nice. i've been considering purchasing Dominion, but might have to check this out instead. as a fan of some other rather fringe games (Catan, Puerto Rico, etc), I've heard good things about the deck-building genre, and Dominion in particular. anyone have any experience playing it, and can give me a thumbs up or thumbs down on it (or perhaps recommend other similar board games)?

I love Dominion. Haven't played in a while, but it's always been great fun.
I have a background going back to high school in card games - starting with Magic, moving to SW:CCG and then LOTR, and on to a few others - Wars and VS, mainly. So - obviously I have an affinity for the card games. Take that information as you will, then, when I say that I would recommend it - just start with the base set, it shouldn't set you back too much. You can branch into expansions later, if you're so inclined.

My wife is a Dominion fan. I've played against her a few times and been roundly thrashed. :)
It's a great game, and even the basic set has a kajillion different variants. Highly recommended.
