vareesa. As they flew, they rotated around themselves until they formed a full-sized Fossilized Raptor mount that was charging straight for her!
Her eyes went wide as she leapt out of the way of the living fossil, and with her attention focused on taking it down, Brann ran off to a different area of the arena, burying a small gem. With the struggle she was having taking out the Raptor, Brann stealthily walked around the edge of the arena until Vareesa was between him and the gem.
With one final shot, the fossil collapsed into a pile of bones and Vareesa turned her attention back to Brann. “Now, where were we?”
“I was just about to cut you.” He stated flatly as he put his sword and shield away, and pulled out Zin’Rohk, Destroyer of Worlds. “Ya’ know what weapon THIS is, don’t ya’?”
“Zin’Rohk! You wouldn’t…”
“Oh, aye! Now, CHAAAARGE!!!”
As he ran head-long towards her, she instinctively jumped backwards, landing right on the gem Brann had buried earlier. With the impact, she felt something hard and sticky immediately start to grow up her leg. In alarm, she looked down and saw a transparent orange crystal begin to encase her legs and torso. “Brann! What is this!?! What’s happening!?!”
“Oh, don’t worry, no permanent harm will be done ta’ ya’. It’s only some Ancient Amber. It’s just my way ‘o’ winnin’ without killin’ ya’.
“That’s not—“ Her words were cut off as the amber finished covering her mouth and head, leaving only her eyes free to move within the crystal. As Brann bowed to the audience, some Coliseum workers came in to haul her away.
