Maintenance extended until 2:00 p.m. PST

We recommend catching an episode of Community on Hulu while waiting for the realms to come back up. Actually, we don't -- I do. Hopefully, this makes up for the terrible faux pas I made in The Queue today.
We'll update this post with any additional information we come across. Otherwise, just hang tight!
Update: 1:00 p.m. PST -- Maintenance extended until 2 p.m. PST.
10:10 a.m. PST - We will be extending the regularly scheduled maintenance time in order to perform additional database checks. We anticipate all realms will be available at approximately 1:00 p.m. PST.

All the more reason to move maintenance to the middle of the night.

I wonder if Greg Street and Chris Metzen are the Abed and Troy of Blizzard....

Over the years, the lack of regular maintainence, and downtime has gotten me worried.
At one point, when they tried skipping regular maintainence and just did server restarts, it almost always meant a week or two later they needed to do extended maintainence. They then stopped doing just server restarts, and did regular maintainence.
I know they have gotten better with maintainence, and not needing server downtime like they used to, but it still seems odd when they go week after week without it.
It was like this, for the people who weren't around then. "Hey, we're doing server restarts this week, no downtime!", (a week later) "Oops, we need extended downtime to fix a problem."
So seeing server restarts-only could get you worried when this kept happening. Seeing so many maintainence days now going by with just server restarts makes it seem a little odd, remembering how it used to be.

'back in the day" i was used to maintenance. but i got spoiled by the new restarts. kinda bummed today.
i agree with you, but now id just like them to put that message on the log in screen up the day before.
too much?

Could be something to do with Blizzards' contracting of new data centers (better tech, etc), at least in the US. They made the move near the end of 2010, just before Cata came out. Cata has been pretty maintenance-lite, as opposed to maintenance-heavy during Wrath.

I know it's an improvement of maintainence.
What I am saying is, after years of skipping normal maintainence and doing restarts-only meaning that within a couple of weeks you were doing extended downtime anyway, it seems odd that restarta are the norm.

Let's see...they're starting a new arena season, activating heroic DS, bringing Madness of Deathwing to the LFR, starting up the Brazilian servers, and dealing with the usual mess of bugs and errors that comes from a patch today.
The great surprise would have been coming up on time.
Bowfinger Dec 6th 2011 3:48PM
Yet knowing this, Blizzard still gave an overly-optimistic availability estimate. It's not the length of the maintenance, it's the failure to accurately assess the scope and impact of their change activities. It's unprofessional and it's poor customer service.

I just hope they fix the mature language filter bug. Tired of seeing @#$% on my screen, then having to go reset it. On all 10 toons. I don't swear a lot, but when I do, I like to see it :p @#$%.

Does "additional database checks" equal searching for lfr cheaters?
REDMJOEL Dec 6th 2011 2:29PM
That can be done while the game is online.

Looks like it takes longer to take away gear then to get it :)

@highfive
It is always better to give, than to receive ;-)
I'm sure that's not what the top guilds are thinking right now, though.
