Archaeology can be one of the most frustrating experiences in the game. You spend hours digging around in the ground, desperately searching for just the right relics to create cool in-game items. No guarantee exists that you'll ever get the stuff you want, but you just keep plugging away ... and away ... and digging for what feels like forever.
It's no surprise that someone would create a song about that frustration. The Archaeology Song is a ballad of hatred and remorse, dedicated to the endless hours spent swinging a pike at the dirt. Fjofjo did a good job of making the song ironic. It sounds like a dirge of tears, but it's pretty clear Fjofjo loves the game. The real-life costume is suitably hilarious, and the whole thing comes together well.
Good luck out there, archaeologists. Indiana would be proud! Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at moviewatch@wowinsider.com.
That was actually really cute, especially because Tyrande's Stupid Doll is something that I NEVER EVER got. Just wish he would have used a little less autotuning!
Awesome! I'm the guy who filmed a bunch of it in-game for fjo (Zerzhul/Zereaver). I'll have to make sure he knows this is being featured. It was so much fun doing this with him. Been playing together since 2005.
Archaeology was my biggest disappointment in Cataclysm. When it was first announced, it sounded so great -- there would be questlines, puzzles, and alternate progression through the "Path of the Titans" -- we would be like Indiana Jones.
Instead, we got hours of flying up and down, sticking a surveyor in the ground occasionally, and then running in the wrong direction because the damn thing never points the right way. On top of that, the tier 11 BiS for a ret pally was the troll 2-hander, so you felt like you were required to keep searching for the damned thing.
And instead of feeling like Indiana Jones, they turned half of Uldum into an Indiana Jones parody. Not the same thing at all.
That was really well done. Catchy song and some great footage too. At the end when she fell out of the sky with wings it looked awesome.
I can't believe I'm saying this but it made me want to level Archaeology. I'm STILL sitting at 1 point saying I'll start leveling arch "tomorrow" really I will! ^^ (And I love to collect "junk" and weird items so likely I know I'll just become way too obsessed with finding a certain trinket like our poor friend in the video!).
The falling portion was by far the most fun to film. Seeing how well it turned out (the best part of in-game shots imo) was fantastic when he finished editing it.

Indiana would have taken one look at WoW's boringly-broken version of archaelogy, snorted in derision, and gone off somewhere to find a bottle of whiskey and a hot babe.
As soon as he said Night Elf trinket I almost died. I have been searching for that damn thing for SO LONG... Two characters to 525 archaeology, both have made every Night Elf artifact except for that damn trinket...
Nice. The buff this patch that increases the number of fragments you get may make your blues SLIGHTLY less. Though I wouldn't bet we wont still be singing this song.
That was one of the last things we did on the project. We had taken a break from filming stuff, then came back to it way later and Fjo had the idea to do that part. We spent a good part of an evening on it. Looking at that, then some of the other stuff we did, I wish we had enough time to go back and re-do some of the other ideas since we had learned a lot about what we were doing as we did it. Recording in-game shots was a first for me, so there were plenty of mistakes on my end. I thought Fjo did a great job of editing some of the less stellar shots into some pretty good sections regardless.

Only way to make that falling bit better would have been to have several of names of the arch items float by ala Colbert's intro.

How awesome. Makes me wish I'd spent time on Archaeology O_O
Haven't bothered with it at all! I just haven't had enough time to deal with it, though I do play WoW a fair bit 0_O

To be fair Indy is more of a treasure hunter with an encycoledic knowledge of artifacts than an Archeologist.
Silversol Nov 30th 2011 3:47PM
Maybe he was referring to the state of Indiana?

i wasn't on board with this until that "falling" shot. that was some epic filming there, and worth watching the whole thing for just that alone.
