Guide to the new Darkmoon Faire

If you're as confused as I was, I hope the information past the cut is helpful. How long will it take you get all the pets and mounts? How do you cheese Blastenheimer Bullseye? And how the hell did Corki manage to get himself captured by a bunch of carnies?
I'm lying about that last bit. I have no idea why Corki's part of the zoo, and I have no intention of springing him again. Ever.

As with its older version, the new Darkmoon Faire runs for one week from the first Sunday of each month.
How do I get there?
While the Faire is active, a portal will appear in both Mulgore and Elwynn Forest where the Faire itself used to be staged. If you're not familiar with the previous location of the Darkmoon Faire, it's easy to find:
- Elwynn Forest Just south of Goldshire
- Mulgore Southwest of Thunder Bluff
What can I get from the Faire?
Heirloom gear, noncombat pets, mounts, and vanity items. The profession quests also award skill-ups. Of note here is that the vanity items include replicas of the old dungeon sets from classic WoW for transmogrification.
That heirloom items are available with Darkmoon Prize Tickets is especially interesting, as it means that even new players on their first toons will be able to get heirlooms while leveling (albeit in a more restricted manner than a level-capped player can).
How do I buy the new Darkmoon items?
The Faire offers both weekly and daily quests that award Darkmoon Prize Tickets, a currency used to purchase items.
How many tickets can I get in a week?
You're functionally capped at 145 Prize Tickets per week. The six new pets all cost 90 tickets each, and the two new mounts cost 180 tickets each.
How long will it take to get the pets and mounts?
Assuming you want all the pets and mounts, you'll need at least seven Darkmoon Faires (i.e., seven months) to afford them all. Budget more, obviously, for any vanity items you might want.
What's this Darkmoon Adventurer's Guide that I'm given?
The Darkmoon Adventurer's Guide is an item that allows you to loot Darkmoon artifacts from player corpses in battlegrounds or 5-man, heroic, and raid bosses. The artifacts reward you with additional tickets once turned in at the Faire.
If you take the breadcrumb quest to get to the Faire, you'll be given one at the end of the quest. If, like me, your main can't get this quest, you can still pick up the Guide from Selina Dourman.
Having carried the Guide on a tanking druid for several days now, it's my impression that the Darkmoon artifacts are not a common drop, at least in 5-mans. I've killed the bosses in the new 5-mans many a time and seen an artifact drop exactly once. However, Blizzard confirmed earlier that you can continue to loot Darkmoon artifacts even while the Faire isn't on, so it might be worth keeping the Guide in your pack between Faires. In addition, the artifacts are tradeable, and if you're really desperate for a particular one (e.g., you hate PvP and wouldn't ordinarily have access to the battlefield artifacts), keep checking the Auction House.
Collecting all the Darkmoon artifacts rewards the achievement Darkmoon Despoiler (see below).
New Darkmoon Faire achievements
The Darkmoon Faire gets its own subheading under the World Events section of your achievements tab. While a full guide will have to wait for OverAchiever to tackle it, these are all of the achievements present as of patch 4.3:
- Blastenheimer Bullseye This may be bugged for certain racial models, although several people have said that jumping in the center of the bullseye immediately after landing seems to work.
- Come One, Come All! You should get this immediately while porting to the Faire for the first time.
- Darkmoon Defender You'll have to have the Adventurer's Guide in your packs and loot player corpses in Battlegrounds (in the same way that you'd remove insignias) in order to do this.
- Darkmoon Despoiler Turning in each of the nine Darkmoon artifacts will reward this.
- Darkmoon Dominator The Darkmoon arena is pretty similar to the Stranglethorn arena, except you can count on its being a lot more popular for the forseeable future. You will probably need some friends to help you do this. It involves looting the Pit Fighter trinket 12 times from the chest that spawns every three hours in the arena.
- Darkmoon Duelist However, this achievement only requires you to do the above once.
- Darkmoon Dungeoneer This is the same as Darkmoon Defender, but it involves the five Darkmoon artifacts available from 5-man and heroic dungeons.
- Faire Favors Assuming that you have two primary professions and all four secondary professions (fishing, cooking, archaeology, and first aid), you should be able to get this done fairly easily.
- Fairegoer's Feast You'll only need to visit two vendors on the island, Stamp Thunderhorn and Sylannia, in order to do this. Please note that some of the drinks and food involved require level 85, so lower-level players cannot get this.
- I Was Promised a Pony Very easy. The ponies are located on the southeastern end of the Faire.
- Quick Shot Turning your character in the direction of the target needed is all that's required. Apart from actually shooting, that is.
- Step Right Up You should get this over the course of doing the daily quests on offer from the carnies.
- Taking the Show on the Road (Alliance)/Taking the Show on the Road (Horde) The Darkmoon Fireworks in question are sold by Boomie Sparks at the Faire. Blizzard recently changed the fireworks to have a seven-day duration and require the Faire to be on, so you will have to do this otherwise simple achievement while the Faire is active.
There's one pet that doesn't have to be bought here but rather fished.
- Darkmoon Balloon
- Darkmoon Cub
- Darkmoon Monkey
- Darkmoon Tonk
- Darkmoon Turtle
- Darkmoon Zeppelin
- From fishing in the waters around the island: Sea Pony. This is currently estimated at a one-in-1,000 drop rate.
- Darkmoon Dancing Bear
- Swift Forest Strider
There are new daily and weekly quests on offer at the Faire. The new profession-related quests (available weekly) are as follows:
- Alchemy A Fizzy Fusion
- Archaeology Fun for the Little Ones
- Blacksmithing Baby Needs Two Pair of Shoes
- Cooking Putting the Crunch in the Frog
- Enchanting Putting Trash to Good Use
- Engineering Talkin' Tonks
- Inscription Writing the Future
- First aid Putting the Carnies Back Together Again
- Fishing Spoilin' for Salty Sea Dogs
- Herbalism Herbs for Healing
- Jewelcrafting Keeping the Faire Sparkling
- Leatherworking Eyes on the Prizes
- Mining Rearm, Reuse, Recycle
- Skinning Tan My Hide
- Tailoring Banners, Banners Everywhere!
- Test Your Strength The Grisly Trophy is a (somewhat random) drop off any mob that rewards experience or honor. It does not need to be looted and will simply appear in your packs automatically. You'll find some useful discussion on how best to farm them in Monday's Queue, although you should be able to amass 250 fairly easily if you run 5-mans with some regularity. It definitely won't be as quick as going off to farm them on your own, but you don't need to go out of your way to farm them if you don't want or need them all at once.
These have now become Tattered Darkmoon Faire Prize Tickets and are functionally worthless. Sorry, folks: There doesn't appear to be a way to exchange them. You may want to hang onto them for nostalgia's sake or in the event that Blizzard decides that participation in the older Darkmoon Faire is worth being a feat of strength.

Just zoom in and point yourself toward a target. Your bullets will automatically fire toward the one you're more-or-less aiming at.
Caz Dec 7th 2011 3:09PM
I just strafed back and forth, moving to each target as it lit up and firing. Easy-peasy!
Al Dec 7th 2011 3:10PM
Turn your character to aim at the marked target.

I got that sea pony on my second cast doing the fishing quest. But 4 years on headless horseman and still no mount on any toon.
ravyncat Dec 7th 2011 3:02PM
Maybe you get better odds on the sea pony with a higher fishing skill?
My main, who has fishing maxed, was using the fishing hat, the tuskar pole, fishing line and a +75 lure so her skill was somewhere above 600. She got it 2nd cast.
An alt got it after about 6 minutes of fishing. Her skill is about 450-ish. She was using the lures etc. to increase her fishing to around 550.
None of my alts with lower fishing have manged to get one yet.

This is the kind of luck I have. If I'm actively trying for something, I can't get it. HH mount, Brew mounts, the original ZG mounts, Mr. Pinchy, the Frigid Frostling from Midsummer, etc. I've killed Garr in MC 32 consecutive weeks and no Bindings.
But if I'm not trying, I get lucky. I had just started playing the game, and was just barely high enough to fight Ahune during midsummer. He dropped the Scorchling (it was the last year he dropped it.) My friend had been been trying for that for years. I didn't even know what it was. But she was kinda drunk and let me have it. The next day she asked, "I didn't let you have the Scorchling, did I?" I said, "Yeah. Why, is it rare or something?" Her response was, "I hate you." Or when I randomly helped a guy complete his druid epic flying quest back when you had to have a druid to summon Anzu. I'd never been in Sethek Halls before, but we two manned our way through it and the Raven Lord dropped. First time in there and I got it.
So I guess I have to zen my way to teh rare lootz.
Akueria Dec 8th 2011 2:28AM
Managed to get it on my fifth cast on my main toon. I was so happy!

RNG hates me when I'm trying for achievements.
Back when my DK was my main and I ran heroics and holiday events on him because I HAD to grind out the badges (this was back in Wrath, before JPs were implemented) I won the roll on Bronze Drake, Blue Drake, and Blue Proto-Drake all the first time I saw them. I got the Sewer Rat while trying to level fishing so I could fish up fish for feasts.
Then I switched mains, and only use my DK as an achievement toon. I ran HH every day this year and last. I've run Strat I can't tell you how many times. I've punched that stupid Kara horse in the face more times than I can remember. I've fished in soooooooo many pools of fish looking for the turtle mount. Never ever see them now that I'm actively TRYING to get the pet/mount achievements.
I ran my Priest through HH this year just to run him through it. First day of HH I got the mount on my Priest, and I don't even care about my priest! I just have him and keep him at max level because he was the first toon I ever seriously played!
My mage was farming cloth in old world dungeons to power-level tailoring. All I wanted was the cloth. I was running Blackrock Spire (both Upper and Lower) for Runecloth, and I got the Worg Pup AND Spider hatchling pets from BRS in the same run, and the only pets/mounts my mage has are the stuff that is account-bound (and the Wooly Mammoth cuz I was JP and Honor Capped and I needed a dump for my JP so I wasn't wasting them :-P).
So yeah, long story short, if I'm actively trying to get stuff, I can never ever get it. But when I don't give two sh*ts about the stuff and I'm just doing my own thing, the stuff ALWAYS drops for me, and if it's an item that is rolled for... I always win the roll.

Once I did the math, I realized it would be 8-ish months before casually playing the darkmoon fair would allow me to look like a mediocre WoW player from early 2005...
Tier 0 dungeon gear would have been a fun transmog for casual players - especially since that's what a casual player DID look like through Vanilla. Too bad.
tgrhwke Dec 7th 2011 3:10PM
for larger races that are having trouble with the bullseye achievement. use a vanity item that changes you to a smaller race such as the Iron Boot Flask.
Ilmyrn Dec 7th 2011 3:17PM
For larger races that would like to be considerate to other players, I'll second this suggestion. (I'm looking at you, pack of Tauren standing on the counter so that no one can see.)
Noyou Dec 7th 2011 3:34PM
Yeah. Remind me to bring some baby spice for the yahoo's that love to park their mounts on the counter and "read the quest text". A-holes.
Astoreth Dec 7th 2011 4:56PM
Wait, larger races? I was certain I'd hit dead center with my belf chick several times, and still no achievement!
Al Dec 7th 2011 3:12PM
I haven't hung around the grounds long enough yet, anyone know if the Chieftains launch rant at the Alliance audience? Wondering how authentic their in-game shows are.
Noyou Dec 7th 2011 3:46PM
I am wondering why they were not pulled from the game in light of their antics at the last blizzcon.
clundgren Dec 7th 2011 3:31PM
Unless you want to farm dungeons, the effective ticket cap is much, much lower. I do raid and run regular heroics, and have yet to see anything drop. I also do lots of pvp, and ditto. Farming old content to get Faire tickets is about as inspired a mechanic as archaeology was.
I understand that rng is rng, but for me, the practical ticket cap is around 70 or so. On top of that, the games are...well, they're lame. Kind of fun the first few times, but they involve absolutely no skill or challenge.
Although I do want the mounts and pets, I'm not sure I'm going to bother with the Faire. 10 minutes per day worth of Argent Tournament dailies easily nets me about 5k gold/week (the BoE pets are roughly 3k each on the AH); I can just use that money to buy anything I need from the Faire.
Overall, I think 4.3 is a great patch...but the Darkmoon Faire was, for me, a major disappointment.
Necromann Dec 7th 2011 3:44PM
The others got old, but I love whack a gnoll.
Luotian Dec 7th 2011 8:38PM
See, and I love the games because I *can* do them. I am less than useless at jousting, despite my desire to have the 'Of Ogrimmar' title. I can, however, take three minutes and toss rings on the back of a turtle no problem :).
Ura Dec 7th 2011 3:43PM
Sea Pony took me six hours to fish up... so it's definitely not roses for everyone.
beth Dec 9th 2011 2:10AM
Sea pony took me around 4 and a half hours with fishing skill maxed etc. I tried fishing in open water for a few hours but in the end got it from the debris pools. I not sure which has the better drop rate but the debris pools are definitely more profitable if you can fish at a quiet time on your server.
