Spiritual Guidance: New patch 4.3 shadow priest gear

Gear. It makes the world go round. And though we like to say that we mess around in heroics and raids for the thrill of victory, let's face it -- if we didn't get those shiny new purples, we wouldn't obsess over victory so much.
If such virtual treasure fuels you, today's column is for you. Whether you prefer to run the new 5-man heroics, mess around in the Raid Finder, or even just shop around on the Auction House, there's some terrific new gear out there.
Stat weights stay level
For the most part, stat weightings are going to be unchanged from patch 4.2 to the current patch 4.3. This is because there were no real changes to shadow priest mechanics. The only change to shadow priests in 4.3 is an increase in the stats on new gear and our two-piece and four-piece tier bonus.
Hot new 5-man gear
Everything in the new instances is ilevel 378, putting it on par with the gear that drops in Firelands normal modes. You won't be able to find gear for every slot, but you can fill the rest of those slots with i378s using the justice points.
Weapons
- Jaina's Staff, a two-handed staff with crit and mastery, drops off Echo of Jaina in End Time.
- Stalk of Corruption, a two-handed staff with haste and mastery, drops off Archbishop Benedictus in HoT.
- Fanged Tentacle, a one-handed dagger with hit and crit, also drops off Archbishop Benedictus.
- Scepter of Azshara, a one-handed mace with spirit and crit, drops off Queen Azshara in the Well of Eternity.
- Orb of the First Satyrs, with hit and haste, drops off Peroth'arn in WoE.
- Cowl of Highborn Sorcerors, with crit and mastery, drops off Mannoroth and Varo'then in WoE.
- Mantle of Time, with spirit and haste, drops off Murozond in End Time.
- Mantle of False Virtue, with hit and mastery, drops off Archbishop Benedictus in HoT.
- Cloak of Subtle Light, with spirit and mastery, drops off Asira Dawnslayer in HoT.
- Robes of Fate, with hit and crit, drops off Murozond in End Time.
- Whisperwind Robes, with spirit and mastery, drops off Echo of Tyrande in End Time
- Chillbane Belt, a waist piece with hit and mastery, drops off Arcurion in HoT.
- Time Traveler's Leggings, a pair of legs with haste and crit, drops off all the Echos.
- Slippers of Wizardry, boots with hit and haste, drop off Queen Azshara in WoE.
- Horned Band, a ring with haste and crit, drops off Peroth'arn in WoE.
- Foul Gift of the Demon Lord, a trinket with 383 intellect and a mastery proc, drops off Mannoroth and Varo'then in WoE.

All of the following gear is found in the new Dragon Soul raid. People who use the Raid Finder will be getting i384 gear, slightly better than most Firelands gear and on par with the stuff that drop from Ragnaros. The regular version of the raid drops i397 versions; the heroic version drops i410.
A large number of slots only have one option for cloth wearers. That makes gearing a lot easier -- how can you choose incorrectly when there's no choice to be had? -- but disappoints the old Fox, who used to love sifting through gear lists.
Even though your choices are limited, don't worry too much if you have trouble scoring one of these drops from your usual raid group. You'll have two shots a week at all this gear if you choose to use the Raid Finder tool. And further, you'll be able to buy gear with the valor points you earn.
Your best-in-slot pieces are in bold below. (It's too early to theorycraft the Deathwing weapons.) Note that a non-bolded piece with a higher item level is likely a better choice than a bolded piece of a lower item level.

This is a very sexy article format. I wish they did this for every spec/class when new patches drop.

Excuse me for being totally out of the loop (I'm blaming the turkey), but why is it too early to consider the Deathwing weapons? Are the stats/procs so unusual existing mathematics can't handle them?
Rhüarc Nov 30th 2011 3:52PM
The second half of the raid won't be released until next week at the earliest. No point in considering what isn't even available yet.
Prissa Nov 30th 2011 5:03PM
It's too early not because the raid hasn't been released (our server already has 8/8 guild) but because there wouldn't really be any around for people to have done a decent amount of theory crafting with them. Once they drop for more guilds, the math will be done, then the rest of us mere mortals will have a good guide to use :P

I have a question, How important are our set bonuses? What I mean is should I get my 2 or 4-set off of the raid finder gear over the higher ilvl vp pieces?
GerardthePriest Nov 30th 2011 3:42PM
I've taken a bit of a break from the game but still read WoW Insider, and I'm a little excited about the profusion of Intellect gem socket bonuses. Has this been commented on much? It's great that, at least for items with 2+ sockets, Blizz is finally making people pay attention to socket color a little instead of uniformly socketing red intellect (or agi or str) gems. Why even have gems at that point?

I managed to get the Raid Finder version of the Mosswrought Shoulderguards yesterday in a very, very smooth LFR group. As I still has 359 shoulders (Firelands has not been kind to me - and I still don't have my legendary) I was very happy for the upgrade!
Z Nov 30th 2011 5:10PM
Fox, you forgot the Sash of Relentless Truth, which is a BoE Trash drop and a nice option with its Mastery and Haste.
zomby_wc3 Nov 30th 2011 8:01PM
You also forgot to mention [Lightning Rod] which drops off Hagara.
Z Nov 30th 2011 5:14PM
Another thing: doesn't the stat priorities remain Haste > Hit to cap > Mastery > Crit?
In that case, I would prefer Spirit/Haste and Hit/Haste items over Haste/Mastery as you post. It's only a minor difference I believe, but I feel that way you'll be more flexible with maximizing Haste, getting hitcapped and then reforge everything else into Mastery.
Or is my reasoning off?
Zaet Nov 30th 2011 5:18PM
Way off
hit to cap its always priority
Z Nov 30th 2011 5:53PM
Actually Zeat, it is not. In all Cataclysm content Haste has added more DPS than equal amount of Hit/Spirit. Especially in T11 this was important because you needed to make sacrifices to get hitcapped. However with current gear levels, it's pretty straightforward to get hitcapped and most shadowpriests choose this, even if you could get more haste instead.
However, purely based on numbers Haste still adds more DPS than Hit/Spirit. Therefore Haste is your best secondary stat at least until T13 heroic modes (not sure about 410 iLVL).

Are raid finder trinkets better than DMC:V? especialy the cunnig of the cruel raid finder mode.
Z Nov 30th 2011 6:01PM
Zaet, Cunning of the Cruel is very fight dependent. With a lot of adds I assume it can be amazing and out-perform DMC:V. However, for single target fights it looks like DMC:V sims better than the RF version of CotC.
All other new 384-and-up caster trinkets seem to be better than DMC:V though.

Tyrael's Charger + Shadowform = Purest Win
zomby_wc3 Nov 30th 2011 7:59PM
Tyraels Charger + Disgusting Oozeling = win. You dont see many green chargers around.

Hey Fox,
What happened to the Glyph of Shadow?
Desmentia Dec 2nd 2011 3:48AM
Not to dispute your accepted stat weights, but my sims indicate that crit is more valuable than mastery, unless the mastery is in proc form (you can "game" mastery procs to gain their benefit for up to an extra 15 seconds per proc, possibly leading to very high uptimes.)
I do agree that haste is the king of all secondary stats, even more so than spirit/hit, however.
Spirit/hit's value of course depends on how quickly you notice missed DoT casts. My analysis was based on a 5 second delay in re-casting a missed DoT.

Hey, just a quick gear question...
Foul Gift of the Demon Lord , Fiery quintessence and Necromantic focus... all 378 for a spriest... Which two would you use, please?
