Addon Spotlight: Mailbag 4

Addon Spotlight is here on Thanksgiving to wish all celebrating a happy time with your families or food or both. I am going to eat myself stupid and worry about the consequences later. Until then, you all have sent in many questions about addons or looking for specific addons, so maybe it's time to clear out my old Addon Mailbag. If you'd like to send me a question about an addon, it's a very easy thing to do. Send all emails to mat@wowinsider.com, and have a little something about addons in the subject line -- it helps tremendously with the sorting.
Minimap hell
Our first email comes from Drasu, and he is sick and tired of all those damn minimap buttons getting in the way. Those minimap buttons can get out of hand very quickly, especially when you go on an addon-installing bender late at night, not thinking straight, and you wake up with a mess of a minimap. Let's see if we can help the poor guy out.
Thanks for the email, Drasu. You have the same concern out there as so many people, man. Those minimap buttons pile up, stack on top of each other, and force you to drag and move everything in order to get to the one little circle you need. It's a pain in the butt, truly. I've got two options for you to help you with your minimap button troubles.Hey Mat,
Love your Addon articles.
One thing that I am desperately looking for is an addon that does one thing and one thing only: manage my mini-map buttons. Even after shutting off my non-essential mini-map buttons, I find it very difficult to manage the Blizzard default buttons and the remaining addon buttons without them overlapping or completely hiding one another. Any suggestions?
Drasu from Kael'thas
The first option is to use an addon like Sexymap, which will allow you to turn on or off pretty much every button on the map. Letting Sexymap take control of your minimap buttons is a great way to get rid of the things you just don't need or can't find a way to get rid of. I use Sexymap primarily to get rid of all the extra minimap buttons from addons that have easy-to-remember slash commands or that obnoxiously place themselves over my important buttons. As for the Blizzard default buttons, I've always left them toward the top of the minimap and relegate addon-provided minimap buttons to the bottom. If that's not a compelling enough solution, move on to option #2.
The second option is to grab an addon called Minimap Button Frame, which is absolutely awesome. Minimap Button Frame grabs all of your minimap buttons and moves them to their own happy frame where they can live in peace and harmony -- and, most importantly, away from your minimap. You can set the addon to only show the buttons you want, as well as sort with multiple presets or make your own. There is even LDB support if you like using a Broker bar for other addons. I am a huge fan of Minimap Button Frame and hope it helps everyone out there with out of control minimap buttons.

A better vendor experience
Our next question comes from Josh, who did not leave a character name in his email, so I'm going to assume he is Josh the tauren hunter. Josh Thunderhoof. Josh Thunderhoof of the Mulgore Thunderhoofs wants to know if there are any vendor addons out there that can sort vendor gear.
Mat,Thanks for the email, proud, brave Josh Thunderhoof of the Mulgore Thunderhoofs. I was hesitant to recommend this addon for a while, but it appears that most of the bugs were taken out, so here goes. GnomishVendorShrinker is a wonderful addon that turns your vendor listings into scrolling text rather than icons for items that are spread across lots of pages. Tekkub, one of my favorite addon authors, is the mastermind in charge of GnomishVendorShrinker, and while it doesn't do exactly what you want (sort for plate, etc.), it might help put you on the right path.
I was wondering if you know of any addons that can help with sorting/removing items listed in Vendors. I recently hit 85 on my Warrior, and when I go to buy JP gear, I have to scroll through so many pages of AGI leather and SPI gear that I am not interested in. Do you know of an addon that will cause vendors to only list gear that I want ie. only Plate gear, or items with STR?
Love the columns, keep up the great work.
Thanks,
Josh
It just so happens that the right path is right here: GoblinVendorFilter. This addon works so wonderfully in tandem with GnomishVendorShrinker that they are practically made for each other. GoblinVendorFilter adds a filter button to your vendor windows, allowing you to sort the items in a vendor's stock by item type, item stats, where it equips, and more. You'll have to reset the filter each time you visit the vendor, but it isn't too much of a big deal.
These two addons make the vendor experience in WoW much, much better and allow you to easily sort and list the items each vendor has for sale. Obviously it is most useful on the justice and valor point vendors, as they have a multitude of different types of armors on them for purchase. In any case, I hope these two addons help you out in these troubling, sorting times.

A brief guide on getting ready for patch 4.3
Finally, there is the potential for patch 4.3 to drop on Tuesday, Nov. 29, so I wanted everyone to be ready for that potential drop date. Is your interface folder ready to survive the patch? Here's a quick list of things you should do before Tuesday, just in case:
- Back up your interface folders. Copy your interface and WTF folder in the WoW directory somewhere safe outside of the WoW directory itself. Just make a folder somewhere on your hard drive called WoW Interface Backups and copy and paste in your interface and WTF folders. Don't move anything -- just copy. Backups are always good to have.
- Update all of your addons to alpha or beta versions. Many addons allow you to download alphe or beta versions that aren't release versions but have been tinkered with and made ready on the PTR for the next patch. Sometimes you won't have to update after the patch drops.
- On patch day, remember to hit "Load out-of-date addons." Loading out-of-date addons is a big deal. Some might still work; others might fall apart. Hitting this button in the addons menu on the character select screen might solve more problems than you think.

Question! I'm about to take over raid leadership for my team, and while I'm obvs. psyched, I also nervous about the very likely possibility that I'll screw up. What add-ons would you guys say are raid leader necessities? I've got the standard Skada/DBM/GTFO suite, but I guess I'm looking more specifically for add-ons that'll help me keep tabs on my teammates. Maybe something that tells me when my healers' CDs are up, or informs me the cause of raider death? Can I configure Power Auras to do that? Thanks in advance, guys!

Firstly, good luck :D
I wouldn't worry too much about anything,if your team hasn't had too much trouble in the past, they're not going to run into too much trouble in the future!
If you've not already got one, I recommend using a raid frame addon like Grid. You can make it nice and small, and you'll see in your peripheral vision if someone dies.
You can also configure DBM to show other peoples cool downs. I have mine set to tw/hero and every combat ress, but you'll have to look into other cool downs as well if you need more.
You can also get an addon to provide small icons you can click to mark/unmark targets, and drop world markers. I forget what it's called but it's extremely helpful!

Well, for cause of death(s), recount usually works well. If you're not devoted to Skada, it might work for damage as well and you can combine uses. Just change to Deaths and click someone for details. Sometimes it will show an obvious cause (aka "Fire of Doom" 200,000 damage). I'm sure others have standalone death monitor suggestions, too.
DBM Spelltimers adds on to DBM most important raid cooldowns and you can filter to just show what matters to you. You'll see things like battle res and heroism cooldowns with your normal boss abilities and cooldowns.
Otherwise, have you tried something like Raid Buff Status (can be pared way down), PhoenixStyle/ Raid Slack Check or Raid Checklist? They each do slightly different things and there are other options for them, too, but something to show you who's flasked, buffed, what buffs are missing, how to get them, etc can really be a big help.

I will second the oRA3 recommendation. I couldn't live without it, specially the cooldown monitor.
Having some dedicated frames can help also. You raidframes might have them already. I use XPerl RaidFrames for this (I only have 5 XPerl modules enables, and that is including the options one).
Picking a good raidframe is also important, since you will need to keep an eye on everything that is happening.

Also, for easy viewing, I would recommend EnsidiaFails. It can call out whenever someone fails at pretty much anything. However, I would recommend changing the defaults so that it doesn't yell everyone's failures at them, instead just have it show you the data personally at the end of the encounter, so if anyone is failing at something in particular, you can point it out to them privately.

I know recount has the Death tab but I think Obituary is much better, as it outputs who died, from what, at the exact moment into your chat pane. Saves time scrolling through all the recount tabs and is much simpler.
A good buff (and more) reminder is Cork. I mainly use it to remind myself when I haven't buffed, eaten buff food, shucked clams, combined leather scraps, etc.
You can get them both at Curse.

Thanks everybody! Definitely going to have to try those out. I'll admit I've always been a little daunted by XPerl, though; I use Vuhdo with my healer precisely because it's so easy to configure. Is XPerl much harder to pick up than Vuhdo?
Fount Nov 25th 2011 3:28AM
Vuhdo will work just as well, so long as you have a good raid frame addon that you're comfortable with.
I'd like to throw in a vote for ora3, Pheonix style and Recount deaths. I like ZOMGbuffs for buff checking, plenty of choices for this, just the one I use.
I'd also throw in raidcomp for... you guessed it, setting up raid lineups, it checks raid buff coverage and helps keep track of people's offspecs.
You'll also want to get used to setting up macro's with raid strategy assignments. You may be able to explain 9 or 24 different assignments over vent, but it's a lot easier to just have a macro with people's assignments that you can adjust and respam.
As for cooldown tracking, this is a problem I've still not solved myself. I want something that tells me the list of cooldowns still available to me, not the ones that are on cooldown. I don't want to look down to call a battle rez and need to work out which druid isn't there, I just want the list of druids still available, and maybe the CD of the first one coming off CD. I don't want to call for a healer cooldown and have to work out which isn't on the ora3 list, I just want the list of available spells available.
Would appreciate any help on that one if anyone knows a solution.

For repeating blocks of text, look into announceit

I can vouch for GoblinVendorFilter. It is an amazing addon and it falls in the 'i cannot play wow without it' category along with staples like Postal and Auctionator. Sorting through 11 pages of vendor goods to find my Enhance Shammy's sweet tier gear sucks. With GVF, all I do is click mail>agility and BAM! There's my gear! It also has an 'affordable' filter that takes account of how many CPs, VPs, etc and shows what you can buy right now! Do not hesitate and go get this super-awesome addon right now. Happy Thanksgiving!

Also, mimimap button bag, I like a lot

I have been using MBB for quite a few years now.
Love it.

Would you recommend deleting the cache as well once 4.3 drops? I usually do just incase but would like to know if it actually does anything or not.
LynMars Nov 24th 2011 10:23PM
I put a lot of my addon buttons on Titanpanel. I like the slim bar at the top with quick view info, and it can dock a lot of my addons, keeping my minimap clean.
Mahram Nov 25th 2011 12:28AM
GoblinVendorFilter where have you been all my life? Can I marry you? Why are you not part of the default interface?
Nathanyel Nov 25th 2011 4:06AM
Also note that every client patch disables "Load out-of-date addons". I notice this mostly for PTR builds, but it can be annoying on Live updates, too, if you forget about it :P

Raid Buff Status - 'nuff said.

And ofc this should have been directed @Monotype. :)

I would kill for a replacement for aperture or ct_viewport.
